Edenshade - Love Injuring Criteria

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

Alea Jacta - Spirits in Oblivion

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

Divercia - Modus Operandi

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine
Vogliamo citarne alcuni? Finntroll, Amorphis, Lost in Tears e Throes Of Dawn.

Carcass - Heartwork

BACK IN TIME:
http://www.secret-face.com/
#FOR FANS OF: Techno Death
This is by far the most interesting, noteworthy, original, innovative Carcass release I've ever heard. 'Necroticism...' was excellent, but this release is beyond excellent. Probably one of the most original melodic death metal albums I've ever heard. Those B-tuned guitars, Walker's vocal outputs, Owen's intense drumming and both Michael/Bill amazingly orchestrate on guitars. They came up with such thick riffs but amazingly melodic. Everything seems to fit here, absolutely everything. This album is underrated by people on here (MA), I don't think there's a more perfect melodic death release than this.

'Necroticism...' opened up avenues of success for the band the way 'Symphonies...' did for death/grind. And of course, 'Reek...' was at the almost beginning with grindcore as we knew it. Carcass and Napalm Death both. But here came 'Heartwork' with just impeccable originality and likability. Every song on 'Heartwork' to me is good. The leads are probably Michael at his best. They aren't as good with Arch Enemy than they are on this album. And when I say Arch Enemy, I mean all of their albums. Christopher Amott smokes his brother, but Michael is way about feel. You can hear him on the wah-pedal on here. It's so prevalent.

So it's great that the band is still active with the tragedy about Ken Owen who cannot play drums for the band because of his brain hemorrhage. It's a darn shame, but I think people can still appreciate his longtime work with the band. Bill kind of lost a little bit of his lead wicked style, but 'Surgical Steel' is still pretty amazing. 'Heartwork' came out when I was a junior in high school, and boy did I fire it up when I heard it. Those were some good times on the guitar, ABSOLUTELY. 'Heartwork' smoked most melodic metal bands in the 90's like At The Gates, In Flames, et al. They blew the scene out of control after this.

This will remain to be my favorite Carcass release every and a top melodic metal release ever. You can measure it up to 'Slaughter of the Soul' by At The Gates, 'The Jester Race' by In Flames, et al. I'm not sure who did the bulk of songwriting on this one, it would probably be mutual between Amott and Steer. They put everything together and made a milestone of a record. My favorite parts of the album are the guitars. But I like the vocals and drums too. The production quality is fantastic. I wouldn't trade the guys in from Earache for anyone. They are just all about band's successes. Own this, TODAY! (Death8699)

Insomnium - Anno 1696

#FOR FANS OF: Melo Death
Good release, I'm just having some animosity with the vocals, not so much the music. So instead of a top rating, I docked some points away because I didn't care for the voice on this album. It usually contains a barometer into my writing up on the band. Sure the intensity is there, I suppose it's an acquired taste as to how much I'd like to enjoy most of this. The screaming is all right, just sort of growing on me, I suppose. I do think that the music is critical here, and in retrospect I think it's definitely the driving force to this album. They sure are an intense band that bring about their all influences, be it At The Gates, or bands within the melodic death arena.

Solid recording. No complaints there really, and it seems like the more I hear of the vocals, I like them in small increments. The vocals and guitars I think are the segue into a solid release that this album is and therefore accepting the most good out of it, I must do!

Mixing was also good, and if you notice that they've signed with a major label (Century Media). That got them deep into some fame that they must take home and the band shall flourish in this genre. They are by no means as good as say Arch Enemy's old work but maybe that's a band that's more established since they've been around in the metal world since '96, Arch Enemy that is. These guys are not from Sweden though, they're from a Finnish act. They definitely got some good positive ratings on this one, and rightfully so! The music takes everything away. They kind of make me think of Children of Bodom as well, in the vein of Hatecrew Death Roll'.

Love the melodic guitar, and the leads are pretty decent! Overall, this album (for me) went from when I first heard it as a maybe 75 or 70 rating to 80. The experimenting was all there and the moods with the guitars are ever so wicked. They're not totally in your face melodic death. They're pretty experimental in sounds, and it fits the mood if you're heavy into melodic death like I am. Definitely one of the top releases in 2023.

If you have a way to get a song or two to take a listen to, I think it's the best idea as to see if they're going to be on your radar. Check them out, melodic death freaks, or just lovers of extreme metal! (Death8699)

Eternal Storm - A Giant Bound to Fall

#FOR FANS OF: Prog/Melo Death
Three years ago, I was lucky enough to review Eternal Storm’s debut effort entitled 'Come the Tide', a genre refreshing first album which impressed me a lot. Created in Madrid back in 2009, although the band relocated to Scotland some time ago, Eternal Storm needed a few years to release a full-length album, but the wait was worth of the time. Firmly rooted in the melodic death metal genre, the Spaniards reached a great balance between aggression, atmosphere, and tasteful melodies. For this reason, I was reasonably hyped with the fact that the band is set to release its sophomore album 'A Giant Bound to Fall' this February, with the always reliable label Transcending Obscurity Records.

Surpassing a great debut always puts some pressure on the band and this new album needed to be something especial, at least, to continue carving a position in the scene for Eternal Storm. I can safely say that this new opus won’t disappoint the fans, even though I consider that it requires time to properly judge if it is better or not. The first impression is that the band has pushed the boundaries of the mixture they created in 'Come the Tide'. Its melodic death metal tinged with atmospheric and pure aggressive parts is still there, with renewed enthusiasm I would say. I can feel some stronger progressive touches through the album. This is immediately noticed in the lengthy album opener "An Abyss of Unreason". The complex structures, the ups and downs in the intensity, the variety in the riffing work, plus the great combination of clean and aggressive vocals make this initial song an outstanding piece of music. "Last Refuge" is another highlight of the album, although it is quite complicated to choose the best tracks as the whole work is wonderful. I choose this one as its melodies and initial furious part make it remarkably catchy and a good candidate to be played in the concerts quite often. I would like to praise the top-notch work with the guitars, the riffs are excellent and melodies absolutely tasteful and captivating. This is what one can expect from a melodic death metal band, but Eternal Storm undoubtedly reaches a level of excellence in this aspect. Another key aspect is that the aforementioned complexity and progressive influences don’t deprive of soul and emotion to the music of this album. This is something I truly appreciate, as I always expected some emotional moments regardless of the work behind the songs the bands create. "Lone Tree Domain" is another superb track which I would like to highlight. The contrast between the heaviest parts and the most atmospheric ones is masterfully built, and it shows the amount of work the band has done creating this album. I love when bands go back from the calmest to the most furious ones with a progression that doesn’t lack of emotion and beauty, and this track is an absolutely fine example of it. Last but not least, the production of 'A Giant Bound to Fall' also deserves some praise, and it is absolutely well-done. It’s clean but not overproduced, and it sounds heavy and crushing when needed. The balance between the instruments and vocals is perfect and permits the listener to fully enjoy the music.

In conclusion, Eternal Storm’s third opus 'A Giant Bound to Fall' breaths grandeur in its entirety. Albums like this are the perfect example of how a stagnated genre like melodic death metal can find a path to sound fresh and exciting again. Well-done guys.(Alain González Artola)

Vale Of Tears - Oxymora I.

(Francesco Scarci)

Solar Dawn - Equinoctium

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

Meshuggah - ObZen

BACK IN TIME:
In Flames - The Jester Race

#FOR FANS OF: Melo Swedish Death
Vintage In Flames before the fall of them. I’d say that every one of theirs all up until Jesper left and 'Clayman' was the last good IF album in existence. I get that he struggled with Alcoholism and later participated on The Halo Effect with other great musicians on that album. 'The Jester Race' is probably the most profound IF album in existence. I’d say this one, 'Whoracle', 'Colony', and 'Clayman' were their strongest releases. But 'The Jester Race' is the most melodic and original release by the band that took precedence over all their albums.

The guitars took over here and flourished throughout the album. The production wasn’t the best but the release is from 1996. So that’s the reason it’s not 100%. But the music is. All of the songs on here are epic and defined melodic death metal possibly the best sounding melodic release of that era. The vocals are good as well. It’s totally different now that Jesper is out of the band and they changed their genre of music. That’s why long-time followers stopped liking them including me. It just is bland.

All of these songs have guitars at their best. If you try to disprove of them you’ll come up short. The melodies and vocals annihilate. It’s not a hardcore release, it’s mainly just a melodic release that’s dominated the metal community and will forever make history with this one. The rhythms and the leads lead the way to perfection. If you can’t hear that in the music, then you’ve got to be tone deaf. These songs paved the wave towards effective melodic death metal.

Every band has good and bad releases. But this band gave up when 'Siren Charms' was released. Their melodic/groove metal is pathetic. Jesper I think saw the direction the band was going and just opted out of the band. Why else why else would he leave? I don’t see him quitting metal especially playing with other melodic death musicians in The Halo Effect. He’ll always be remembered as a phenomenal musician in IF now transferred to The Halo Effect. But check this one because it’s epic! (Death8699)

Anomaly - On the Cursed Wings of Stolas

Amaran - A World Depraved

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

Foul Body Autopsy - Shadows Without Light - Pt.3

(Francesco Scarci)

Soilwork - A Predator's Portrait

#FOR FANS OF: Melo Death/Metalcore
This is an interesting album but it doesn't top its predecessor 'The Chainheart Machine'. The riffs are good but not to that caliber. And the vocals are a little more laid back mixed with some clean bits. The music is what's awesome on here. The melodic rhythms that go along with the clean vocals (at times). I liked this release, it is just a little step down from the previous. The leads were outstanding though. As this was the older lineup. These guys have had a great career in music some good releases and some duds. This one is definitely not the latter, it's quality melodic death metal. The intensity is there just not as much.

They mellowed out on this release but the vocals feature a lot of screaming. It's like a mix of melodic death with metalcore. I don't like metalcore much but the music is quality. I just don't like the fact that their intensity lessened hence the "75" rating.

Their modern sound is like this too, their most recent has a lot of mellow parts to them. 'Övergivenheten' which means "The Abandonment" is their latest release that sounds a bit like this. I like both almost equally. They'll never get to the degree of 'The Chainheart Machine' but they're still a good band releasing good music. They just fizzed out whereas they could've progressed musically. I'm still a fan of the band but I just had to lower my expectations of their releases after 'The Chainheart Machine'. There are some good songs on here mainly these: "Neurotic Rampage", "Final Fatal Force" and the title track.

They're dealing with the loss of David Andersson who joined the band in 2012-2022. He died last year at 47 years of age. They can still get to the caliber of this album as they did of their most recent. 'A Predator's Portrait' had some dynamite songs! They've just chilled out.

There will never be a Soilwork of this degree again, but that doesn't mean that they're done as a band. This album is a good follow-up, just not nearly as good as their predecessor. I hope that they keep producing albums though! (Death8699)

Burned In Effigy - Rex Mortem

#FOR FANS OF: Melo Death
What a fantastic release musically! These guys might've changed their genre(s), but they're still belting out some magnificent music! The riffs are amazingly technical and the vocals compliment the music wholeheartedly. The album is pretty brutal and melodic at the same time! Their melodies and intensity are all there. These guys know what the heck they're doing in the songwriting aspect. They totally slay. I'm surprised not a lot of people have heard about this band. They're totally technical and full of intensity. The whole album is like this. Some melodies sound like early Arch Enemy. But not duplicated, just a resemblance.

This whole album deserves praise from listeners. They're really fast in the picking department (guitars) and heavy rhythms. Definitely one fine album that was released last year! I hope that their CD will be out and available, I have yet to find it but I will!

There's a trade-off with the vocals, some screaming and some deep throat. It accompanies the music quite well. I'm rating this as an "79" because there are so many good things about this album. The music is tops with me!

I liked the production quality the music went fantastic alongside everything else. The riffs are so catchy and noteworthy! That's my favorite aspect of the album. But I dug the vocals as well and the drums go well alongside the insane music. These guys do great keeping up their pace. It's amazingly crafted. There are some clean guitars, but not a lot. They're melodic as all hell on here. They deserve credit for making a release that's as dynamite as this one is! The guitars are the most catchy and admirable than anything else on here. Everything fit into place on here and let's hope that they have quite a career here in metal! (Death8699)

Decrepit Birth - Polarity

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Death
Very first hearing this band and what a monument! I love the technical aspect that they put into this album. It's totally surreal. Every track on here is good. I'm sure Archspire derived some influence from this band in terms of harmonies and overall musicianship. The riffs really speak to the listener and the vocals are just brutal. But not over-the-top brutal. It suited the direction they were taking to this release. I was blown away by the music on here. They really played from the heart with these songs. It isn't just one or two songs ok and that's it. This whole album is phenomenal. The music is what just took it away with me. These guys knew what they were doing with the recording. Such an amazing record and it seems as though they're still active, but on hiatus unfortunately.

From what's speaking to me are the guitar riffs. They put a lot of technicality into the mix, but the riffs are way melodic. That's what grabs me on here. There actually is an ever changing heavy rhythm guitar. What does it for me are the melodies and harmonies, as previously stated.

There aren't a great deal of technical death metal bands that I'm really into. Now I can say I'm a fan of this band after hearing 'Polarity'. They seem to put their heart and soul into the music. For an extreme band, they're not brutal for the sake of being brutal. I think that they put a lot of thought into their songwriting which is crucial to this genre.

Always positive things to say about this release. I thought that they covered all aspects of metal here with the vocals, guitars, and drums. The production was solid as well. There seemed to be some triggered drums though, they were just on hyperpaced mode. Everything fit together on here no complaints really. These guys know how to make good extreme music! I wish I didn't wait so long to check out this band. I figured that I hadn't heard much about them really until yesterday. What a great album! Don't wait around on this, it's worth looking into immediately if you haven't already! (Death8699)

Soilwork - Overgivenheten

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Metalcore
This one helluv a catchy album. I'd say one of their best releases since 'A Predator's Portrait. The guitars are simply amazing and the vocals fluctuate sometimes screaming sometimes singing clean. This reminded me a little of metalcore bands but they've got their own sound to them. Sad about losing their guitarist David Andersson. It's tragic as he was only 47. But being his last effort with the band, I thought the riffs were just amazing. Such feel to their album and variety. Between clean vocals, melodic guitar riffs and a solid sound quality in their overall production. What a monument of an album!

There were a lot of clean tone segments but the guitars that were heavy drowned them out. But yeah, those segments of clean work show so much essence to their souls. It's not a super long release but it's so quality in their musicianship.

I've been following Soilwork since 'The Chainheart Machine' came out I believe in 1998. I've always admired their music and songwriting capabilities. They were always tops with me. And this album does the band justice wholeheartedly. I liked this whole release and it shows the emotional state of the band. Mainly the songwriters they were totally innovative and strong. These guys have been making good music since the late 90's. I always liked their melodic death metal genre. Though, nowadays they're more melodic death mix with a little metalcore. It's still likeable material, don't get me wrong, they're just not as heavy as in the early Soilwork days.

These guys still have a great deal to offer despite losing David last year. He was with the band for about 10 years. A lot of his work was with the final release with this one. He was so talented. And that totally shows on this release. Old Soilwork is gone, but the new is still going strong with their melodic music and amazing musicianship! (Death8699)
