Se anche per voi è tempo di nottate insonni, incubi notturni, angosce che lacerano l'animo, o pensieri che s'instillano e minano pericolosi la vostra già precaria stabilità mentale, beh allora vi suggerirei di posticipare l'ascolto a tempo debito, di questo 'The Occult Sources', opera ambiziosa del musicista francese Thierry Arnal, uno che in passato ha suonato con Fragment., Amantra, Hast & more, rilasciando i suoi lavori peraltro, su etichette tipo Denovali e Avalance, tanto per citarne un paio rilevanti per gli appassionati. Perchè il mio diretto consiglio iniziale di evitare un lavoro di questo tipo? Semplicemente a causa dei contenuti qui presenti, le cui venti scheggie impazzite di questo lavoro, enfatizzerebbero non poco, le emozioni, i sentimenti, le percezioni negative che potreste aver in seno, rischiando di portarvi quasi al delirio mentale. Non era in effetti il momento ideale nemmeno per il sottoscritto di imbarcarsi in una simile avventura o incubo musicale che dir si voglia, attraverso un flusso musicale che abbraccia paralleli mondi fantastici, esoterici, orrorifici, cibernetici e mistici, che non starò certo qui a svelarvi, tanto meno a descrivere traccia per traccia. Vi basti sapere che i segmenti qui inclusi potrebbero evocare i fantasmi di tre lavori di colonne sonore degli Ulver, 'Lyckantropen Themes', 'Svidd Neger' e 'Riverhead', grazie a quella semplicistica ma altrettanto efficace capacità di coniugare ambient, elettronica, drone e immersivi sperimentalismi avanguardistici, totalmente deprivati di una componente vocale, che qui certo avrebbe stonato. Largo allora a campionamenti in loop, strali cinematici, suoni post-atomici, mondi distopici, onde gravitazionali e altri simili suoni del cosmo più profondo, atti per lo più a trasferire un'insana sensazione di desolazione all'ascoltatore inerme. Preparatevi allora con la giusta tuta spaziale, ossigeno a sufficienza per affrontare una camminata di oltre un'ora nello spazio, uno scudo termico che vi scaldi di fronte al gelo emanato da questi suoni glaciali e sintetici e non mi rimane altro che farvi un grosso in bocca al lupo per la missione che vi apprestate ad affrontare durante l'ascolto di 'The Occult Sources', ne avrete certamente bisogno. Speriamo solo non facciate la stessa fine di 'Gravity'.  (Francesco Scarci)

#PER CHI AMA: Sludge/Doom

È un EP di una mezz'ora importante quella della multinazionale che risponde al nome di Chorosia (il cui moniker sul disco lascia intendere peraltro tutt'altro nome). Fatto sta che 'Stray Dogs' è un lavoro che arriva a due anni dal precedente - il secondo - Lp della band viennese (che include membri provenienti da Lussemburgo, Germania, Bosnia e appunto Austria), anche se l'anno scorso i nostri hanno rilasciato addirittura una Live Session di quattro pezzi. La proposta dei nostri si muove all'interno dei confini di certo post metal/sludge che chiama immediatamente alla mente i Neurosis per l'intelaiatura ritmica e le vocals un po' acide del frontman. Tuttavia la traccia d'apertura, nonchè anche title track, nei suoi oltre 10 minuti, palesa porzioni atmosferiche che si affiancano a sfuriate più brutali, senza perder comunque di vista una buona dose di melodia che si esplica in partiture dai toni mediorientali, che evidenziano quindi una certa ricerca musicale da parte dei nostri. Questo sarà ben evidente negli ultimi due giri di orologio di un brano complesso, ben strutturato e dotato di quella capacità di far collidere come sempre l'ossessività dello sludge con il groove dello stoner. Decisamente più thrash metal oriented è invece "The Shrike (Fire Assault)", costruita su un riffone d'annata su cui si inserisce la voce sporca del vocalist e un drumming non del tutto lineare. Fantastico però il cambio di tempo che porta all'assolo conclusivo che ci consegna una band in cui convive un'anima hard rock combinata con una stoner. "Tintinnabula" è il classico elemento acustico-strumentale che funge da raccordo tra la prima metà del disco e la sua seconda parte che include ancora "Reflections" e "Hands, Switchblades, and Vile Vortices". La prima delle due è un'altro pezzone di poco più di dieci minuti che si apre con atmosfere soffuse, un blando crescendo ritmico corredato da timide voci pulite che amplifica la sua veemenza verso il quarto minuto, irrobustendo il quadro ritmico e al contempo inacidendo le vocals, per completare il tutto con un bel vibrante assolo conclusivo che toglie le castagne dal fuoco dall'elevato rischio di intorpidimento mentale nel quale la band si stava infilando. Chiusura affidata infine a "Hands, Switchblades, and Vile Vortices", traccia decisamente più nervosa, rabbiosa e con una combinazione di riff che si dipana tra sludge, death-doom e sonorità oblique di dubbia natura, che chiudono un disco non troppo facile da assimilare, ma che farà comunque la gioia degli amanti del genere. Definitely a strong release by the band, in effect, a boon for the band. Great riffs and the vocal aspect is impeccable. These guys show variations in the genre which makes them quite unique. The vocals compliment the music wholeheartedly. And the mixing/production quality is strong. They’re quite diverse on here. Different styles of vocals throughout. And the riffs are ever-changing. They just seem to fluctuate tremendously.

The variation in tempos and riffs are amazing. They seem to buckle down and get this variation genre wholeheartedly. The drums are hyper vigilant as well. A lot of double bass and furious tempos.

I thought that they did well on the lead guitar aspect as well. Some bands don’t hack it with leads but they seem to hit-home with them. The variants in styles and riffs make this a diverse release. It’s never boring they’re bringing forth music that’s like no other. I love how they’re able to get that sense of fluctuation.

Mind you, this is the first time ever hearing this band. I was quite impressed with how they constructed their music. It’s quite unique and played with vigor. Some odd song titles but the music dominates.

Their guitars seem to resonate with the listener. They’re pretty much all over the place and technical. Everything seemed to be on-point with the music. Totally their own style. I suppose that it’s a known that their style of music shows various genres not just one or two. That’s probably why their genre is listed as “various.” A pure abomination on this one, they hit home with their concepts. It’s totally enjoyable to the musical listener. Follow these guy’s riffs and you’ll be amazed how much the genres they wedge into one of many different ones throughout the release. I’d be a little confused about the song titles but that’s just how they decided to put them together. A band that totally needs more recognition because they deserve it and want them to hang around the metal musical community for a long while. Get this one and you’ll be amazed. A pure abomination! Endless Pain - The Cruel Way of War

Un notevole thrash old-style caratterizza il primo demo degli Endless Pain (che evoca volutamente il titolo del debut album dei Kreator/ndr). 'The Cruel Way of War' è infatti un album intenso e pregevole dove una buona velocità si coniuga con trame di chitarre ben costruite ed una voce urlata che trovo originale in questo genere. Buone tutte le cinque tracce, anche se trovo un po’ noiosa la quarta, "Bloody War", per i suoi cambi di tempo per me anomali. La produzione è per cosi dire "artigianale”, ma questo lo posso capire essendo stato il primo lavoro del gruppo bresciano. Comunque la musica c’è e si sente la sua qualità, soprattutto dal vivo dove la batteria sembra un po’ meno semplicistica, pur essendo ben sostenuta in fatto di velocità. Sicuramente si meritano una qualità migliore in fatto di suono, ma per il momento può bastare (per gli altri quattro full length potete consultare il web/ndr). Di sicuro interesse per tutti i thrashers di vecchia data.

Katafalk - Storm Of The Horde

Certo che il nome Katafalk in italiano non suona un granchè bene e neanche un titolo come 'Storm of the Horde' non è da meno. Sono sincero: mi sono avvicinato a questa release con timore, ma allo stesso tempo con curiosità, conoscendo appieno l’assoluta qualità delle releases della Cold Blood Industries, label di assoluto valore e di innegabile gusto in ambito Brutal-Death-Metal. La biografia parlava di una band brutal con influenze thrash e black metal, e l’astio continuava a crescere. Inserisco il CD nello stereo, premo il tasto play e quello che ne viene fuori è un olocausto brutal-death senza compromessi! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!! Ma da dove cazzo vengono sti Katafalk? Da Marte??? Mai sentita una band con solo un promo alle spalle, debuttare (e da li sciogliersi in tre anni dopo un altro EP/ndr) con album di tale spessore di violenza, potenza e feeling! Da sempre l’Olanda partorisce bestie disumane in ambito brutal-death, oltre ai grandi Sinister e Howitser, chi non potrebbe ricordarsi di God Dethroned, Centurian o dei Severe Torture? Bene gente, inserite anche i Katafalk nella vostra lista perché se lo meritano davvero! I nostri cinque fringuelli olandesi sono capaci di fondere molto bene (in questo li associo ai grandiosi danesi Iniquity!) linee melodiche europee con il classico stile muro di suono brutal americano, ascoltate ad esempio la parte iniziale di “Empty Life” o della title track “Storm Of The Horde”, cazzo, non è facile fondere le parti in quel modo! Tecnicamente i nostri sono messi benissimo. I due chitarristi sono davvero bravi, ma una lode va in assoluto al batterista, una delle migliori macchine da guerra mai sentite in circolazione, capace di confrontarsi sicuramente con i colossi di oltreoceano, una furia credetemi!

#PER CHI AMA: Depressive Post Black

Avevo recensito lo scorso anno il loro vecchio EP, ‘Червів майбутня здобич’, ritorna oggi la one-man band ucraina di Kharkiv, con un nuovo brevissimo EP, ‘.​.​. а с​м​е​р​т​ь в​в​і​й​ш​л​а у т​е​б​е в​ж​е д​а​в​н​о’, la cui traduzione starebbe per ‘...e la morte è stata con voi per molto tempo’. Inevitabile che in queste parole si legga tutto il male che si sta perpretando in quelle terre nel conflitto russo-ucraino. Lo stesso male e dolore che ho sentito nelle note delle due song, “I” e “II”, che proseguono con quella mistura di post black, doom e parti atmosferiche che il buon Сергій Ткаченко (aka S., la mente dietro alla band) finisce per trasmettere lungo i sofferenti minuti di questa release. Nulla di nuovo dal fronte orientale, se non un depressive sound, soprattutto nella seconda “II”, che gronda rabbia nell’accelerazione post-black delle sue chitarre, disperazione dalle parti di tastiera e morte dalle grim vocals del mastermind ucraino, a cui dare sicuramente un significato e non lasciar scivolare via. I feel like this album was treated rather poorly among critics yet some actually had some decent ratings. Where 'Whisper Supremacy' left off this one was the other half of it (to me). It was only another 30+ minutes but it raped the eardrums like its predecessor. I really enjoyed it and gave the artist credit by buying the CD. Any little bit helps, right? In this modern age of streaming albums, artists are suffering. 'As Gomorrah Burns' was like blasting beats behind the set and lethal guitar pieces. Songs didn't overlap, they kept the intensity high and a lot of the guitar harmonics were noteworthy. Definitely worth checking out if extreme death metal is to your liking.

The vocals were a little different, mainly they were two (it sounded like) contributors so in that respect a little different then 'Whisper...' But it sure as hell went along nicely to this onslaught of a recording. They didn't let up in intensity. I liked that about the album.

What kept me interested in the album was not just the intensity, but the guitars, the vocals and the overall sound. I thought that the way there were tempo changes often again in retrospect like 'Whisper...' too! The crunch guitars sounded killer. The distortion they used, that is. The drums kept alongside the guitars quite well. These guys built a concept into what is meant by "extreme." To look at this release in a negative fashion is not fair in an overall analysis. Because what you have here is top death metal music in an abhorrent sickness. They just toppled your speakers with noise that was in the vein of other extreme acts such as newer Exhumed, et al.

The pace just never wants to let up on here. Good production quality, too. I especially enjoyed the guitars. I felt like they just took over everything tempos, leads, distortion, and harmonics. One thing that struck me was the difference in the voice category. As discussed previously, both interchanging these low bello growls with screaming kept it more interesting to get into. It was one thing that lacked on 'Whisper...'. Well, to me, that is. I feel like this is one of the top albums in 2023. It has so much substance. It blew me away. Don't just download it, buy it. Show the death metal community that you're still supporting the scene. Those of you that got rid of your CD player, well, I don't know what to tell you then. Just give it a listen to in some form!
