Orne - The Conjuration by the Fire

Chiudete gli occhi e lasciatevi trasportare indietro nel tempo, dalle note di 'The Conjuration by the Fire', prima fatica dei finlandesi Orne, fuori per la nostrana Black Widow Records. La band finnica ai più sarà sconosciuta, sebbene esista da ben vent'anni e tra le sue fila militi Kimi Karki, meglio conosciuto come Peter Vikar, chitarrista dei defunti Reverend Bizarre. Lasciatosi alle spalle il capitolo doom con questi ultimi, il buon Peter si è lanciato nella finalizzazione del materiale, rimasto in fase embrionale per ben due lustri, con questo act, concependo un concentrato di musica rock progressive, che richiama mostri sacri del genere, quali Van der Graaf Generator, Black Widow, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel (era Genesis) e Pink Floyd. Certo, la classe profusa in questo debut, non è decisamente all’altezza dei geniali eroi degli anni ’70, tuttavia diversi spunti davvero gradevoli sono racchiusi nei sette pezzi del cd. Partendo con la recitata e sinistra intro “In the Vault”, la release si snoda attraverso intriganti pezzi dal forte flavour dark psichedelico progressivo, fatto di cupe ed arcane ambientazioni e di tematiche inerenti l’occultismo la religione, la storia e racconti dell’orrore (H.P. Lovecraft docet). Ascoltando le note di 'The Conjuration by the Fire', sembra di essere catapultati in un horror movie di Lamberto Bava, grazie alle sue atmosfere angoscianti dipinte dalle magistrali chitarre di Kimi e Pekka e dall’impeccabile utilizzo di strumenti non proprio convenzionali, come saxofono e flauto, che non possono non richiamare nella nostra memoria i Jethro Tull e la loro brillante vena improvvisativa. La calda voce di Albert (che però alla lunga risulta un po’ stancante e forse il vero punto debole della band), lo strumentismo ricercato dai nostri, i delicatissimi ricami offerti dal pianista e soprattutto dal sax di Jussi, rendono questa release abbastanza interessante per gli amanti di un genere, anche se non di così facile ascolto. Dolore, ossessione, malinconia e inquietudine completano un album raffinato, che sarà in grado di emozionarvi e stupirvi, con le sue dolci e oscure melodie, retaggio di un passato non ancora andato perduto... Last Legacy - In Human Condition

#PER CHI AMA: Thrash Metal
Chissà se in giro si trovano ancora patiti della musica thrash, che possano dare un po' di gioia a chi, come me, è cresciuto ascoltando Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Over Kill ed Exodus. Sono passati oltre una trentina d'anni da allora e in giro si trovano sempre meno spesso nuove leve in grado di rifare il verso ai maestri d'oltreoceano e raramente band capaci di sfornare musica, degna di catapultare un gruppo di giovani, nell'olimpo del metal internazionale (cose che accadevano solo negli anni '80). I veronesi Last Legacy, nati nel 2005 per volere di Enrico (ex-vocalist non più presente in line-up) e Marco, ci hanno provato a rinverdire i fasti del genere, nonostante una proposta ancora acerba, ma comunque con le idee già abbastanza chiare: riprendere il vecchio sound della Bay Area e svecchiarlo, modernizzandolo con sonorità più attuali. Compito assai proibitivo, mi viene da pensare, tuttavia il quintetto veneto, autore già di un demo, uscito nel 2006, rilasciano nell'autunno del 2007 questo professionale lavoro di quattro pezzi (più intro) caratterizzato da sonorità thrash old school, rilette appunto in chiave moderna. Il risultato non ha del miracoloso, però 'In Human Condition', pur preservando un appeal molto retrò, riesce a conquistarmi dopo svariati ascolti. Le tracce aggrediscono l'ascoltatore da subito con “For Hate Sake”, grazie al suo riffing serrato e ai suoi melodici assoli; la voce di Simone è cattiva, ma mai sopra le linee (in “Reborn” ricorda anche il buon James Hetfield), la ritmica è bella tosta (eccellente la prova di Jacopo dietro le pelli), cosi come onesta è la prova dei due axemen (notevole nella già citata “Reborn”, la migliore traccia dell'EP). Niente di originale, è bene sottolinearlo, ma la genuinità del combo della Valpolicella è da premiare. Musica diretta e incazzata, ideale per serate di pogo sfrenato in compagnia degli amici! Peccato solo che dal 2007 ad oggi, i nostri si siano persi per strada. (Francesco Scarci)

Cardiac Arrest - ...In Rotten Retrospect

A great compilation at that, which this is. Some great songs on here featuring the 4 piece on here. The music is death "rot" metal as they call it. Guitars are brutal featuring them in B-flat tuning. And the bass has a sick overdrive pedal which makes it sound even more metal. This band I've liked ever since they formed and this compilation is a conglomeration of tracks on albums of the past. Jim being a pretty strong drummer or as they called him "Grindhead." Adam been the backbone front man of the band that has only gone through a few lineup changes in their whole history starting in 1997.

This compilation clocks in a little less than 40 but it is 40 of pure ear butchery. Adam's vocals are way guttural and the guitars are way thick! That goes to show you how heavy these songs melt your eardrums. Bits and pieces from albums throughout their musical career they do these songs justice not to mention their cranking devastation. I enjoyed all of this everyone seems to contribute to the recording rather well. Multiple vocalists (David and Tom) as well as main vocals by Adam. It's dealing with their flexibility in that department. The guitars are just smashing in intensity. I believe the vocals, guitars, and drums are equally kicking ass!

The sound quality is better every recording on here it's just dynamite. The mixing did good as well they had a great line-up here I wish that it stayed with the same line-up but it is what it is. They are super awesome live as well! Anyway, some of my favorite tracks are on here ("Carnage Your Fate", etc.). Some of the guitar guitarwork on here throughout they did these songs justice. I couldn't ask for a better compilation for $12. Definitely worth it! You won't be able to download this one streamers! You have to buy the CD, to my knowledge anyway. It's worth it though, ABSOLUTELY! This one is a keeper through the whole thing!

In retrospect, everything was done with precision impeccable onslaught. This is death metal that is in no way relenting, it's totally unrelenting! These guys put it altogether and ousted their competition. With the death "rot" metal and great track listing for a sizeable seizing of guitar/vocals in your face! Everything on here is a highlight and nothing is less than extraordinary. These guys know how to put together some great death metal and play all so well. I still wish Jim was in the band but it is what it is This compilation CD is everything people should hope for it to be. It's totally awesome! Get the CD now! (Death8699)

King of Asgard - Svartrviðr

The Swedish band King of Asgard has had a quite solid career since it was founded thirteen years ago in Mjölby. With four albums so far and a quite stable line-up, the band only suffered two changes in more than a decade, which is not as common as one could think and you know, the metal scene is full of changes in the band’s line-up due to several circumstances. As they play a mixture of Viking and death metal, the comparisons with quite famous bands like the very successful Amon Amarth or classic outfits like Thyrfing or Einherjer is quite usual. I would ignore the AA comparisons as this band is closer to the later projects. Still, the King of Asgard has forged its own sound and should be judged without losing too much highlighting the similarities.

Going back to the most important thing, it is time to take a listen to the band’s new effort entitled 'Svartrviðr' which is obviously firmly rooted in the always present Viking influences. Unlike other bands playing this genre, King of Asgard sounds much closer to the sombre tone than pagan black metal bands have. Even though the band’s compositions have certain epic moments, the songs sound darker to me and less like a victorious march to a battle as some Viking metal bands sound. The album opener "Frôðr" is a fine example of it with these austere riffs, that sound powerful and as heavy as could expect from a death metal band. The tone is darker transporting us to a desolate scenario, more similar to bleak grassland full of corpses after a bloody battle. "Rifna" follows a similar pattern with a more atmospheric touch thanks to the tastefully placed arrangements. Apart form the obvious already mentioned influences, King of Asgard sounds as a pure death metal band, with remarkably heavy riffs, which create a true wall of sound reinforced by a quite solid work in the rhythmic base. The drums sound dense with a generous use of the double-bass, mainly in the long mid-tempo sections where the band seems to be very comfortable. This doesn´t mean that the pace is always the same as the band knows to introduce certain faster sections to make the song more varied. I especially like how "Hæimr" ends with a combination of the aforementioned mid-tempo sections and a blasting part, which is accompanied by a background clean choir. This addition gives to the song, one of the previously mentioned slightly epic touches. The bleak tone is present in the rest of the songs, where the contrast between the slowest and fastest parts is remarked in certain songs like "Kvikr" for example, although the riffing and the pace is predominantly not very fast as the songs are composed to sound dense and heavy. One of the best points is that almost every song has an arrangement here and there, nothing very common or abundantly used, but something that enriches the songs in the form of clean vocals, a simple but effective piano or an acoustic guitar, like it happens in the instrumental track "Harmdauðr", among others.

'Svartrviðr' is definitively a quite solid album by the Swedish King of Asgard. I can´t find anything incredibly outstanding to rate this album as masterpiece or album of the year, but it certainly has not weaknesses. If you like this genre but with a darker touch, this album should appeal to you. (Alain González Artola)

Hatemonger - The Vile Maxim

#FOR FANS OF: Death, Dismember
Chicago based death metal band in the vein of Fleshcrawl, Entrails, Dismember, et al. They have a Swedish guitar sound to them I'm not familiar with their equipment if they use a pedal for the tone or what. In any case, the sound is superb, especially with a band that's still getting established. Their 5 track EP is some hearty death metal with riffs that are pretty fast and intense! I got to see them at a show this past July and concluded that they were one of the better bands on that roster. The musicians here have some history in the metal world mainly Alletta their bass player. Everyone came together with intents of making some sick music!

I think what did it for me were the guitars and the recording quality. Though it seems that everyone did a good job at contributing to a great start with this EP. It is intense it the core and despite the Swedish sound, the riffs are pretty original. The leads were a little iffy but overall the musicianship was impeccable. I wouldn't give this type of rating where I thought that it would be unworthy of merit. I look forward to full-length albums in the future from them. They are great live and on this recording. I think that they have it in them to continue on this path of abominating guitar/musicianship.

The production quality I thought was great and I took it upon myself to buy a physical copy of the album for myself and to support the band. They are more than quality musicians the death metal arena! I enjoyed all 22+ minutes in this 5 song EP. Not only is it quality, but I like the fact that the guitarwork is wholly original. It's that twist of Swedish tone that did it for me as well. Not sure what pedal is used for that, but in any event it took ahold of me and won me over. It's anything but sloppy guitar-work. Totally professional and original, this whole EP shows what good quality has become of Chicago based acts. They are absolutely amazing.

Get in gear and don't just listen to their digital download of this, but buy the EP to support the band and extreme music! These guys hopefully have a long career in the death metal realm showing absolute maturity and professionalism. Upon seeing them perform live made me curious about what they'd be like on a recording. This is no amateur session here, these are real and amazing musicians that put together some songs with impeccable maturity. Not only is Hatemonger arising early on in the death metal arena, but all the members were apart of previous bands. They've joined and shown what expectations they live up to in the death metal arena! Check them out! (Death8699)

The Sun or the Moon - Cosmic

#PER CHI AMA: Psych Rock
Un altro debut album proveniente dalla sempre più brulicante scena tedesca, questa volta con i The Sun or the Moon, da non confondere con gli omonimi punkers inglesi. ‘Cosmic’ è un concentrato di psichedelia, progressive e kraut-rock, da leccarsi i baffi. Sette lunghi pezzi che rinfrancheranno gli amanti di sonorità lisergiche alla Pink Floyd o della synthwave alla Kraftwerk. L’opener, nonchè title track, in tal senso potrebbe essere la giusta sintesi delle due storiche band appena citate, coniugando l’elettronica con lo psych prog, il tutto sublimato da quel cantato di scuola teutonica, un po’ robotico, un po’ cibernetico. Erotiche percussioni di bossanova aprono “Twisted Kamasutra”, manco fosse la musica introduttiva di un qualche film porno degli anni ’70. Il ritmo è cosi rilassato, con forti rimandi a sonorità settantiane, vuoi anche per una voce, questa volta più calda e suadente, che prende le distanze da quella proposta in apertura. La musica poi fa poi tutto il resto muovendosi su ritmi decisamente compassati, e nel finale votati a sperimentalismi space rock. Un loop elettronico apre “Eldorado” (song le cui liriche prendono in prestito un testo di Edgar A. Poe), prima che la ritmica assuma toni ben più grevi e strizzino l’occhiolino ai Pink Floyd (soprattutto a livello vocale) lanciandosi in lunghi trip strumentali affidati alle sempre più dilatate e profonde melodie che caratterizzano questo pezzo e in generale questo esordio. Sperimentare è il mantra che contraddistingue i The Sun or the Moon e io non posso che esserne felice. Da questi suoni cosi ricercati può solo uscire tanta roba buona in grado di concretizzarsi nelle melodie orientaleggianti di “Julia Dream”, cover e tributo ai Pink Floyd da parte dei nostri, suonata cosi fedele all’originale da farla quasi sembrare loro. Ecco, l’originale del 1968 durava poco più di due minuti e mezzo, quella della band germanica otto, in quanto ripropongono il tema principale in loop aggiungendo in coda un bell’abrasivo bridge di chitarra. Suoni da videogioco anni ’80 per l’intro di “Trippin’ on Mars”, un pezzo fresco ed arrembante nel suo ipnotico incedere elettronico, tra chitarra, piano e synths. Il quartetto di Francoforte non finisce di stupire e con gli ultimi due pezzi, “Space Travel Agent” e “Quicksand”, trova modo di imbastire altri trenta minuti di musica avanguardistica assai accattivante, muovendosi in bilico tra eteree tastiere kraut-rock, ambient, dub, voci di pink floydiana memoria e chitarre sempre ispiratissime, in grado di catapultarci in uno stato di tranquillità surreale, tra visioni estatiche e viaggi interstellari in mondi lontani, che forse non esistono, se non nella nostra mente. Destruction - Live Attack

Better than live sounding Destruction with the last release featuring Mike Sifringer on main guitar. Mike left or was reported disconnected from Destruction this year. So I bought this release capturing him on the guitar department. It would've been nice had he stayed with the band since they'd become a 4-piece once again. But oh well. This release features a lot of the classics from early Destruction to 'Release From Agony' and 'Cracked Brain'. Most of the songs are from the 80's and early 90's there weren't many modern ones maybe 3-4. I guess since they may have felt that since touring has been a no-go since Covid-19 they'd play the classics.

I really enjoyed 'Live Without Sense' also, maybe even more than this live album. And I favor Harry over Damir though I have the utmost respect for both guitarists. These guys formed in '82 or '83 and remained together up until recently that two of the founding members they've had till Mike's departure. This album features some of the classic songs such as "Mad Butcher" and "Bestial Invasion" to name a couple. Like Schmier said they've covered a lot of history with this live show. To longtime fans they are of no surprise but yes, this album newer listeners get to hear the classics which they've only changed up a little bit on the guitars, but not much.

Schmier sounds pretty much the same as he always have though his voice is a little bit deeper than featuring past stuff. His work with Panzer (first two releases) has him sounding like this live release. And both new musicians Randy on drums and Damir on lead guitar perform solos showing their strength on each instrument. Olly (ex-Destruction) still favors the band and Harry (ex-Destruction) also is featured on many lead guitar appearances on their more current releases. Olly is in mainly a support but Harry was guest up until recently. Damir has filled that slot but I don't know who's taking Mike's place, I don't even think the band knows.

You can get this on the digital Spotify streaming release or buy the CD on 3 discs 2 Live Attack CD's and one Blue-ray all in one case. I bought the physical copy to support the band. And because I support bands that allow you to get their physical CD's. This one was too good to pass up. I think the production quality was good and the guitars/vocals were quality as well. This album is almost 2 hours total and as I mentioned a lot of history and a lot of classics. They really are strong on this. The energy is all there and Schmier leads the way on vocals giving a great live performance. I'm glad he re-joined the band back in 1999 and let's all say good-bye to Mike! Get this album! Feeling of Presence – Of Lost Illusion

#PER CHI AMA: Dark/Post Rock Strumentale
C’è un qualcosa di magico nelle note introduttive di ‘Of Lost Illusion’, album di debutto dei teutonici Feeling of Presence. La band bavarese, guidata dal polistrumentista Andreas Hack, accompagnato in questo suo viaggio dall’arpista Nerissa Schwarz e dal batterista Wolfgang Ostermann, propone un sognante sound strumentale che, dall’iniziale “A Weird Form of Darkness” ci accompagnerà per quasi 40 minuti fino alla conclusiva “Venus Transit”, con un dark/post rock emozionale, quasi da brividi. L’apertura è a dir poco splendida, l’assenza della voce è compensato da un fantastico lavoro di arrangiamenti e da quel taglio cinematico che impregna interamente questa incredibile canzone che da sola varrebbe il prezzo del biglietto. “Room Number 105” infatti, per quanto deliziosa, non ha lo stesso effetto, sebbene confermi le buone qualità del trio germanico, abile a districarsi in momenti evocativi, ma forse qui troppo ancorati al post rock, cosa che invece non avevo percepito nell’opener. Con la title track, l’immagine che si configura nella mia testa riprende quella della cover urbana del disco, ossia una sorta di passeggiata nella città deserta di notte. Splendidi gli archi, che rievocano le ottime sensazioni provate inizialmente, tra dark, ambient ed un malinconico shoegaze. Affascinanti, non c’è che dire. E il godimento prosegue anche con “Fluorescent Detail”, una song in cui l’elettronica sembra prendere il sopravvento, regalandoci un altro genere di emozioni, più sintetiche forse, ma altrettanto efficaci e piacevoli, con reminiscenze musicali che conducono nel finale a ‘Host’ dei Paradise Lost. “Hollow Innocence” è una traccia più canonica ma comunque eterea almeno fino a metà pezzo quando la melodia viene spezzata da una poderosa linea di chitarra che si sovrappone al candore delle keys. L’ultima, “Venus Transit”, è un viaggio che parte da un lugubre trip hop per poi caricarsi di suoni emozionali e carichi di suggestioni cinematografiche, in grado di sancire la splendida chiusura di un inatteso disco strumentale.
