It's a toss-up for me, either 'Dechristianize' or this one 'Icons of Evil'. I don't pay attention to anyone else's reviews, so there is no influence on scores or review material latched onto. I think 'Icons of Evil' is a little less raw and I favored it a bit more than the predecessor, it was a little more death metal oriented too. I like a bit of the guitar harmonics as well. Glen sounds like he does on later Deicide releases. A little monotonous but that's alright. It fit well with the music and lyrical topics (since he is a Satanist). I enjoyed the whole album, just didn't key into the lyrics since they're not my cup of tea.

A long album, but that's a little atypical of death metal releases. The average is about 30–45 minutes, this one is over 60 minutes! I thought that it was good, though they spent a while with the songwriting. And I liked the guitars, not so much the leads, just the rhythms and harmonics (like I mentioned). Brutal music, but I thought better than the earlier Vital Remains. Too raw for me, not 'Dechristianize' but their earlier work. Wasn't a big fan of the earlier stuff. They have not released an album since this one, but they're still active. I'm not sure when they're going to come out with new music but this one and 'Dechristianize' I'll settle with.

The production was top-notch I believe thanks to Erik Rutan who's now in Cannibal Corpse replacing Pat O'Brien. I'm not sure if there are any original members left of the original band. They've gone through so many line-up changes! And even though they're continuing on the Satanic route sort of death metal they could sure put out something of the "newer" sound for the band. We'll have to wait and see. I don't think Glen is going to do any more guest lead vocals since he's still tied up with Deicide. But I'll be watching for that, and he did a great job filling in with the time that he had with the band.

I had to order these CDs from eBay ('Dechristianize' and 'Icons of Evil'). They (to me) were worth ordering. Even if it is the only two that I'll ever own of the band. Don't expect anything utter than brutal death metal with a tinge of melodic work from those albums and this one even more brutal. Both 'Dechristianize' and 'Icons of Evil' are some of my favorite death metal albums of all time. I'm glad that I took the time to wait and see how they were on Spotify before purchasing both. I collect CD's so these two are greatly precious to me. Let's just not get into the lyrical concepts! Long live Vital Remains! (Death8699)

Angelcorpse - The Inexorable

The aggression is absolutely unfathomable! I've heard blackened death metal but these guys punch a whole in the speakers! Originality in the songwriting and it's a full under an hour onslaught of pure metal. A shit-ton of blast beats and fast riffs all over. They don't seem to let-up in intensity. I was more than satisfied with this album, enough to gear that it is flawless. It really makes bands in the similar genre to be eunuchs. That's one thing that this album offers, is balls out intense. There's no nonsense on here. They were all about ripping in guitar work. The riffs are filled with tremolo picking everywhere!

All throughout the album is fast tempos. They don't want to slow-down. And the leads shrike in complexity. Pure onslaught of terror and the lyrics all about the ungod. They didn't want to put together anything but music that's no holds barred brigade. There are only a few instances where they play a little less intense but not much! Everything coming together, that's fast and furious songwriting. I don't hear much let-up at all. They just wanted to tear everything apart including the listener. I believe the guitarist Gene went on to form Perdition Temple. They are similar to this just not as intense.

The production quality was good enough to make everything fall into place. The music was well-balanced just the guitars are so fast throughout this whole album. The vocals went well alongside the music and the tempos are unrelenting. It never gets old though I warn you one listen per day of this because it's so intense. They knew what they wanted to do on here, I'd say that this is sort in the vein of a concept album. And the concept is to annihilate the eardrums! They really can play some sick metal, and their talent shows throughout this entire release. The abomination in music makes this so memorable!

I decided not to download the album, I wanted it on CD. But yeah, you have your choice and if you want into this release then show the band some support (even though they're split-up), buy the album. I'm sure if you're a fan of this particular genre, you'll enjoy this immensely. But if you really want to, I'm sure Spotify or YouTube has this album on there. Definitely not one to pass up ABSOLUTELY. These guys know how to make a dynamic and intense album all the way through. Consistency was key on here and it definitely shows. I like this band, and it's a shame that you won't be hearing more from them. Own this! (Death8699)

Brutal onslaught of death metal galore. This might be one of their best releases in their entire discography! They made some really original, unrelenting and pivotal songs ever. I cannot recall a Suffocation album being this likable. They really know what they're doing and they just did it, ABSOLUTELY! These guys knew how to pretty much invent brutal/technical death metal being an act of just enormous influence. Too many bands in the genre(s). They had some great vocals as well, it's not just the perfection in music, but yes the vocals are simply spell-binding. I can't recall listening to a death metal band like this and really liking the vocals.

The sound quality isn't the greatest though, otherwise this would be a top rating album. But it was way back when it was hard to get albums that were well produced. I think I'm right in saying that. These guys not only tore it up here but the music was mesmerizing as well. Hardcore death metal galore. This album is one that's never to be duplicated. Their debut might've been a bit more likable but both are simply amazing. I like the riffs on here a lot of tremolo picking and down-picking as well! These guys know exactly how to construct songs that are just original as all hell. They just wipe out the competition!

The sound quality, as I said, wasn't the greatest of a recording production wise but it's still admirable. The music on here is just blazing! I like what they did here but, if the recording was more solid, then I would've given this a 100%. Great band, album and rupturing genre. They know what to do music wise and they also had great vocals. Only a few things that I'd change on here. But everything else as it was phenomenal. They did the genre justice in regard to setting the tone to the genre. And just talent as well as passion here.

I know the brigade of streaming music probably has this on Spotify and YouTube, but I urge you to get the CD. I was able to pick it up at a local record store (yes those still exist!). So it's up to you to support the music community and the band themselves. You don't get the same effect as would be doing as getting a physical copy to the album. It's worth it! Sad for all of you that don't even have a CD player! It's a great album and this band is still surviving to this day! Show some respect for the music community and purchase this CD!! I doubt you will dislike it! Own it, today! (Death8699)

Gli Incantation sono una delle death metal band più violente d’America, e questo è un album cupo e opprimente, un’autentica discesa agli Inferi. Il suono è pesantissimo, da togliere il respiro, e la distorsione feroce; la voce del cantante pare quella d’un arcidiavolo. Le canzoni tuttavia, peccano d’una certa omogeneità, sicché dopo un po’ si è assaliti dalla noia. Incuranti dei trend, gli Incantation ripropongono la ricetta sonora del cd 'The Infernal Storm': parti veloci alternate a lugubri passaggi doom. I testi, come al solito, consistono in un attacco ai dogmi religiosi. Bersaglio preferenziale degli strali della band continua a essere il cristianesimo: “Rotting with your Christ” è un titolo che non abbisogna di note esplicative. Diabolici.

In Italia la scena underground è da sempre viva, ma manca e forse mancherà sempre qualcosa, che permetta a band come questi Revenant di pubblicare album a livello di media-grossa distribuzione. I cinque genovesi volevano infatti pubblicare il loro debut album, avvalendosi di una buona volontà nel riuscirci e proponendo una musica molto cattiva, particolare e teatrale. Musicalmente, ci troviamo di fronte a un death melodico per quanto riguarda il lato strumentale, mentre quello vocale è molto più estremo, direi black con inserti qua e là di parti più classicamente death. La loro proposta non è originale, ma come detto c’era (la band si è sciolta nel 2006/ndr) la buona volontà di riuscire a realizzare un progetto solido e valido perché, come sappiamo, trovare chi pubblica dischi non è mai stato facile. Questo demo cd comprende sei canzoni che comprovano quanto detto finora, in cui si vengono a creare atmosfere oscure, romantiche e teatrali in linea con i testi ispirati dai romanzi del Marchese De Sade, che rendono quanto meno interessanti i contenuti di questo demo.

This is vintage old-school death metal. It varies in the degree of brutality it has to it. Killer line-up! The production quality is good too for a 1993 release. It might seem kind of "hollow" though. It's worth taking a listen to though. That is, if you are a fan of underground music. The vocals are guttural, the guitars are heavy and distorted to the nth degree, tempos are all over the place. Definitely worth checking out they remind me a little bit like Suffocation's early days. The blast beats, the music, and the double bass drums. This is a strong album in terms of their transformation. Their newer stuff is solid as well.

These riffs on here are beyond good, they're phenomenal. The vocals fit the music, totally! The songs are full of energy and originality. I really enjoyed this release. I'm surprised that I learned about this band till much later in their days!

I'm glad that I did learn about Sinister. I bought the CD because I chose to support the band, not just load up on streaming services. The music on here is hyper intensity! They speak to the listener on how they've come together as musicians and dominating the scene!

The leads on here are good as well! I don't think there's a pause in any of this that equally slows down, it exceeds everyone's expectations. The vocals stay brutal and the music just overly compensates the production quality. The tempos are fast and furious at times. But they have a certain groove to them that only death metal bands have to offer. What a magnificent release that will not let you down. I thought it good enough to buy that's how good I thought of it. I'll admit that I downloaded this before I bought it. But I'm so glad that I did! It was never boring or repetitive. It always held extraordinary tempos and the drums did it justice! (Death8699)

Latex Baby - Stab

I Latex Baby sono nati dall’unione di Dr. Morbus (proveniente dalla death/black metal band Antrum) e Fetish X (proveniente dall’harsh noise band Involucro). Quello che vi presento oggi è il primo interessante lavoro della band (prima che se ne perdessero completamente le tracce, tant'è che non abbiamo trovato nemmeno uno straccio di sito internet/ndr). Dimostrazione di ciò è il fatto che il gruppo comparve anche nella compilation 'Death Odours' dell'importante etichetta italiana Slaughter Productions. Il primo brano ("Weak Flesh Persecution") è composto da una dinamica parte elettronica a cui si sovrappongono voci filtrate e una parte noise. I due brani successivi ("Cut-Off Throat" e "Lacerated Wombs") sono sostenuti da un riffing metal che si muove tra industial, death e black e che spesso serve solo come componente ritmico (come ossatura direi) in quanto la parte principale è affidata allo strato noise assai ben sviluppato, coinvolgente e scorrevole. È molto ben riuscita l’amalgama tra le singole partiture e sono forti le sensazioni che riesce a dare lo spesso sound di "Stab". L’ultimo brano ("Pierced Clits & Razorblades") è un morbido ed avvolgente pezzo industrial, morboso e pericolosamente attraente; potrebbe tranquillamente fare da colonna sonora a qualche bella scena del film 'Naked Blood'. È un peccato che questo lavoro duri solo un quarto d’ora; avrei proprio voluto ascoltare cosa i Latex Baby sarebbero stati capaci di fare su un full-length! Disco consigliatissimo.

Abominator - Subversives for Lucifer

Bastardi, brutali, selvaggi!!! In questo secondo album intitolato 'Subversives for Lucifer', gli australiani Abominator, che vedono tra le loro fila Damon Bloodstorm ex-Bestial Warlust, non si risparmiano nulla per tutta la durata del cd. Musicalmente si posizionano sulla stessa linea dei loro conterranei Sadistik Exekution e proprio Bestial Warlust. Otto tracce più intro e outro di furia barbarica. Violenza, e violenza a profusione con un death/black vecchia scuola. La differenza dal primo album si sente, ed è soprattutto a livello di stile. Qui il sound è molto più violento e malato. Non c'è un attimo di tregua, la batteria martella per tutto il lavoro, mentre le chitarre ultra-veloci, suonano alla stregua di motoseghe. L'utilizzo di due cantanti, con stili vocali molto differenti, è un'ottima scelta poiché aggiunge al complesso un ulteriore dose di aggressività con risultati disumani. Il terzetto australiano ha così sfornato un buon lavoro senza eccessivi sforzi, ma è comunque un disco che picchia sodo, con un occhio alla vecchia scuola e rozzo come pochi, anche per quello che riguarda la produzione, perché la registrazione non è certo cristallina, ma come sempre in questi casi, io penso "chi se ne frega!".

Gurkkhas - A Life of Suffering

Le interruzioni escogitate per questo album sono incessanti. L’album ha suoni ed evoluzioni ritmiche molto dinamiche e nitide. La batteria ed il cantato marcano costantemente questo tipo di composizione nei modi più disparati. L’insieme ha i suoi rallentamenti ad effetto, non ha velocità stratosferiche. Quello dei francesi Gurkkhas (band scioltasi nel 2003 e recentemente riformatasi) è un ottimo esempio di death metal, dove la doppia cassa e la voce gutturale segnano anche il passo dell’album. In generale tutti gli strumenti convergono in varie strutture potenti e coinvolgenti per chi vi è affine. Un attimo di pausa è inserito tra i brani alla quarta traccia con un breve strumentale, un po’ tribale e parecchio misteriosa. Poi 'A Life of Suffering' continua preciso, non sempre cupo, ma intenso di spunti trascinati e mitragliati. Questi francesi sono esperti, infatti non è il loro primo album assieme, dopo l'uscita di 'Engraved in Blood, Flesh and Souls' del 2000.

Seirim - Kill. War. Chaos.

Death/black metal classico, accostabile in parte ai God Dethroned, in quel loro creare riff di chitarra molto diretti ed incazzati. La voce è arcigna e graffiante ma si tramuta spesso anche in voce più profonda e decisamente gutturale. 'Kill. War. Chaos.' è il secondo album dei tedeschi Seirim, che hanno mosso i loro primi passi sin dal ’93 con i soliti demo e split. La prima cosa che salta all’orecchio durante l'ascolto del disco è l’omogeneità dei brani e la sua compattezza e brutalità, tutto questo – direte voi - alla lunga non stanca? Beh, a parer mio il tutto è ben congegnato e, anche se alcuni riff risultano un po’ “abusati” nel genere, ve ne sono altrettanti che donano spessore e carisma alle song. Ad alleggerire il tutto troviamo poi anche due brevi strumentali. Un lavoro dignitoso, che agli estimatori del genere potrà anche piacere.

Wrathrone/Necrodium/Spiral Wounds - Back To 90​’​s Old​-​School Death Metal

E io che pensavo che il death old school fosse ormai morto, quanto di più sbagliato. La Great Dane Records mi sta infatti facendo scoprire un sottobosco estremo che pullula di band cattive e incazzate, spesso non di grande valore a dire il vero, ma che comunque meritano la nostra attenzione e le vostre riflessioni. Quello di oggi è uno split album tra i finlandesi Wrathrone e Necrodium, in compagnia dei sardo-calabresi Spiral Wounds, per una compilation all'insegna di un sound marcescente che richiama alla memoria act del calibro di Dismember, Grave e primi Entombed, almeno nei primi tre pezzi targati Wrathrone. Un vero e proprio ritorno alle origini del male con un riffing che evoca quello delle band svedesi citate, con tanto di growling infernale sopra e assoli super taglienti in coda, per un clichè sicuramente consolidato e che fondamentalmente rinverdisce i fasti di un passato sta andato scomparendo. I nostrani Spiral Wounds si presentano con quattro pezzi, che altro non sono che il loro EP omonimo del 2021, e che evocano in questo caso, il sound primordiale degli At the Gates, con tanto di chitarre ultra taglienti e vocals iper caustiche. A questo aggiungiamo qualche influenza black che permea il mood indiavolato della band che esplicherà al meglio il proprio talento in un brano più equilibrato quale "Uber Feral Winds". Ribadisco, niente di originale da segnalare, ma sicuramente per chi amasse il genere e non conoscesse la band italica, beh si faccia avanti. Con i Necrodium si torna ad un death in stato putrefattivo, questa volta di scuola americana, e penso ai Cannibal Corpse, per gli ultimi quattro pezzi all'insegna della devastazione più totale tra voci demoniache, ritmiche schiacciasassi che trovano anche modo di rallentare, come accade all'inizio di "Compulsive Mutilating Disorder", nel cui riffing ho percepito addirittura un che dei Metallica della primissima ora. Ecco, l'ho scritto, spero non me ne voglia la band finlandese che nel frattempo prosegue la sua carneficina con altri pezzi grondanti tanta rabbia e tonnellate di odio e che vanno a completare una release adatta ai soli nostalgici di un genere che pensavo ormai morto e che invece si conferma ancora vivo e vegeto. Dead Twilight - Fall of Humanity

Quanto ascoltato nel devastante incipit di "I Hate", mi ha ricordato alcune cose dei Nocturnus che erano a loro volta mutuate dai Morbid Angel, vista la militanza del buon Mike Browning nella band di Tampa. Tuttavia non ci troviamo nè in Florida, nè negli Stati Uniti, visto che i Dead Twilight hanno origini siciliane e 'Fall of Humanity' rappresenta il loro terzo lavoro. Trattasi di un disco votato al brutal death di stampo americano in grado di annichilirci, grazie a dio, per soli 27 minuti, grazie alle otto brevi tracce qui contenute. Una serie di schiaffoni in faccia propagati da ritmiche death marcescenti, vocals cosi gutturali che ho fatto quasi fatica a identificarle (e non sto parlando di testi). Poi per il resto, è un continuo martellare ritmico che talvolta trova una pausa in un qualche bridge, come accade ad esempio a metà di "Rage from the Dead". Le influenze, oltre a quelle citate in apertura, potrebbero convogliare i nostri verso i lidi di Malevolent Creation o Deicide, altre due band che devono aver contribuito alla formazione stilistica dei fratelli Bellante che formano la band. A chi poi indirizzare l'ascolto di questo disco è molto facile: si raccomanda ai soli consumatori di brutal death e nessun altro, altrimenti rischiereste di lanciare il disco sotto le ruote della vostra macchina. E pensare che anch'io trent'anni fa mi entusiasmavo al rumore di un martello pneumatico e ora invece i miei padiglioni chiedono pietà, un qualcosa che in 'Fall of Humanity' non è assolutamente contemplata. Shrapnel Storm - Silo

Terzo album per i finlandesi Shrapnel Storm in 17 anni di carriera. 'Silo' arriva a distanza di quella bomba autointitolata uscita nel 2020, pertanto potrete immaginare come l'attesa per il nuovo lavoro fosse piuttosto alta. Tuttavia, devo ammettere che questa nuova release non mi abbia impressionato più di tanto: dieci brani più intro votati ad un death thrash piuttosto lineare che da "Wastelands" arriva senza troppi sussulti, alla conclusiva "This is Where I Fell". Ci sarà quindi qualcosa da salvare in questo disco, vi starete domandando? Si si, non temete. Le parte solistiche sono sicuramente piacevoli, l'energia sprigionata dal quintetto di Tampere è sicuramente importante, soprattutto in serate dove la necessità di riscaldarsi potrebbe prevedere un pogo incalzante ed incazzato. Per il resto, le ritmiche dei vari brani, oltre ad evocare grandi classici quali Obituary e Bolt Thrower, aggiungono ben poco. Mi piace quel basso che s'intravede tra le linee di "Justice and Glory", forte anche di un discreto coro e di un bell'assolo, peccato sia cosi breve. Poi, spazio al martellamento sismico inflitto da "Only Snake Here Is You" o dalle super distorsioni chitarristiche di "Bring Me the War" che sembrano consegnarci una band differente, sia per suono di chitarra, che per la voce del frontman, senza tralasciare le mitragliate che rilascia la ritmica. Con la successiva "Conquering the Gods", il suono sembra però perdere in potenza e la proposta della band sprofondare definitivamente nell'anonimato di un suono vecchio di trent'anni che vedrà una parziale rinascita nella dirompente "Kinslayer" e nella conclusiva "This Is Where I Fell", laddove le chitarre sembrano tornare ad essere più cristalline e potenti. Troppo poco però per rendere accattivante un disco come questo. Rimandati. (Francesco Scarci)

Hegeroth - Disintegration

Non si scherza certo con i polacchi Hegeroth che sin dal primo secondo ci fanno ballare a botte di calci nel culo con un suono dirompente, articolato e maligno, un biglietto da visita inviperito che ci introduce al quinto lavoro per la band di Katovice, 'Disintegration'. Di nome e di fatto aggiungerei io. "The Snake" ci stringe infatti nella sua morsa black metal che fa del tremolo picking la sua arma principale, accompagnato da vocals super arcigne e da ritmiche sghembe, eppur dotate di una discreta vena melodica. Pezzi brevi, diretti in pieno volto, come testimoniato anche dall'assassina "Debased" che macina riff vertiginosi, vocals pungenti, hyper blast beat ubriacanti che ci mettono al tappeto dopo pochi secondi. Per fortuna sono solo tre minuti e 40, altrimenti la fustigazione sarebbe ancor più dolorosa. E ci risparmia anche "The Dirt", con meno di tre minuti di sonorità oblique, linee di chitarra acuminate, un breve bridge e poi ancora tonnellate di riff accalcati uno sopra l'altro, il che mi ha evocato l'esordio di un'altra band polacca, gli Entropia. La scuola black in Polonia ha grandi interpreti e gli Hegeroth potrebbero collocarsi tra questi, sebbene 'Disintegration' suoni un passo indietro rispetto al precedente 'Sacra Doctrina'. De gustibus... ma a me non dispiace la dinamicità di "The Ritual", con le sue epiche melodie, il black che incontra il thrash metal in una rincorsa chitarristica da lasciar senza fiato. La contraerea continua a sparare proiettili affusolati anche in "Uplifted", un brano che a livello ritmico, ammicca non poco ai maestri Morbid Angel. Decisamente più melodico l'incipit di "The Shepherd" che, mettendo in bella mostra il tremolo picking delle chitarre, evoca il sound dei Dissection anche se poi nei giri di chitarra, riemerge forte l'influenza di Trey Azagthoth e compagni. E non ne è immune nemmeno "The Ring", in cui il frastuono ritmico irrompe definitivamente nelle mie sinapsi, contribuendone alla distruzione di massa. Da sottolineare poi in questo pezzo un uso un po' fuori dagli schemi del cantato, qui in una stravagante versione stile Brian Johnson degli AC/DC. Una chitarra sinistra apre "The Queen of Spiders", ma sarà l'unica diversificazione rispetto ai precedenti pezzi visto che poi si riprende a mitragliare fino ad un break atmosferico che interrompe il frastagliare ubriacante delle chitarre. In chiusura, " An Accident" non aggiunge nulla di che ad un disco che rischia solo di risultare un filo indigesto a chi non è avezzo a questo genere di sonorità. L'unica salvezza potrebbe essere la durata, 33 min e 33 secondi di black metal anticristiano. (Francesco Scarci)

Goatroach - Plagueborn

#PER CHI AMA: Death/Doom/Sludge

Usciti digitalmente a settembre 2022, i finlandesi Goatroach sono entrati nei radar della Sleeping Church che ne ha pubblicato fisicamente il disco un anno dopo. 'Plagueborn', debutto su lunga distanza della band di Kuopio, è pertanto pronto ad entrare nei vostri impianti stereo. Un bel tastierone apre la strumentale intro "Crawling Through the Apocalypse" e poi largo al marciume sonoro propinato dai quattro musicisti finnici in "Alone in the Universe", per un blending doppio malto, tra orrorifico sludge/doom ed una marcescente vena death. Niente di nuovo quindi all'orizzonte ma quanto proposto è comunque ben interpretato con tutti i sacri crismi e orpelli vari del genere. Un impianto di base asfittico fa infatti da contraltare al death doom old school che s'incontra nella terza "Of Guided Missiles and Misguided Men", una traccia ben ritmata, che comunque mi riconduce indietro nel tempo di quasi trent'anni, con quei suoi chitarroni belli profondi, le voci catarrose, un break atmosferico che esploderà anzi tempo, in una vertiginosa e mefitica scarica black. Che diavolo succede? I nostri ci illudono con un certo tipo di sonorità per poi colpirci a tradimento con qualcosa di più violento. E la medesima cosa accade anche nella melmosa "Rise Above the Primate", sludgy fino al midollo almeno fino al minuto 2.50, laddove ci ritroviamo sul dirupo, con vista infinito, e i nostri ci spingono giù con un'altra ritmica serrata e vorticosa che ci farà rotolare fino di sotto. Ancora suoni marci con "An Echo of Blood" e la successiva "Excarnated" che per certi versi, mi ha evocato un che dei primissimi Cathedral miscelato agli Autopsy più compassati. Interessante l'incipit di basso della psichedelica "Nykyhetki on Vain Huomisen Eilinen", accompagnato qui da un cantato pulito (e non solo) in lingua madre che ci accompagnerà attraverso contorti giochini di tastiera e dirompenti sferzate ritmiche fino alla conclusiva "Unworthy of a Grave", che chiude i 33 minuti di questo lavoro, all'insegna di sonorità fangose, pesanti e asfissianti di "neurosiana" memoria, che potrebbero di certo allietarvi la prossima giornata dei morti. I'm surprised that I overlooked this album, probably because of the production quality and 'Morbid Visions' I wasn't a fan of though I did have this one on CD. I never ended up getting 'Morbid Visions' but I had built up potential to this band after listening to this one and 'Beneath The Remains.' I wasn't a big fan of their other releases except 'Arise.' Now, I don't follow them at all especially with Max and Igor are out of the band. But it's good what the Caveleras are doing now with re-recording the first two albums I believe. Max had to relearn the early songs and for this release the thrash metal was just flowing with energy!

Without the Cavalera's, Sepultura isn't the same. That's why I stopped following them. And I thought 'Chaos AD' and 'Roots' didn't have the same Sepultura thrash that I was so used to hearing from them. No one can duplicate their early sound.

So 'Schizophrenia' was a good follow-up to their debut 'Morbid Visions' and the riffs were pure thrash with a lot of intensity. The music itself was entirely original as was 'Beneath The Remains.' I had the latter on cassette. 'Schizophrenia' I always had on CD. The music, the leads, the vocals and the drums all showed what talent this band was early on. But after each successive release seemed to be less and less thrash except 'Beneath The Remains.' I guess they didn't want to duplicate albums but they never really progress as time went on. It seemed as though they got kind of lazy especially on 'Chaos AD' and 'Roots.'

There's a lot of history behind this band and the early days where 'Schizophrenia' arrived in the metal scene was about the times was with US thrash bands were emerging aside the success Metallica had with their start to their genre. But Exhorder, Exodus, Testament, et al were seeing to pop up in the scene but with the same problem: production quality. But 'Schizophrenia' was solid. Maybe the guitars were a little bit sloppy but not really to the point where they were really a garage band to the likes of others that were emerging. The songs on 'Schizophrenia' where well constructed though depressing as hell. This is the atmosphere that they wanted! (Death8699)

This vocalist sounds like a female version of Dani Filth. There’s actually more than one tone of vocals. It’s mainly guttural throat with variations. I like it. This one tops their debut 'Echoes of the Soul.' I’m missing Sonia Anubis though but they’re still a great band. Melodies galore mixed with hardcore death metal. The leads are superb too. I weigh heavy on bands that incorporate leads in their music, a lot of them are whiskey washy but Crypta has technical guitarists that live up to their potential. The band is in their 20’s I don’t think older than this.

Everything seemed to fit in quite well the riffs, leads, vocals, production, mixing and more! They have a lot to contribute to the death metal community. After Sonia’s departure from the band, they seem to have a lineup that’s phenomenal. It took me a while to get used to the vocals on their debut but now I’m highly acclimated to them now! And they’re not just screaming they have a lot of variety. Really hardcore which goes well with the music. There aren’t many styles here, just death metal with the Dani Filth type female vocals. It goes well with the music. I like the deep throat onslaught as wel!

The riffs and leads are showing signs of immense progress since their debut came out. There’s just a lot of dynamics and variety in their music. The leads are quite technical like Sonia was. They’re not as good as her but they’re still lynching the metal genre with tremendous potential. I feel that if they continue on this path they’ll be successful. They’re a pretty new band that shows promise and hopefully people will buy their merchandise.

In some instances, the leads guitar work is wicked. Their switching off in the vocals to give the sound more variety. They shy no way but phenomenal in their efforts. I’m glad also that they have a longer album totaling in about 51 minutes in length. Every song on here has a noteworthy performance. Don’t pass this one up from your collection! (Death8699)

Apparatus - HM-2

#PER CHI AMA: Death/Black/Grind

Un lavoro di soli 4 minuti e 51 secondi srotolati in ben tre pezzi non credo mi sia mai capitato di recensire, ebbene c'è una prima volta per tutto e la mia prima volta è in compagnia dei danesi Apparatus, folle quintetto di Copenaghen che, con questo 'HM-2', approda al quarto EP della propria discografia (ora vado a controllare anche le durate degli altri lavoretti) a cui aggiungere anche due Lp e un demo. La proposta del combo danese? Il sito dell'Enciclopedia Universale della musica metal parla di "Experimental Blackened Death Metal", e in effetti, ascoltando una dopo l'altra "I", "II" e "III", i tre pezzi che compongono questo mini dischetto, ci sento subito influenze apocalittiche (ecco il blackened) che esplodono però in un bestiale death/grind, con tanto di voci urlate sovrapposte ad altre growl, per una mazzata "in your face" non troppo piacevole. Ecco, non mi è ben chiara la definizione di sperimentalismo ipotizzata dalla band in questa scarna proposta musicale, forse la durata dei brani, e se penso in particolare al terzo, di soli 35 secondi, mi sembra di trovarci schegge grind/hardcore che potrebbero emulare i primi Napalm Death. Ascoltando i precedenti album della band nord europea, questo 'HM-2' sembra più una provocazione che altro, lontano dagli standard sperimentali, jazz, death, doom del passato. Kaal Nagini - Refracted Lights of a Blind God

È sempre piuttosto facile recensire questo genere di lavoro, soprattutto se alle spalle c'è un'etichetta come la Iron Bonehead Productions, le cui produzioni sono spesso a senso unico. Fatto sta che questo 12", intitolato 'Refracted Lights of a Blind God' degli indiani Kaal Nagini, potrebbe essere la colonna sonora perfetta per una bolgia infernale, il classico gorgo da cui sarà impossibile fuggire. Si, perchè quando "Nameless Archetype of Pantheonless Antiquity" irrompe nel mio impianto stereo, la sensazione è quella di essere inghiottiti in un buco nero, in un wormhole spazio-temporale, in un maelstrom o in quel diavolo che vi pare, e la cosa più chiarà è da quel luogo ameno, dimenticato da qualunque dio esista, non ne verrete fuori perchè sarete smembrati, scorporati, dilaniati, squartati, fatti a pezzi da una tenaglia cosmica senza precedenti. È chiaro il concetto, credo di essere stato sufficientemente schietto e diretto per dirvi come i quattro pezzi inclusi in questo EP vi tormenteranno l'anima da qui all'eternità con i loro claustrofobici e annichilenti ritmi infuocati, per non parlare di quell'indecifrabile voce demoniaca che non farà altro che aumentare il vostro stato di disagio totale. La band di Kolkata ha preso gli insegnamenti di Altarage, Portal, Ulcerate, Gorguts, Abyssal e Disembowelment (per ciò che concerne le parti più rallentate, tipo nel finale di "Lord of the Two Doors and the Seven Portals"), e le ha portate ad un livello superiore o forse meglio dire inferiore, di nefandezza sonica. Pertanto, vi sentite realmente pronti per essere divorati dall'antro della bestia? Non dite poi che non vi avevo avvertito... (Francesco Scarci)

This album is totally brutal. The vocals especially! The guitar riffs shred too. Really technical playing and unique. The whole album is remarkable. It’s my first introduction to Sinister I bought the album after hearing it. Totally blown away upon first listen to. These guys have quite a discography. And most of their press is positive. Not everything, just the bulk of it. This one is totally mind-blowing. And it’s hard to keep up with the technical riffs. The vocals slay and go along well with the music.

I think it’s safe to say that I enjoyed the music over the vocals, but overall, it’s a phenomenal album. The amount of effort they have with the guitars/riffs. Really fast tempos. And the vocals are just vintage Sinister. I’m curious as to what their other albums are like. I’m willing to check out more releases. Once I get my new boombox I’m going to blare this. I already bought the CD. What a gem of a release. These guys define what good death metal should sound like!

In some portions, the vocals are redefining what brutal is what’s it should sound like! The songs are on average of five minutes approximately. The riffs vary a lot of fast guitars but some laid back though not that many. A lot of tremolo picking and some songs it just doesn’t let up! Good sound quality too in the production and overall sound. They’ve tackled this one immensely. If you buy the CD, it’s doing the band justice. Even though this is a 2006 release (but reissued in a super jewel box edition in 2022), it’s still filled with vigor.

There aren’t a lot of lead guitar work though which I don’t mind because if the solos are sub-par, it ruins the rhythms. So I’m glad that they took this route and performed mostly rhythm guitar. Their leads were just a few. So the rating scale is up there due to this and they deserved what they put out here with the music and vocals. I’m glad that the sound quality was top notch. And the mixing went well entirely. These guys kick some serious butt! (Death8699)
