Destruction - Thrash Anthems II

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash
This is a good second round of re-done tracks by the MONUMENTAL Destruction. It's pretty tight, sounding better than the originals (I think). Though they don't have Harry Wilkens back in the band and I think their former drummer Olly still is supporting the band, it's just that he doesn't play on any of the newer albums. Mike (guitars) seemed to step up his game on leads. I'm used to him being a bit sloppy, but he's done a good job on here. It seems as though they sort of lost that spunk a bit on intensity, but they're getting up there in age. Mike admits that he smokes too much weed.

The music is classic Destruction, it just seems milder. And the Dead Kennedy's cover was good, showing that punk rock influence. I'm sure Jello Biafra knows or might know about them covering his former band. Weird to hear it in thrash metal fashion. Some great remakes her of songs like "Dissatisfied Existence", etc. shows that they still have it, just slowed down a bit like I said. At least they have two of the original members, Schmier and Mike. They've gone through a bunch of drummers since Tommy's departure way back in the 80s. The band never really changed, just their newer material all sounds the same.

The production quality is top-notch. I like the sound of it and how all the tracks mixed together. Though the guitars could've sounded a little more crunch-like, but still they did a good job of remaking these tracks. It really does sound like Harry on some leads it's just not specified on here, though it has to be him. Mike can't pull off such fast leads the way Harry did. I know that he did participate in more recent albums as a guest musician. Mike's great on rhythm. He's been a good songwriter in the 80s, though their more recent material doesn't seem to change. They're not as catchy as the old stuff. Which is probably why the remakes.

I have the physical CD of this release and enjoyed it a lot. I think the first one is good as well, maybe even better. Furthermore, I liked both of them, though, and I think it was a good idea to put these songs through better production quality and mixing. I think they did a good justice to the songs from the early days. Maybe they received some criticism over the older material sounding low-budget and the new material monotonous and songwriting monotonous as well. I liked this remake the entire way through. They did a good job from start to finish. Especially enjoy the Dead Kennedy's cover as well! (Death8699)

Destruction - Inventor of Evil

BACK IN TIME:

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash Metal
This is a strong release by thrash metal veterans Destruction. Solid, quality riffs are featured on this whole release. It's amped up in intensity and the vocals have a sort of echo to them to make the atmosphere more surreal. It actually suits the music quite well. Not as strong of a release than 'The Antichrist', but it's still pretty darn good. One thing they could've cut out are the leads (Mike's). It's just too sloppy and he's never been good in that department so it's better that they have guest musicians filling that slot though now they're a 4-piece. Mike did great with the songwriting and the main riffs to songs but always lagged on leads. Harry was SUPERIOR.

I enjoyed this whole release! I would've scored it higher if (as I mentioned) the leads were taken out. They did make a great comeback which I didn't think would happen after 'Cracked Brain'. I'm glad they did return! All 'Hell Breaks Loose' was a killer comeback and I overplayed it (haha). It's hit or miss with Destruction though. Most of their early stuff I like with the exception of course their bad production quality ('Sentence of Death' and 'Eternal Devastation/Mad Butcher'). 'Infernal Overkill' hits home with me though. Their newer stuff a lot of it sounds similar to previous releases. That's the one beef I have with the band. They need to come back with their creative juices.

Fortunately, it was a good production on here and the riffs were pretty good. It was deserving of a "73" rating. There are quite a few guests on the vocal department (not that Schmier needs it) but it adds some variety to the release. And to correct I do think there are only a few guests for lead guitar. Overall, the thrash metal community stays strong with bands like Destruction setting the standard for this generation of bands putting out music in this genre. Destruction was one of the founding bands in the early 80s who really put forth a lot of original releases in that era of thrash metal. But now, they seem to blend in with a lot of other bands. 'Inventor of Evil' has a touch of the new and old work.

Production wise this release was done well! I believe they were on a budget that allowed this and spent some time in recording this. The riffs are fresh and nostalgic. I believe Schmier was strong on the vocals and Mike did well on the rhythm guitar. The fact that he's not with the band any longer makes me sad. He was the founding guitarist to the band and I guess he wasn't feeling it anymore. Band members commented on his departure that they (Schmier) were sad to see him go after all these years. But they also commented in saying that he was in poor health. At least he sounds great on here! (Death8699)

Destruction - Diabolical

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash Metal
On the first few hearings, I figured this is going to be another "recycled" Destruction album but it grew on me! The only founding member left is Schmier as Mike departed from the band after being a founding member for 39 years. Some of the material on here remind me of 'Release From Agony' as some riffs are similar to that title track way back then. The album itself is somewhat brutal in the sense of thrash brutality. It's not as hard as 'Born To Perish', but it still has its highs and lows. I enjoyed the whole album though despite the fact that it's hit-or-miss with the songs themselves. They really haven't invented anything new.

I still dig Schmier's vocals over the music it's sounding pretty good! I think that he's the driving force in the band. They're never going to play another 'Infernal Overkill' or the EP's 'Mad Butcher' and 'Eternal Devastation'. But the fact that they're still around making music is impressive. I suppose once you've got the fire it stays and even if it doesn't at least it's relatable at least the anger and fury in metal. The leads on here are pretty impressive. They remind me of their old guitarist Harry Wilkens. Now that guy can shred! But Damir does a good job on his own ground with some of fury!

The studio recording sounds pretty solid. The fact that Mike didn't show up means that they've done what they can for this album and he's out. Schmier's comment about Mike not looking healthy is right. He didn't want to change his lifestyle even at the age of 56. It's creeping up on him and it's time for the new generation of Destruction with a solid lineup. The whole album sounds solid in respect to its quality. They really tore it up but like I said not as hard as 'Born To Perish'. Still, it's got some sick riffs and leads. That being said, they still have time before they hang-it-up totally and retire. I mean Metallica is talking retirement too!

I had to order this one on CD because I enjoyed what they sounded like on here. There was one cover song by the punk band GHB the final track on the album. Destruction is showing success in the charts hitting up there! Amazing, they just released this and it's already soaring! I'd have to congratulate on another solid studio album! Wondering about the touring that they're going to be doing. If you're into thrash or some of Destruction's previous works, I'm sure you'll like this. Even though it's sort of like I said "recycled" but it still has a long of good songs on it. Check it out today! (Death8699)

Destruction - Under Attack

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash Metal
Pretty divulsion of packed thrash revolution, as they would most likely utter. One of the few left with Mike on guitar being the founding member since '82 or '83. Schmier now is one of the only founding member of the band. Still on here for guest lead guitars have Harry (ex-Destruction) who's been superb the whole way through his career with Destruction. The songs here are definitely quality! It's probably a better LP then their current on 'Born To Perish'. They put forth one great concoction of songs that totally kick ass. I thought it definitely stronger than 'Metal Discharge' and 'Spiritual Genocide'. One of their better ones!

The riffs are really cool though not as catchy as the early Destruction or late 80's work by the band. I felt that 'All Hell Breaks Loose' and 'The Antichrist' were some more modern full-lengths that caught Destruction to the core. I like the fact that they had multiple guest musicians on here except that their follow-up album from this one 'Born To Perish' features them as another 4 piece that was like in the late 80's as on 'Eternal Devastation/Mad Butcher' and 'Release From Agony'. I enjoy their era with Harry Wilkens as member of the band. He was also featured on 'Live Without Sense'. I feel that they're stronger as a 4-piece.

The sound quality on here is top notch! And the riffs are probably some of the better that dates back to early '00-'01. They diversify as well, it isn't just solely thrash, they mix it up with some clean guitar as well. Schmier sounds like Schmier where during the earlier days he has a little bit of a higher pitch voice and on their latest live CD 'Live Attack' he's a pitch lower it seems. I like him on here and the energy to this album is high! They seem to tear it up in the riff department. The vocals go well with the music. Everything goes and flows smoothly the whole way through! There wasn't a track on here that I disliked.

You can get this on YouTube, I'm not sure if Spotify has it streaming. It doesn't on mine but in any case I bought the CD. I felt like it's Destruction so there's hardly a chance of them disappointing. And I was correct! Every song on here is full of energy and great riffs. I felt that they were way strong on here though they get a good "B" rating on here. Definitely Destruction infuriation galore. These guys have the energy and originality in their songwriting. They don't let up on here and the cover track on here which I believe is Venom was well played out. And of course the outro being "Thrash Attack." Own this one! (Death8699)

Destruction - Live Attack

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash/Death
Better than live sounding Destruction with the last release featuring Mike Sifringer on main guitar. Mike left or was reported disconnected from Destruction this year. So I bought this release capturing him on the guitar department. It would've been nice had he stayed with the band since they'd become a 4-piece once again. But oh well. This release features a lot of the classics from early Destruction to 'Release From Agony' and 'Cracked Brain'. Most of the songs are from the 80's and early 90's there weren't many modern ones maybe 3-4. I guess since they may have felt that since touring has been a no-go since Covid-19 they'd play the classics.

I really enjoyed 'Live Without Sense' also, maybe even more than this live album. And I favor Harry over Damir though I have the utmost respect for both guitarists. These guys formed in '82 or '83 and remained together up until recently that two of the founding members they've had till Mike's departure. This album features some of the classic songs such as "Mad Butcher" and "Bestial Invasion" to name a couple. Like Schmier said they've covered a lot of history with this live show. To longtime fans they are of no surprise but yes, this album newer listeners get to hear the classics which they've only changed up a little bit on the guitars, but not much.

Schmier sounds pretty much the same as he always have though his voice is a little bit deeper than featuring past stuff. His work with Panzer (first two releases) has him sounding like this live release. And both new musicians Randy on drums and Damir on lead guitar perform solos showing their strength on each instrument. Olly (ex-Destruction) still favors the band and Harry (ex-Destruction) also is featured on many lead guitar appearances on their more current releases. Olly is in mainly a support but Harry was guest up until recently. Damir has filled that slot but I don't know who's taking Mike's place, I don't even think the band knows.

You can get this on the digital Spotify streaming release or buy the CD on 3 discs 2 Live Attack CD's and one Blue-ray all in one case. I bought the physical copy to support the band. And because I support bands that allow you to get their physical CD's. This one was too good to pass up. I think the production quality was good and the guitars/vocals were quality as well. This album is almost 2 hours total and as I mentioned a lot of history and a lot of classics. They really are strong on this. The energy is all there and Schmier leads the way on vocals giving a great live performance. I'm glad he re-joined the band back in 1999 and let's all say good-bye to Mike! Get this album!
