#PER CHI AMA: Death Metal

‘Ageless Venomous’ is a milestone. This is second to ‘Conquerors…’, a previous release that was impeccable. This one is right there too. Amazing death metal from Brazilian natives. They’ve had a great career and are still making good music. Definitely one of their best. The songs are so catchy. Moyses shows that he could still shred. This release was from 22 years ago... still is a classic. I’m surprised it took me so long to review this. I’m glad that I am now. This is death metal supreme. This one has bonus tracks that I have. Good the whole way through impeccable as I say. These guys have been around for over 30 years. I still don’t think they get the recognition they deserve and touring with top bands in the genre.

The sound quality on here was good. Top notch. How long is the recording though is the question really! The songs are really well composed. They have some great riffs on here. On all the tracks though, not just some. I really enjoy this album immensely! It’s one that I can jam over and over. It doesn’t get old. They put together some spotless riffs and Alex is great on vocals. The drums are good too. There’s more variety on this one than ‘Conquerors'. It’s not just blast beating. A lot of double bass. Sounds kick ass.

These guys are brilliant songwriters. Their new one is really good too. They are kind of like veterans now, but they’re still going strong. I didn’t really get into the early material just ‘Conquerors’ onward. I’ve had a great career so far I just wish they had a bigger fan base. I will always support this band.

These guys have some more albums to put out. And they just had a most recent one released this year. You can download this one on Spotify or listent to on YouTube but I bought the CD. Jzovce – Inverses

#PER CHI AMA: Depressive Black

Thomas Bel è mente e compositore unico dei francesi Jzovce, non proprio il nome più semplice da pronunciare o memorizzare. Comunque, il buon Thomas quest’anno ha già rilasciato tre EP, tra cui questo ‘Inverses’, un vinile in 7” in tiratura limitata di 50 copie, e dovrebbe essere portavoce di un depressive black aspro e incazzato. Due i pezzi inclusi qui, “A Grands Feux” e “Contre Les Os”. Il primo ci conduce immediatamente attraverso un’atmosfera malsana, fatta di sfuriate post-black, rallentamenti orrorifici, ritmiche serrate e delle grim vocals che completano il quadro di quello che a mio avviso sarebbe piuttosto un lavoro prettamente black e che, l’aura depressive la palesa attraverso solo una parte arpeggiata negli ultimi 30 secondi del brano. La seconda traccia mostra delle ritmiche più oblique, e dei suoni davvero ostici da digerire, cosa solitamente estranea ad un genere come il depressive black, cosi spesso ammantato da sontuose melodie malinconiche. Qui invece spazio quasi esclusivamente alla furia dirompente del black e poco altro (un altro arpeggio a fine brano), che mi rendono più propenso ad andarmi ad ascoltare i vecchi lavori degli Shining. Hex A.D. - Delightful Sharp Edges

#PER CHI AMA: Heavy Prog Rock

Se la Norvegia negli anni '90 rappresentava il luogo là dove il black metal è nato, oggi lo stesso splendido paese scandinavo è diventato sinonimo di sonorità progressive. L'ho già detto più di una volta, lo ribadisco oggi in occasione dell'uscita del sesto album degli Hex A.D., 'Delightful Sharp Edges', un disco peraltro focalizzato su un tema davvero straziante, il genocidio, dall'Olocausto degli ebrei nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale, al massacro dei Tutsi in Rwanda, per finire con la persecuzione e genocidio dei Rohingya in Birmania. Un tema molto pesante che viene affrontato attraverso questo concept album suddiviso in tre parti narrative, che conducono l'ascoltatore in un viaggio della memoria davvero complicato da digerire liricamente parlando. Il disco si apre con la lunghissima (quasi 13 minuti) "The Memory Division" ed una proposta che si muove tra il prog e l'heavy rock, chiamando in causa mostri sacri della storia, da Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy e Black Sabbath, combinando un innumerevole numero di influenze, generi e stili, da un utilizzo massivo di synth e tastiere, dotate di una spinta psichedelica ad un approccio hard rock oriented. Il brano è sicuramente complesso e forse necessita di molteplici ascolti per essere assimilato e capito appieno. Molto più semplice invece l'ascolto di un brano classico come potrebbe essere "Murder in Slow Motion", che non inventando nulla di che, ci investe con il suo hard rock graffiante in pieno stile settantiano. "...By a Thread", nel suo lungo e patinato acustico d'apertura con tanto di voci effettate, rievoca poi gli ultimi Opeth. Con l'ingresso di batteria e percussioni, queste danno una bella sterzata al sound, che evolve poi nei suoni spiazzanti di quel treno che deportava gli ebrei nei campi di concentramento. Cosi inizia "Når Herren Tar Deg I Nakken", un brano dalle atmosfere sinistre, inquietanti, sorrette da una voce che sembra dare delle istruzioni ai nuovi ospiti di quel campo di concentramento, mentre la musica si muove tra riff pesanti e suoni di hammond. "Radio Terror" attacca con un flebile sound, una chitarra che sembra più un grido di dolore, mentre la voce del frontman si presenta qui più delicata rispetto ad altre parti. E poi ecco entrare in scena delle percussioni tribali a stravolgere un po' tutto con un incedere che potrebbe stare a metà strada tra Pink Floyd e Blue Öyster Cult, in quello che reputo essere il miglior pezzo del disco. Non siamo nemmeno a metà disco (la brevissima "St Francis" è giusto a metà) ma rischierei di dilungarmi esageratamente nel raccontarvi questo 'Delightful Sharp Edges'. Mi limiterò pertanto a suggerirvi un altro paio di pezzi, anche se devo ammettere che la seconda metà del disco non sembra essere altrettanto convincente quanto la prima, in quanto suona più deboluccia, complice la presenza di un paio di brevi tracce, per cosi dire, accessorie. A salvarne l'esito c'è però la splendida "The Burmese Python", in grado di emanare un feeling di grande impatto, evocando una sorta di improbabile mix tra Pink Floyd e Green Carnation. Un buon lavoro, non c'è che dire, ma che necessita di una certa attenzione e sensibilità per essere realmente apprezzato al 100%. (Francesco Scarci)

Nyctophobic - Insects

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

#PER CHI AMA: Grindcore

Dopo gli Hypnos, mi trovo a recensire un’altra band della Morbid Records, ma stavolta non posso dare un giudizio altrettanto positivo a questi Nyctophobic. Ci troviamo di fronte infatti ad un banalissimo grindcore a cui si aggiunge una sentita mancanza di idee e di tecnica. Non solo le parti strumentali non le ritengo sufficientemente all’altezza della situazione, ma anche la voce non è delle migliori del genere, anzi forse troppo volutamente ricercata e fuori dall’ambito propriamente grind e metal. Sul mercato sicuramente esistono band peggiori di questa, quindi il lavoro non è completamente da buttare, però le uscite per questo genere musicale, da sempre, sono tante e solamente con un ascolto attento si possono valutare i giusti acquisti.

Howlin' Sun - Maxime

#PER CHI AMA: Rock/Blues

Qual è il male di crescere sotto le ali protettrici di un sound che ha fatto storia e indiscutibilmente è da considerare alla stregua di un credo religioso? Ecco, la band di Bergen, al secondo full length, si adagia su questa formula eterna di musica rock, per esternare le proprie idee musicali. Quel sound che rese formidabile 'Sticky Fingers' dei Rolling Stones, mischiato ad un suono frizzante e moderno di casa Jet, Rival Sons o The Black Crows, facendo proprie poi certe intuizioni della band con la linguaccia più famosa del rock di tutti i tempi. Quindi, taglienti chitarre di stampo rock blues, una sezione ritmica corposa, ed una bella e calda voce, sempre degnamente protagonista, ci portano in vetta ad un ottimo vintage sound anni '70, pieno di pathos e calore, illuminato e tutto da gustare. L'intero disco non fa una piega, e ti prende alla gola fin dal primo accordo di chitarra. Il tutto è esplosivo e poco importa se tante cose sono già state fatte e ti sembra di sapere già dove andranno a finire. "Jayne" ad esempio, con il suo caldo arrangiamento tropicale e un organetto senza tempo, sembra un brano dimenticato del repertorio del Jagger solista, mentre l'uso di cori e doppie voci rasentano la perfezione sebbene siano sulla falsariga degli Stones. Il disco è un bel disco, un ottimo disco. Anche i fiati di "Be Mine" non scherzano con i ricordi ed esercitano una forza disturbante temibile, che solo il rock di quell'epoca può veramente far emergere. Assai apprezzabile la cadenza lenta della ballata elettrica e ipnotica "Lost", anche se il vero rock blues, ritmato e cadenzato alla virgola, è proprietà di "All Night Long", che sembra tratta da un disco degli ZZ Top, con quel suono secco e diretto, con sferragliate di chitarra e una voce splendidamente sensuale, esageratamente Jagger. Sarò ripetitivo, ma a volte essere seguaci di quei pochi, ma giusti canoni, concede molte soddisfazioni, d'altra parte non tutti devono essere avangardia. La forma poi di questo modo di intendere il rock è tutt'altro che scontata e facile da rivisitare e rinvigorire. I norvegesi Howlin' Sun hanno messo da parte ambienti freddi e divinità nordiche, per nascere in piena luce, sotto il calore del retro rock più puro ed efficace. Un album piacevolissimo come il suo predecessore del resto, di ben cinque anni prima. Oggi più che mai alfieri di un ottimo rock classico, diretto, fantasioso e pieno di vitalità, autori di un disco che vi entusiasmerà già al primo ascolto. Non lasciatevi ingannare dalle possibili somiglianze o da derive soniche, andate oltre e gustatevi questo bel lavoro senza farvi traviare da un presunto plagio. I nipotini norvegesi degli Stones hanno colpito duro ancora una volta! Un album da ascoltare ad alto volume. (Bob Stoner)

#PER CHI AMA: Death Old School

A strong Death influence circa 'Spiritual Healing' among others definitely are there too. These guys are Chicago natives with kick ass death metal! I believe this one should be at least a 72 rating because of the great follow-up that it is opposed to their debut. A 5-piece band showing what they can do musically and the vocals are atypical. There's sort-of an echo to them what makes the band unique on that front. The guitars are pretty killer riff-wise. They have quite brutal riffs with a lot of tremolo picking and unique frenzies. I think that the band has potential for a long sustainability. They not only have to compete with the Chicago scene (Cardiac Arrest, Cianide, Usurper, et al) but the world.

They need more of a fan base and they're not getting much press. A friend turned me onto them. This is definitely a strong follow-up musically and instrumentality. I did myself a favor and bought the CD. I ignored the low rating and liked it a lot!

Aside from the Death influence I felt that they had riffs that were in their own unique sort of vibe. The vocals have reverb on them and the music compliments the voice. Definitely came out a winner here. No downplaying here this was worth it!

The guitars are what did it for me. They had a strong sound with riffs that kicked ass and drums backing them up which were crushing. The production/mixing quality was top notch. There was nothing left out and the sound really killed it in terms of precision. Bear Mace was a step up the latter in death metal with this album which will have fans that hear this one in awe. They need to spread throughout the world because their music is really unique. Aside from their influences, they show much more maturity and variety. I feel like they showed a great progression from their debut. The music and vocals hit the spot for me! (Death8699)

The Sun or the Moon - Andromeda

#PER CHI AMA: Psych/Kraut Rock

Era l'agosto del 2021 quando recensivo 'Cosmic' dei tedeschi The Sun or the Moon. A distanza di due estati, eccomi con il comeback discografico dei nostri in mano, 'Andromeda'. I nostri ci ripropongono, ancora attraverso un tema di tipo cosmico, il loro ispiratissimo connubio tra kraut rock e psichedelia, spingendoci indietro nel tempo di quasi 50 anni. Si perchè anche questo lavoro, come il precedente, affonda le proprie radici musicali, in band baluardo di quelle sonorità, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Ozric Tentacles e Hakwind, giusto per fare qualche nome qua e là a casaccio. E "Operation Mindfuck", che sembra fare il verso a 'Operation Mindcrime' dei Queensryche, in realtà si muove su fluttuanti sonorità oniriche, con tanto di sensuali percussioni che ne guidano l'ascolto interstellare, verso galassie lontane, e la voce del frontman a deliziarsi con vocalizzi puliti e delicati. Con "Psychedelik Kosmonaut", le cose cambiano drasticamente (ma sarà la sola traccia del disco a scostarsi cosi violentemente dalle altre) con una proposta più incalzante, come se i Rammstein suonassero cose dei Kraftwerk in versione più danzereccia, e con le voci in lingua madre, a sancire il senso di appartenenza a questo genere. "Planet 9" nuovamente imbocca la strada dell'opening track, tra lisergiche atmosfere rilassate, pulsioni cosmiche, suggestioni prog e aperture jazzy, con flauto e pianoforte veri punti di forza di un brano che sembra frutto di pura improvvisazione. Anche "Andromedan Speed Freaks" prosegue su binari affini, anche se a metà brano irrompe un robustissimo riff di chitarra, per poi successivamente rientrare nei ranghi di un sound cosmico, composto ed illuminato, pronto ad accompagnarci nelle esotiche contaminazioni di "The Art of Microdosing". Una song quest'ultima, che riassume nella sua interezza la proposta dei teutonici, che vede chiamare in causa anche i Cosmic Letdown in quelle parti più orientaleggianti, e che peraltro, nelle sue fosche melodie, concede il palesarsi di una ugola femminile e di un ispiratissimo sax, vera ciliegina sulla torta di questo inebriante pezzo. Si prosegue sui tocchi di piano di "Into Smithereens" ed una voce che, inequivocabilmente, chiama in causa i Pink Floyd, per un brano dotato peraltro di un'animosità splenica davvero emozionante. "Surfin' Around Saturn" (splendido questo titolo per cui è stato anche girato un video) ci fa fluttuare nel vuoto spaziale tra sonorità di doorsiana memoria e una forte vena pinkfloydiana che rappresenta probabilmente la principale influenza per i nostri. Analogamente, per la chiusura affidata all'ancor più eterea "40 Days", un pezzo che, seppur strumentale, rappresenta con il suo lungo assolo prog, il vero pamphlet dei The Sun or the Moon. Siete pronti anche voi quindi per un nuovo viaggio interalattico? (Francesco Scarci)

#FOR FANS OF: Swedish Death, Dismember

It's clear, immaculate Swedish death metal frenzy in under 13 minutes. Way expectational for a band Rome based. They don't seem to let up this whole time! That somewhat burly voice from Max supporting the music that's ultra HEAVY. Good production, too. But I'm looking more towards the music which on the most stands out for me. The recording did them well for their prominent music. I embraced this sound and was able to agree with my initial reaction to the sound of the music. These guys say that they're "no one", but not hardly that. They are totally a band that's so worth checking out.

These guys are among the likes of Dismember, older Entombed, Fleshcrawl, et al. What I'm hearing is the potential for this band to succeed in the 21st century music scene. All three of the songs carry with them the old school sound and Max their vocalist is interesting to with his tone.

I'm not going to scramble to the lyrical content, just the music, mixing and utmost potential. Since they've brought this to me a few weeks ago, I've been hooked. Aside from what I've currently said, the band has a backbone of bronze. Don't mistake them in reading this that just because they're from Rome that they're not going to deliver. The guitar I loved the most. A lot of tremolo picking just ad nauseum. Not much lead guitar, but that's alright I dig rhythm only work just as much. Especially if the lead guitars are sloppy. So what to really expect? The Swedish influence in death metal, burly vocals, slow/to moderate tempos in playing, good production quality, and just a really good listen to overall! Enjoy!
