#PER CHI AMA: Heavy/Black'n'Roll

In tutta sincerità con una copertina del genere, mi sarei aspettato sonorità dal piglio progressive, invece i polacchi Ifryt (one-man band guidata da tal Kuna) irrompono con questo loro EP di debutto, intitolato 'Płuca', con un heavy black'n'roll, e tre cavalcate che già dall'iniziale "Klucz Salomona", evidenziano un approccio chitarristico speed metal vicino a certe cose di Running Wild/Judas Priest, mentre le vocals si avvicendano tra uno screaming propriamente black e un cantato pulito, mai troppo convincente, a dire il vero. Positivo a livello solistico, ma già da questo primo pezzo si notano zone d'ombra. Si prosegue allora con un ascolto ancora più attento della successiva "Kona Allah", un'altra scheggia speed black dal suono piuttosto anacronistico, anni '80 per intenderci e stile Celtic Frost, in cui salverei solo il lavoro delle chitarre nella parte solistica, per il resto niente, ma proprio niente di nuovo dal fronte orientale. E andiamo ad ascoltare il terzo e ultimo brano, i dieci minuti secchi di "Straszne Rzeczy", che parte con delle spoken words su di una porzione ritmata, prima di esplodere in una poltiglia di suoni arraffati alla bell'e meglio. Tra accelerazioni black, parti atmosferiche, vocalizzi blackish, porzioni folkloriche, partiture dissonanti, cori puliti in polacco e solismi affatto male, l'unico difetto sembra essere legato ad una certa mancanza di armonia tra tutti questi elementi. Tuttavia, devo ammettere che questo potrebbe essere un buon punto da cui partire con un sound più avanguardistico, se meglio concepito e strutturato. Si attendono sviluppi da questo cantiere aperto. I actually like this album more than their newer material! The music is better, so is the production and vocals. Quite an array of thrash galore and not so much death metal here, they seem to blend those two genres together. The vocals are a little different from what I'm used to, but the music is top notch! A lot of memorable riffs here and quite a sum of variety, too! Everything fit together on this release. Nothing seems to really lag, the energy is high up there. All 10 tracks (but the last release under Hammerheart Records, has 17!) are good, there weren't any that I though were lesser than others. They really seemed to put their creative juices to work on this one.

One thing that I won't get into are the lyrical concepts. Everything else I'm pretty open to on here. This is a second album I've heard from this band and I'm really liking what I'm hearing! The guitar riffs I've paid close attention to and I've concluded it's probably their best in existence! I took the liberty to find this on CD because I really want to hear it in my stereo, not nauseating headphones. They don't have a mountain full of followers nor press, so helping this band is the best way to show they mean business in the metal realm. I've done my part and if you're not convinced, it's your issue.

This is somewhat of an old-style production type of recording, but everything seemed to be mixed well! The guitars and vocals I paid most attention to. I've found that there's not an overabundance of lead guitar going around here, just enough. That's something I found fault in their more recent recordings. The rhythms were straightforward and somewhat technical. But they sure as hell made catchy riffs! They were pretty original in their songwriting. I didn't find much flaws in their playing, they were immaculate! The voice went well with the music! I've found the music to be the most likable aspect to this release.

As I've said, show some support to this band and buy the CD! It's worth it, to those who still have CD players! Spotify and YouTube both feature this album. I would take an hour out of your time and take a good listen to this release! It's worth your time. I wouldn't be urging you to do it if I didn't believe it to be true! Thrash galore and the riffs are hell of a lot of creative in this genre of metal! I'd like for this band to stay in existence for a while longer even if it just amounts to a few good releases. But like I said, I've found all the albums I've heard from this band to be palatable! Check them out! (Death8699)

Probably the most catchy Iron Maiden release that I've ever heard. And I've been into metal for over 30 years! The chorus's are epic and the rhythms are unique as all hell. The leads amazing and Bruce on vocals never disappoints! The riffs and vocals are how this album shines. Not a song here that is "bad" or "bogus." They all are amazing! I'm surprised that I became a Maiden fan so much later on in their career. But that's alright, I'm able to enjoy it now! The guitars and vocals especially. They put on a great live performance as well! The songs sound as good as they are on the album.

This whole album rocks, there isn't a song on here that's devoid of glory. Every song is a highlight and for a 40 year old album the production is good. I got the remastered version but still! All the instruments were well mixed. Hands down, my favorite Maiden release! The songs are just epic! The lead guitars smoked as well. They sound just as good live as they do on the album. Maybe even better! These guys are the pioneers in heavy metal. If you just take a listen to this one if you're a critic and you'll hear what I mean. They're a 5-piece on this one live there were 6 members. Man do they crush live!

Bruce sounds great on here and he had to battle throat cancer. Of course, this was way back in the early 80's when he was in his prime. He still sounds good though at 64 years old. I'm glad I got to see them perform before they retire. It doesn't seem like they're going to though, I think there's still the fire in all of them. I still need to build up my Maiden collection I only own two of their releases. Good thing that there's a local record store that stocks a lot of METAL!! I made sure to get this one first since I've heard it before. It's no surprise that there's 30 reviews for this album! A lot of say about it!

Do yourself a favor if you're a newbie in heavy metal start with this Maiden album! Buy the CD, don't just stream it. But well, if you're going to stream it first get a physical copy next if you aren't convinced. The guitars, vocals and vibe is all there. "Aces High" and "2 Minutes To Midnight" are my favorite songs from this one. But they're all good. The originality in the guitars and Bruce's voice is top notch. The range is there and Bruce just smokes. This guy can really sing. The guitars go well with the vocals. Do yourself a favor and pick this up it's worth its weight in gold! (Death8699)

Rainer Landfermann - Mehr Licht

#PER CHI AMA: Experimental Black/Avantgarde

Nuovo EP per il polistrumentista teutonico, ex Bethlehem (ma anche ex Pavor e Lovelorn), Rainer Landfermann, un tipo fuori dalle righe non c'è dubbio, estraneo ad ogni clichè del genere, ma d'altro canto cosa aspettarsi da chi ha suonato nei mitici Bethlehem? Solo due però i pezzi a disposizione per saggiare l'avanguardismo sonoro del musicista di Bonn. E diamine, che proposta fuori dal comune quella del buon Rainer che già dall'iniziale title track, propone un sound che miscela musica classico-orchestrale (stile Angizia) con vocalizzi black, una tonnellata di synth e chi più ne ha, più ne metta. Per non parlare poi del delirante incipit della seconda "Originalstimme", un pezzo che parte totalmente sghembo nella sua dissonanza sonica, a cui aggiungere poi delle vocals quasi salmodianti per una specie di sacro rituale, spezzato da bizzarre folate jazzistiche che sparigliano completamente le carte in tavola. Non certo un EP facile a cui accostarsi, ma comunque un lavoro che mostra un gran coraggio nel proporre musica fuori dai consueti canoni sonori. Voto più basso solo per l'esigua durata del 12". Alas - Absolute Purity

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

#PER CHI AMA: Progressive Metal

Ottimo esordio (rimasto poi tale) per questi Alas, band floridiana capeggiati dal grande Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, ex-Mordid Angel), forse non del tutto originalissimo come concept, ma sicuramente ben suonato e presentato ottimamente per quanto riguarda la veste grafica (Niklas Sundin) e la promozione. Per quanto riguarda la musica poi, ci troviamo davanti ad un ottimo progressive metal con delle buone trame di chitarra (e come potrebbe essere diversamente!) ed una sconvolgente voce della ex cantante dei Therion Martina Astner, che svolge egregiamente il compito affidatole. A chiudere il quadro ci sono due ottimi musicisti: Howard Davis (ex batterista dei Genitorturers e Die Krupps in tour) e Scott Hornick (poliedrico bassista dei Dim Mak con influenze jazz-fusion metal). Come accennato all’inizio, niente di originale od innovativo, ma lo considero come un ottimo ripasso per tutti gli amanti dei Therion più sinfonici et similia.

#PER CHI AMA: Black/Death

Moonreich atto III, almeno qui nel Pozzo dei Dannati, con questo quinto capitolo della loro discografia, ‘Amer’, che sembra consegnarci una band in forma dopo le fatiche del periodo Covid. Il disco include cinque nuove tracce per 43 minuti di sonorità dissonanti di scuola Deathspell Omega e su questo non avevo dubbi, condividendo il paese d’origine delle band, la Francia, che sembra aver imbastito una scena estrema che si muove proprio sulle orme dei maestri Blut Aus Nord e Deathspell Omega appunto. Quindi, il duo di Parigi si lancia con questa nuova prova miscelando ancora un death black con visionarie ed estemporanee porzioni sperimentali. Ascoltatevi il break improvviso di “Of Swine and Ecstasy”, un pezzo spigoloso ma che racchiude stralunate trovate artistiche sia a livello ritmico che solistico, con ventate di melodia che si mischiano a bordate nucleari. Le medesime che prendono fuoco nella seconda “Amer”, la title track, un concentrato di death black senza troppi fronzoli, fatto salvo per un malinconico rallentamento nella seconda metà del brano che ne controverte il mio giudizio finale, un po’ abbottonato fino a quel momento. Il disco comunque prosegue su coordinate similari, tra rasoiate ritmiche dal piglio post-black (“Astral Jaws”), laceranti rallentamenti atmosferici, voci addirittura grooveggianti (“Where We Sink”), ma anche una certa venatura progressiva che sembra chiamare in causa Enslaved e The Ocean (ancora “Astral Jaws” e la lunga – oltre 13 minuti – e tribaleggiante “The Cave of Superstition”). ‘Amer’ alla fine è un lavoro complesso, che forse all’inizio potrà puzzare di già sentito, ma che dopo innumerevoli ascolti, potrebbe invece rivelare interessanti aspetti che inizialmente rimangono celati dietro ad un ascolto superficiale. Un disco a cui dare più di una chance. (Francesco Scarci)

2 Ton Predator - Boogie

#PER CHI AMA: Thrash/Groove, Crowbar, Pantera

Questa band ha uno stile molto cadenzato che ricorda i The Haunted. Tuttavia, gli svedesi 2 Ton Predator mostrano un'impostazione più hardcore e meno ad effetto. Il thrash vecchio stampo che propongono ha un cantato con cori che si rifà a Phil Anselmo ai tempi di 'Vulgar Displayof Power', e nel complesso è introverso, ritmato alla maniera di un boogie, piuttosto sciolto ed intensamente metal. In alcune canzoni il sound sembra più sostenuto mentre in altre un po' più pensoso, triste o articolato, ma sempre dotato di un’ottima registrazione. Troverete canzoni a volte pesanti e lente ("4 Tounges Strong") ma sempre a tono con l’insieme, comunque dovrebbero essere un po’ più personali come nell’ultima "Empty Chambers" e non suonar solo ciò che gli piace, benchè ben fatto ed accattivante, ma troppo influenzato dai Pantera. Inoltre, con lo scorrere dell’album, prevale un'impostazione più lenta in linea con qualcosa dei vecchi Sacred Reich.
