Progetto musicale che vede coinvolto un componente degli Hate Eternal, i Council Of The Fallen propongono un’ottima combinazione di black e death metal con influenze dalla scena svedese (Dark Funeral, tanto per non fare nomi), il tutto riletto alla luce della “tradizione locale” americana. Il bello di questo album è che, pur essendo tirato e aggressivo, non scade mai nella cacofonia fine a se stessa. Talune canzoni si concludono, però, in modo poco razionale. I testi, pur tenebrosi, non citano mai – esplicitamente - il Signore di questo mondo, e il fatto che si siano risparmiate le ormai trite e ritrite litanie a Satana è senz’altro encomiabile. Certo qualche ovvietà – a livello di contenuti – non ci è risparmiata (quante volte avremo già sentito frasi come “I am my own god?”. Dostoevskij si starà rivoltando nella tomba!). I brani peccano tuttavia, almeno musicalmente, di una certa omogeneità. Ma questo è un difetto cui, purtroppo, oggigiorno pochissimi si sottraggono.

Fluisteraars - De Kronieken Van Het Verdwenen Kasteel - II - Nergena

#PER CHI AMA: Pagan Black

Ho recensito la prima parte di questo trittico di EP 10", degli olandesi Fluisteraars, mi sembrava quindi doveroso darvi un feedback anche sul secondo capitolo, in attesa del terzo atto. Beh, la band la conoscete, auspico tutti, e si fa portavoce di un black furioso, mistico e misterioso. Le melodie di "De Maan, Zon Van de Doden", che aprono 'De Kronieken Van Het Verdwenen Kasteel - II - Nergena', minimizzano quell'incedere distruttivo ma, direi meraviglioso, che contraddistinguono il pezzo. Un eco dei Negura Bunget a livello percussivo e nell'utilizzo di inusuali strumenti sonori, accompagnati dalle catramose vocals di Bob Mollema, mi fanno sussultare dalla sedia per un brano che vede un finale più doomish e venato da tinte folkloriche. Spettacolare, cosi come auspico lo sia altrettanto il side B del disco, "De Mystiek Rondom de Steen des Hamers". E questa, pur risultando in apparenza più lineare del side A, non delude le aspettative, e nella sua maestosa epicità, conferma la bontà della band olandese e una crescita musicale davvero invidiabile. Il Fiume - Brucia

#PER CHI AMA: Grunge/Indie

Diavolo, non la cosa più semplice da recensire da parte del sottoscritto. Quello de Il Fiume è infatti una versione italiana del grunge sporco e incazzato di primi anni '90. Ascoltando "Ancora", la traccia d'apertura di 'Brucia', ho sentito infatti forti influenze provenienti da 'Bleach', senza trascurare tuttavia un'aura malinconica che sembrerebbe derivare dai primi Smashing Pumpkins. Mi dovrà scusare la band se il mio background musicale in questo ambito non sia cosi esteso, e conosca solo i capisaldi del genere, ma quei mostri sacri che hanno scritto un'epoca, li ritrovo nello scorrere di queste sette tracce. Qualcosa di simile anche nella seconda song, la title track, in cui ancora l'eco di Kurt Kobain e soci, periodo 'Nevermind', si palesa nel refrain delle chitarre e in un cantato in italiano che ben ci sta in questo contesto indie-grunge rock. Graffianti le linee di chitarra di "Frustrazione", che mostra suoni più sghembi e distorti rispetto ai precedenti, ma la brevità dei prezzi, la linearità delle melodie, il cantato nella nostra lingua madre, rende comunque facilmente fruibile (e apprezzabile) l'ascolto di 'Brucia'. Certo, non siamo davanti a chissà quale capolavoro artistico, ma il disco de Il Fiume si lascia piacevolmente apprezzare in tutti i suoi brevi e immediati brani, di cui sottolineerei ancora la psichedelia di "Karma Armonico" e la robustezza ritmica di "Ne Porto il Ricordo", che ammicca, con i suoi suoni nudi e crudi, ad un mix tra punk e hardcore. A chiudere l'EP, la più intimista e straziante "Qualcosa" che delinea a tutto tondo la proposta musicale de Il Fiume. (Francesco Scarci)

Maul - Desecration and Enchantment

Un po' di sano marcescente death metal dalla Svez...no ho sbagliato, dagli Stati Uniti. La band originaria del North Dakota mi ha un po' spiazzato in effetti con questo 'Desecration and Enchantment', visto un sound che sembra essere devoto, almeno inizialmente, a quello "made in Sweden" dei Grave, ma che in realtà nel corso dell'ascolto, muterà più volte, abbracciando anche influenze floridiane (e penso agli Obituary). Questo è quello che si evince dall'iniziale "The Sacred and The Profane / Hovering, Sinking", song che li per li, mi stava portando a bollare questo EP come l'ennesima proposta priva di personalità. Invece, il dischetto palesa influenze esoteriche, doom, sludge e quant'altro. Signori, questi sono i Maul, quintetto di Fargo, che vi saprà ammaliare con la propria proposta estrema si, ma al contempo melodica, oscura, malefica, contraddistinta da profondi chitarroni, growl mefitiche, ma anche parti atmosferiche e mid-tempo ("Disintegration of the Soul"). La seconda traccia mostra anche il lato più progressive, dei cinque brutti ceffi americani, in una song comunque ricca di colpi di scena tra break acustici, ripartenze black e un sound comunque coinvolgente. La versione in cassetta include anche una terza song, "Worshipping Self-Deviance", ma ahimè non è nelle mie mani. Quindi cercate voi la tape e date una chance a questo lavoro. (Francesco Scarci)

Burner - One For The Road

Prendete Pantera, Monster Magnet, i Serpent di 'In the Garden of Serpent', aggiungete un pizzico di sonorità seventies, shakerate il tutto, e otterrete 'One For The Road': un album davvero notevole. "Five Pills (and a Bottle of Whiskey)" si candida a diventare l’inno di questa fanzine, altro che Mameli. Eccellenti riff di chitarra contribuiscono a disegnare atmosfere torride ("No Regrets" o "Empty") e decadenti ("Whiskey Dick" e "Color"). La magnifica strumentale "At Ease" vi trasporterà con l’immaginazione sulle rive di un fiume placido. Se fra i vostri album preferiti figura 'Powertrip' dei Monster Magnet, non lasciatevi sfuggire questo 'One For The Road', fulgido esempio di ottimo stoner. Grandi Burner!

It's a toss-up for me, either 'Dechristianize' or this one 'Icons of Evil'. I don't pay attention to anyone else's reviews, so there is no influence on scores or review material latched onto. I think 'Icons of Evil' is a little less raw and I favored it a bit more than the predecessor, it was a little more death metal oriented too. I like a bit of the guitar harmonics as well. Glen sounds like he does on later Deicide releases. A little monotonous but that's alright. It fit well with the music and lyrical topics (since he is a Satanist). I enjoyed the whole album, just didn't key into the lyrics since they're not my cup of tea.

A long album, but that's a little atypical of death metal releases. The average is about 30–45 minutes, this one is over 60 minutes! I thought that it was good, though they spent a while with the songwriting. And I liked the guitars, not so much the leads, just the rhythms and harmonics (like I mentioned). Brutal music, but I thought better than the earlier Vital Remains. Too raw for me, not 'Dechristianize' but their earlier work. Wasn't a big fan of the earlier stuff. They have not released an album since this one, but they're still active. I'm not sure when they're going to come out with new music but this one and 'Dechristianize' I'll settle with.

The production was top-notch I believe thanks to Erik Rutan who's now in Cannibal Corpse replacing Pat O'Brien. I'm not sure if there are any original members left of the original band. They've gone through so many line-up changes! And even though they're continuing on the Satanic route sort of death metal they could sure put out something of the "newer" sound for the band. We'll have to wait and see. I don't think Glen is going to do any more guest lead vocals since he's still tied up with Deicide. But I'll be watching for that, and he did a great job filling in with the time that he had with the band.

I had to order these CDs from eBay ('Dechristianize' and 'Icons of Evil'). They (to me) were worth ordering. Even if it is the only two that I'll ever own of the band. Don't expect anything utter than brutal death metal with a tinge of melodic work from those albums and this one even more brutal. Both 'Dechristianize' and 'Icons of Evil' are some of my favorite death metal albums of all time. I'm glad that I took the time to wait and see how they were on Spotify before purchasing both. I collect CD's so these two are greatly precious to me. Let's just not get into the lyrical concepts! Long live Vital Remains! (Death8699)

Bolt Gun - The Warren

#PER CHI AMA: Black/Post Metal

Avete presente il buon Iggor Cavalera dei Sepultura? Ebbene, si è messo in "società" con gli australiani Bolt Gun per rilasciare questo EP, intitolato 'The Warren', che dovrebbe fare da apripista al terzo lavoro dei Bolt Gun. Due pezzi comunque all'insegna di un caustico black/post metal che si palesa piuttosto convenzionale (per non dire piattino) nei primi due minuti della prima parte di "The Warren" per poi mutare completamente pelle con l'intervento di un elegante sax che rompe quel ritmo ridondante di un incedere maltoa che sembra poter gonfiarsi, crescere ma in realtà rimane strozzato fino a quando esplode una ritmica martellante e distopica, un assalto all'arma bianca che non fa prigionieri. La chiusura del primo brano è lasciata a claustrofobici suoni ambientali che ci preparano alla seconda parte del brano, "The Warren Part II". Qui l'incipit atmosferico è melodico, introspettivo, triste, per poi virare verso l'inquietante, il sinistro fino a che compare il drumming potente di Iggor in uno scenario che ha quasi dell'apocalittico, sebbene sembri che confluiscano nel sound della band influssi di matrice jazz. Le chitarre ripartono su un black mid-tempo, accompagnate dalle vocals strazianti del frontman e di una dinamica sonica che ancora una volta sembra poter decollare grazie al ringhiare delle chitarre che sommergono di note la voce del cantante che si perderà sotto una fitta e opprimente coltre di rabbia e negatività. Ora non posso che aspettare con ansia il full length. (Francesco Scarci)

I thought this release was WAY underrated! I really like the guitars, drums, vocals, the whole sch-peal. I think that this band evolved over the years, some for the good, but most for the worst. Not on here, though, they have my utmost attention. I'm fussy when it comes to black metal. If an album is overruled by synthesizers, I'm not interested. They didn't go overboard on here. Everything was in sync with everything else. I cannot stress that enough. They really kicked ass on here, the musicianship is just insurmountable. I think the album is good the whole way through. Everything is original sounding and the vocals slay.

With the help of Galder on lead and Hellhammer behind the drum-kit, this is a no fail release to me. I don't care about other people's opinion on here. It's totally catchy and original guitar-work. And Hellhammer simply crushes as usual. This band should have progressed, but their latest is really terrible. I stopped following this band after this release. I just thought this was the last monument. The album 'Death Cult Armageddon' another one that slays. But I like this one more. Hence, the higher rating. They should've chronically recruited Hellhammer and Galder, but Silenoz has always been killer.

The music on here is what hits home for me. They really do the album justice with the songwriting on here. They don't overuse the synthesizers. But the aura is totally grim. As with past releases, as well. They really need this album for a change and the rhythms are just entirely dramatically well orchestrated. The riffs I look at most on albums being that I was a former guitar player. It just comes natural to me. The whole effort as a band on here is just phenomenal. They really kick ass here. The drums keeping in sync with the music. It's completely there all the way and the choruses are enigmatic.

Check this one out! It's definitely worth it. For black metal fans or just people who like metal, this release is a killer one! Everything on here is worth checking out, the music, the production quality, the vocals and the drums. Everything on here is just amazing. This album is filled with intriguing auras and high points. It's entirely amazing, and they picked an all-star cast. Hellhammer slays behind the drum-kit. And Galder does a great job on lead. But the rhythms are entirely original. Some of the variations in the vocals are intriguing as well. Get this album right now! (Death8699)
