Orsak:Oslo - Skimmer / Vemod

#PER CHI AMA: Post/Kraut Rock
'Skimmer' e 'Vemod' sono due EP usciti rispettivamente in formato digitale a giugno 2020 e a dicembre 2021. La label tedesca Kapitän Platte ha pensato bene di prendere i due dischetti e schiaffarli su supporto fisico (vinile e cd) e darceli in pasto. Noi eravamo rimasti al loro album omonimo nel 2019 e quindi aspettavamo con un certo interesse una nuova uscita del quartetto norvegese-svedese, dato il positivissimo feedback sul precedente lavoro. Eccoci dunque accontentati con sei pezzi che propongono il classico sound post rock strumentale della band scandinava, sempre e comunque a cavallo con certa psichedelia e il kraut rock. A differenza del mio buon vecchio collega però, che osannava in un certo senso il sound dei nostri, io in tutta franchezza, non mi sento di dire che la proposta dei quattro musicisti sia cosi imprescindibile. Di album di questo genere, per quanto questo sia davvero ben suonato, ne sento e recensisco a bizzeffe, basti pensare a tutta la produzione Bird's Robe Records. Gli Orsak:Oslo alla fine non inventano nulla di nuovo, ci prendono per mano con il loro sound riflessivo ("Passage"), rilassante ("Skimmer"), estremamente atmosferico tra l'acustico e il graffiante ("Cloudburst"), l'ipnotico ("Vemod"), il pulsante ("Mod America", tra l'altro il mio brano preferito) e ancora quella proposta a metà strada tra post punk e post rock, guidato sempre da un'ispiratissima chitarra che per tutto il disco si prende la scena. 'Skimmer / Vemod' alla fine ci consegna una mezz'ora abbondante di suoni piacevoli, ma che non mi sento cosi propenso a rubare con gli occhi. (Francesco Scarci)

Behemoth - The Satanist

#FOR FANS OF: Black/Death
Being the first time reviewing Behemoth, I felt that it was necessary though they've already gotten so many reviews already of this one. So this album/band has been around for a while, but are to me being a newbie to them. And their music. I think that their style is pretty unique and cool. The guitars neatly orchestrated and played out. There weren't any songs on here that I disliked. It just took me a while to get into this one. Even though it's gotten some spins, more in this case is better. You get a better feel to what they're like as well. The band themselves are well established in the metal community.

The main thing that I took a liking to were the guitars. Definitely heavy but melodic. They pave out their own music unique qualities to them. I felt that they did well in that respect. Nergal their frontman know how to put out great music. A lot that's on here is their own style and vibe. It's dark, but still worthy of praise. Since I'm not familiar with their newer or older releases, I cannot really compare them to any of those. But they have me hooked. I'm in for the long haul with this band as long as they continue to put out quality material. And with this one, they did the band some justice. A great effort here!

I thought the atmosphere and sound quality was top notch. The vocals went well with the music. They definitely are a very dark band. And this one is an example of it. There are some blast beating on here though not to a very common occurrence. A lot of the tempos are rather slow (not all) but still well pieced together. I enjoyed this album from start to finish. I don't think any song on here isn't unique. They all did a good job at orchestrating original music along with the vibe that they portray. Nergal gives us some great musicianship and way in their genres to look for in a band.

I bought this CD because I'm a CD collector. And this band being so well reviewed, that I'd give it a try. I'm actually planning on getting more of their releases in their discography. This one was a good start though the album tittle is so grim 'The Satanist'. I'm sure that they don't want you to take it to heard, but just the fact that they are a definitely dark band who takes their music seriously in getting it to sound like the darkest pits of hell. You could probably find this one online and if you're new to the band, expect diversity in style. They really know how to get their sound out here and music awesomely played! Check this one out! Yes - Heaven & Earth

A nulla servirà l'idro-pop di derivazione anninovantesca-alla-Talk ("The Game") o anniottantesca-alla-90125-ma-che-dico-magari-90125-qui-al-massimo-siamo-dalle-parti-di-big-generator ("It Was All We Knew"), o le risibili orchestrazioni finto-soundtrack in apertura di "Subway Walks", non servirà individuare (se non con certosina motivazione) qualche levigato etno-barocchismo alla Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe ("Light of Ages", ma per non più di un paio di minuti) né certe fotocopiose architetture mid '70s (le scalette finali di "Believe Again" – dove oltretutto potete apprezzare una sfacciata clonazione del Top Gun anthem di Moroder, proprio nelle note iniziali; il botta-funky-risposta basso/tastiera di "Subway Walls"), né infine, la conclamata consapevolezza che gli episodi migliori di questo 'Heaven & Earth' sembrino, alla meglio, outtakes dei peggiori Yes ("Tormato"? "Big Generator"? "Open Your Eyes"? Ce ne sarebbero a volontà). Il fatto è che se la musica della band composta dai membri umanamente più disgustosi della sovente umanamente disgustosa storia del rock non ha ancora inspiegabilmente cominciato a farvi schifo allora lasciate stare, perché questo album è talmente scialbo e sciatto e insignificante che non riuscirà a farvi cambiare idea nemmeno su questo. Anthropolatri - V Svete Kostrov

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

Ecco a voi un duo di ucraini panslavisti... I nostri eroi Lazar e Vogneslav dedicano il loro album "all'orgoglio del popolo serbo", e non dimenticano di salutare nel booklet "tutti i fratelli di sangue di Ucraina, Russia, Bielorussia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Polonia, Rep.Ceca, Slovacchia, Moravia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Bosnia" e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Stranamente le dediche sono in lingua inglese, tutto il resto è in ucraino: curioso no? C'è da segnalare una collaborazione alle tastiere da parte di Saturious (Nokturnal Mortum). Il genere praticato dal duo panslavista è un black metal che ha nelle vocals, gracchianti e di quando in quando davvero stonate, il suo limite principale. Tuttavia liquidare sbrigativamente questo album sarebbe ingiusto: le atmosfere che vi si respirano sanno essere, talvolta, piuttosto suggestive. Il pezzo migliore dell'album è senza ombra di dubbio quello d'apertura: puro folklore ucraino senza alcuna componente metal. Da ascoltare. Le rimanenti sette canzoni si collocano sul versante del black metal con venature epiche.

Blood Red Throne - Fit To Kill

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Death
I'd have to admit that I was skeptical regarding this follow-up from Blood Red Throne's previous release 'Union of Flesh and Machine'. I didn't think it possible to top that one, but this one is superb. I like everything about it. The guitars, both rhythm and lead, the production, vocals and intensity. They proved very strong here, songwriting skills for them are getting even better. The music is what grapples the most. Some of the vocals are changed up from low-end to higher-pitched screams. The bulk of the album features the low-end vocals though. It fits the music perfectly. The sound quality is top notch, too. All of the songs just crush.

What's lacking in the death metal community is that bands go from sounding promising to splitting up because of technology and a lot don't progress. It's the exact opposite. I don't mean all death metal bands, but a lot of them. Or they change their style of music. Horrified is a good example of a death metal band that turned to melodic death but melodic death that's just "out there." Blood Red Throne is staying true to their roots and continue to get better and better. In essence, it's going to turn into more followers, listeners, in short, FANS. They sure have me as a long-time fan. It's going to stay that way too, I hope.

The music and vocals are the highlights of this album. Nothing tops this one out of their entire discography in my opinion. The guitars just have great riffs to them and the leads are immaculate. Really everything is with sheer and utter precision. The vocals compliment the guitars and keep it sounding really underground. All the tracks are good and the songs are lengthy. But they never dissuade your attention. Nothing fizzes out on this release. It's anything but "boring." The screams give the songs a little more diversity. It's not just low bellowing grunters. It fluctuates completely.

The fact that this band continues to progress will keep me supporting them. Buying physical CD's really helps the band, but in this day and age, everything is digital. It's good that CD's are still available. I'm sure that they'd appreciate the fact that you buy their albums or listen first then if it's liked buy the physical CD. Do yourself a favor and download 'Fit To Kill', then order it. You won't be disappointed either way, or both ways! Support Blood Red Throne and get it! (Death8699)


District Unknown - Anatomy of a 24 Hour Lifetime

Al di là degli ineludibili significati (affatto) sovrastrutturali, l'album d'esordio della prima e forse unica metal band afghana fornisce inedite topologie musicali, specialmente negli episodi più lisergici/desertici ("Whisper in a Dream," lo strumentale introduttivo "Modern Nature", caotico quanto una tempesta di sabbia e a tratti quasi groove, oppure i panorami psych/esplosivi di "Two Seconds After the Blast", approssimabili a certe cose lunghe dei The Doors, o anche il doom stupefatto di "Struggle" con tanto di stupefacente(mente lunga) intro elettronica) o psych/prog ("Portraits", lo strumentale "A Cancer by Design" ha forse qualcosa dei Genesis di 'Foxtrot'? O dei Beatles di 'Abbey Road'?). Eclettico e funzionale il sound, conseguenza di una produzione per niente amatoriale, ma decisamente debole il cantato in pulito ("Joy Versus Sorrow" e ancora in "Portraits"). Costituiti in piena era taliban, per un certo numero di anni i District Unknown si sono esibiti in patria clandestinamente e col volto coperto così da sfuggire alle persecuzioni. Poi pensi a quei cretini di fascistelli svedesi provvisti di chitarre-mitra e batterie-carrarmato che giocano a fare la guerra sul palco, sì, ma sempre restando ben fuori tiro. O a quegli altri idioti metallari multimiliardari dei miei coglioni spelacchiati provenienti dall'Iowa che giocano a fare i serial killer di questa beneamatissima fava. Gente che a Kabul non durerebbe più di dieci minuti cronometrati. (Alberto Calorosi)

Death Angel - The Dream Calls For Blood

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash Metal
This album is solid, it has a flare or flame to it with sheer energy flowing. These Bay Area thrashers have been active for quite some time! Pretty much 30 years it's safe to say. And they're still making good music. This one isn't their best, but it isn't their worst either. Quite a variety of sounds coming from acoustic guitar-work but mostly thrash guitar riffing. The leads were decent, too. But I really enjoyed the rhythms. And the vocals of course! They go well with the music. Most of the songs are high energy! They have that Death Angel groove to them as well. Kind of like on their earlier work 'Act III'. But not entirely.

These guys are killer live as well. Too bad no concerts in Covid-19. The band keeps making killer music even up until now. They're veterans, safe to say that. They still have that intensity to their riff-writing. I would say all the songs I liked pretty much. I think the vocals carry the music and overall energy to the record. They really need to keep going in this thrash metal direction. And the riffs are pretty original sounding (like always). They change things up a bit but not that much. I like the guitars the tone is chunky. They don't need to hold back in their writing. They know exactly what they're doing.

The production quality was excellent it did them justice. And they didn't really need to change anything on here. I like the music the most but the vocals just have so much intensity. Not ALL THE TIME but a lot of the time. Their tempos change up quite a bit which gives the music variety. I cannot stress enough of the guitars sounding KING. They're just so darn catchy. The lead trade-offs too are phenomenal. It's a sheer domination! There's only a few places where you find some real screaming. But not an overabundance of it. The intensity of the guitars it goes well with.

This is a later album in their career as thrash metal musicians. They're still killing it! Support the band! One things to notice are the guitar riffs. They're really catchy and original. They're totally slaying! This release is just sheer domination. They really know what they're doing and how to make cool, original thrash metal. There's an abundance of energy to the record that it just soars. I liked this the whole way through the album. Totally recommended for thrash metal lovers and support the Bay Area thrashers Death Angel! (Death8699)

Procol Harum - Novum

#PER CHI AMA: Prog Rock
Patinati claptonismi bluesrocchettari finesettanta ronzanti dalle parti di 'Backless' ("Image of the Beast") oppure iperpatinati claptonismi poprocchettari iniziottanta bighellonanti dalle parti di 'Money and Cigarettes' ("I Told on You"). Accomodatevi. Nel prosieguo, l'attitudine rock/80's/pop di 'Soldier' ("Runaway Train" vs. "Wonderful Tonight") e quella Eltonbattabernie-Johnbarrataupin di "Don't Get Caught" non mutano un registro narrativo già consolidato almeno dai primi '90, vale a dire da 'Prodigal Stranger' in poi, movimentato (quasi esclusivamente) dalle (a dir poco) bizzarre liriche composte dall'attempato e senilmente disinibito Gary Booker ("Last Chance Motel" è una efferata murder ballad, l'avreste mai detto? "I Told on You" una furente invettiva nei confronti di un collega musicista, l'avreste mai ridetto?) e cineticamente convergenti nei medesimi modi metereologici nei quali in un mondo ideale, un uragano di classe cinque convergerebbe verso l'abitazione di Paperostarnazzante Trump, convergenti, dicevo, inesorabilmente verso "Sunday Morning", singolo designato, pretestuoso zenit creativo di questo pasticciato album nonché pallida scimmiottatura (là c'era l'Aria sulla quarta corda di Giannino Bach e due tonnellate di Hammond, qui l'altrettanto celebre Canone in Mi di Giannino Pachelbel e due tonnellate e tre quintali di Hammond) di quella celeberrima hit sull'impallidimento improvviso della ragazza mentre ascolta la storia del mugnaio scritta cinquant'anni addietro che troverete menzionata in qualunque stramaledetto articolo musicale sui Procol Harum dal sessantotto a oggi tranne che in questo. Trattasi d'altronde dell'unico debole trait d'union tra lo stiracchiato presente e l'hammondosissimo, sinfonicissimo (e comunque acclamatissimo) passato. Non vi pare sufficiente? (Alberto Calorosi)
