Borknagar - Fall

#FOR FANS OF: Epic Black/Viking
What a transitory epic platter that's filled with the utmost soul-driven heart. I'm not a big fan of bands like Amon Amarth or other Viking metal bands, but Borknagar is one of the ones that I'm totally into their vibe. They're totally chill and hold an illicit like vibe. These guys over the years have kept it mild. Not their first releases, but some that I've come across have been mellow. The more releases they put out, the more they mellow out. It doesn't make them totally like eunuchs, it just means they're getting older and more musical. They have made a turn for their best in precepts with their latest sound, which is the greatest they've put out.

The guitars go mainly in a slow pace with some variation and melodic as all heck, do they swarm. The music is the best part of the release, alongside the vocals. They're in unison of the music wholeheartedly. What melodies and an overall beautiful all be that will never 'Fall.'

Every song on here is full of passion in the music! The vocals sway from hoarse to clean and back again. It's killer if there's an exact moment to highlight the whole release is a highlight! The guitars seem to go well with the songs/album/riff by riff. I've been a fan since I got 'Winter Thrice.' I just like their overall sound to their songs. This stuff isn't appeasing the brutal metal people, just those of whom are more into bands like Katatonia, et al. They're way mild and intricate in that sense. Just getting milder and milder they seem with each passing bar. To that realm, they appease the masses of listeners to Viking mild sense of direction that they have become.

These guys have been around for some time now, belting out their melodic metal till way back in the 1990's. I think they've moved on with careful progression and sticking to their Viking metal roots! This is one you don't want to pass up on! So many great songs! (Death8699)

Nunslaughter - Angelic Dread

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Thrash
Killer death metal, though the songs are short. I didn't mind that, they reined with fury! Catchy riffs and tolerable vocals, there's no going wrong with this band! The vocals go well with the music! Best Nunslaughter I've heard from them. Excruciatingly immense death metal galore! Check out one of their lengthier songs called "Looking Into The Abyss."

The music is thrash/death metal, more thrash in the guitars and a tinge of death metal with the vocals. But I know they're considered to be solely a death metal band. The vocals reflect Jeff Walker via Carcass. Same screaming sound if you didn't notice, but it seems to be true to that!

Riffs sound crunchy and catchy. There isn't a Nunslaughter album I've heard that tops this one. And it's good they're re-establishing a great fan base. They need it and their music is unique.

The production quality on here is superb! I enjoyed how they weaved everything into place in terms of instruments/voice. The aggression is totally there, and wouldn't want to change anything on this release. They diversify, they're not aggression totally, but the guitars are HEAVY! I think that they down-tune the guitars to reach that thickness sound. What a great band, they're wholly underrated! I ordered their CD from Hells Headbangers because I thought it one album that I couldn't pass up! The music took over and I loved the vocal department. This band is way unique and uncompromising! Be sure to take a listen to the song I mentioned and see if it's up to your death metal pallet! (Death8699)

Naglfar - Cerecloth

#FOR FANS OF: Swedish Black, Dissection
This release is a re-visitation of the "old" Naglfar via the 'Vittra' release with a little fine-tuning. The guitars are similar like in the past tremolo picking and a slight reverb upon the production the vocals are similar as well just darker I'd say. They're screaming vox but darker and dreary. It sets the tone on how the album is going to be like, especially on the production quality.

I don't agree that this album averages a moderate "65" rating I believe that it's top-notch. It stole me right away, and I liked it immediately. Especially the doom if there entails. There really aren't an overabundance of lead guitar work, just some. It weaved into the tremolo picking of the rhythm guitar.

They really did well on here, I mean so eerie and desolate are the guitar riffs with vocals accompanying the riffs making it so depressing. They really upped their game in the melancholic department, as most of their work has done. I'd say it's more morbid than 'Harvest.' The melodies flow in the depths of hell.

If you key into the production/mixing/sound departments, you'll hear that they wanted this to sound ultimately grueling.

I'm not much into the lyrical conceptions, I just care about the vocals and the music. I feel they're at a really strong point and that they are at the pinnacle of their melodic black metal. They are pretty much experts on how to make such good recordings in this genre, and I feel that they were undercut on the ratings. They really are sending home a message that they're not letting up in their intensity. And the tremolo picking is superb. There's a lot of it on here, not too many bouts of slower tempos, most of it is fast, I'm a huge fan of this band and rightfully so because they keep putting out songs/albums that grasp the listener with their immense intensity. Don't pass this one up!

The eerie sense of this release is all there, and they definitely upped their underground vibe that you can feel totally throughout! Check it out and see! (Death8699)

Sathanas - Psalm Satani

#FOR FANS OF: Black/Death
Only 30 minutes in length, but I feel like these guys put on some pretty great blackened metal. I love the vocals and the guitars. Paul indicated that the recording quality wasn't the greatest, but you can as sure as hell make out the riffs. No blast beats just underground metal galore.

Production wise, this album could've done better, but the guitars and the vocals made up for that! I like the fact that Paul's vocals are screams that fit well with the essence of this album. I really like this album, especially the riffs. Too bad, it's only a little over 30 minutes. It deserves a lengthier LP. But, nevertheless, it's better than quality music for this rare genre. It's really made metal to sound better than just unique. It's made it more experimental and creative. Each song is good to my standards. They put an effort into everything, especially in making this album flourish, even though there's a claim that they got somewhat screwed over by the label. But the next LP will be at Morrisound. So that's pretty exciting!

The music on here was in the vein of 'Necrohymns' but it has its own kick to it. Definitely looking forward to the new album, but for now it's this blaring through my speakers. It's a raw recording, again reminiscent of the past. Paul is the main contributor of the band as he's the driving force.

This band has their own sound, especially the blackened metal that they play. They have sort of weaved it into their own. I like how they display their talent throughout this recording and past recordings as well! The music on here is filled with progressive riffing and a unique style.

I've yet to find a way to get a physical copy of this album, preferably on Amazon or Hells Headbangers. But they're not stocking it. Best to download off bandcamp. Check this album out! It shan't disappoint! (Death8699)

Disinter - Designed By The Devil, Powered By The Dead

http://www.secret-face.com/
#FOR FANS OF: Grind/Death
These guys formed quite a bit ago, Native Chicagoans! I'm quite surprised that no one took a shot and reviewed this. The vocals sound like Adam via Cardiac Arrest (US). And the music is quite unique and technical as well. They hit home with me, I've found this platter to rip musically and aggressively. It's too bad that they dealt with a death in the band (Preston) RIP 2017. I've found nothing but good things to say about this band/album. It's just a little hard to find online. It isn't readily available on Amazon.com and there are different bands with changed names (Disinter). I can't fathom that it's been 10 years since this album was released!

Keeping the metal faith there on Disinter's end, they rip quick musically, and they're (I believe) five members making this release happen. I just so don't like to listen digitally without giving the band money to buy a CD. I would love to have this album as a part of my collection!

These guys are not only death metal, but their talent goes to show that it does still exist, and we hear here that talent belting out fast riffs mixed with upbeat but still underground vocals alongside burgeoning music that utterly is in command. There's so much going on with the vocals, music, and rhythm guitar sounds that perpetrate along with its unfathomably dark intricate metal. You can hear how much they unleash their musical display. Very talented musicians!

They have intricate groove and tenacious licks that simply catch you off guard. But yeah, the vocalist sounds like Adam Scott from Cardiac Arrest (US). If you've heard any of their music, you'll hear what I'm talking about. The other side of the vocals deals with screaming. The music is their own. I'm glad to be aware that metal is alive and well in Chicago. These guys rip it to pieces on the guitars, the production sound, varying vocals and undying spirit. They've owned Chicago since their birth in 1991. This band is the embodiment of terror, destruction, and songwriting.

I only took a little bit off because there were some slow parts but wholeheartedly uncompromising and intricate abomination! (Death8699)

Cannibal Corpse - Chaos Horrific

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Death
This album is a step-up from 'Violence Unimagined.' They seem to have more solid riffs, as Cannibal has taken another 5-piece band with one of the top releases for 2023 in my view. They deserved it! Everything seemed to be right on here, with no ounce of anything mediocre.

I think Rutan made more of a difference on here as well. He and Rob make a good combination on guitars. More wicked leads and rhythms on here! The songs are way tighter and this is my favorite release from Corpsegrinder ever since he started with the band replacing Chris Barnes. He's got way more range than Barnes ever had for Cannibal Corpse. The great thing about this release as well is that it's got a lot of variations with the songs. Even though they were more in B-flat tuning to get that chunky sound, it sounds great. All the tracks were good! I listened to the sample before I downloaded this and then bought the CD. I'm so glad I did!

This is one of the top 3 Cannibal albums I'd choose in their entire discography. The others would be 'Red Before Black', 'Torture' and 'Butchered At Birth.' This new one is going to get plenty of air time for me, especially sharing this information to readers to assure them that this is the band's monument ever since some of their previous work that is worth mentioning.

The mixing was top-notch to feature the guitars well in synch with the vocals. The only thing that I didn't hear a lot were Corpsegrinder's screams, they're mainly guttural. However, it suited the music!

If you want to know one top album from 2023 this LP hits the pinnacle for the band! Everything on here is killer! The production quality especially since they've been on Metal Blade is great. I don't see any signs of them slowing down! Loving this whole release! (Death8699)

Deceased - Ghostly White

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Thrash
The last album with Dave "Scarface" Castillo, who drowned in El Salvador in 2018. It's too bad, this band has been in great progression with each upcoming release. I just happened to get a copy of this CD and 'Surreal Overdose.' This one isn't extreme death metal, it's milder with great riffs. The vocals are powerful and the production quality was solid. I think highly of this release! I feel like they have some riffs that are unique and exceptionally original. The vocals on here are hoarse and have a low-end growl to them. The music is non-duplicated by any of their others. They pretty sound different with each succeeding platter. The voice goes pretty well with the music.

The thing about the music is that they have tempos slow, medium, and up-to-fast shred. The leads were well done, and I feel like they really put their heart and soul into this recording. The music and vocals are what stole it for me. That's the reason for the "75" rating.

I only own two releases by this band, 'Ghostly White' and their previous 'Surreal Overdose.' I like both, but the former more so because I feel that the music is better on here than their predecessor. It's filled with catchiness and thickness in the riff category. I originally didn't think very highly of these albums, but my outlook has changed after multiple hearings. The vocals just go along-side the musical kingdom of originality in the sounds. Too bad about their drummer. And I'm curious to hear their latest release out this year, entitled 'Children of the Morgue.' This new one might even be better than this one, I'm not sure yet. We'll have to play the waiting game.

Five members in this band, one gone, but it doesn't take away from the magic of this release. I think that the music and vocals are what caught my attention the most. These guys have been going strong for years making quality death/thrash/heavy metal. Quite a mix of genres!

I like how they were able to piece things together in these genres, which is why they caught me a little by surprise. The music (being a guitar player myself) was the highlight to me. But they were able to lump those genres together, making it a win-win situation and never boring.

I like this band a lot and am going to be a long time fan because they were able to make their music unique and listenable. The vocals, the riffs, the leads, and the drums all were exquisitely composed. These guys are hopefully going to be around for many more years! If you don't believe me, just take a listen yourself and see what I'm talking about! (Death8699)

Everdying - Dimensions of Mortal Frailty

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Black
What a killer release by Johnny Dove's one-man-band, featuring some guest musicians as well! This album is balls out intensity fury with the screaming vocals that transition to death metal bellows. This LP I ended up getting because I checked it out first, and it definitely was appealing. Not too many releases in their discography... but the albums that have been released seemed to make par. I think the guitars are a bit complex, distortion everywhere, though some clean guitar was featured briefly on a few tracks. Hard to play favorites song-wise, I thought what a valiant effort coming out of Johnny's intricate influences that reflect his melodic death/black metal genres from Chicago!

This whole album was interesting, what's come out sounding like such aggression with that key In Flames sort of power from say 'The Jester Race' and weaved into his own making. I like the vocal trade-offs on songs. Definitely makes it a more killer output.

The mixing was decent even though it was an independent label. For the first few listens, it was muddy to me until I listened more closely to everything this computer was able to play, even though it was Spotify that I played it on and CD that I purchased on Johnny's bandcamp page.

I like how there are some tracks which reflect that absolute distinction from melodic death to black metal. I don't have the lyrics, so I've not connected to this album on that level, just the overall vibe from it. This guy spent a lot of time constructing, a lot of what he brought to the plate on here. It's taken a lot of time to get this follow-up from their previous release, 'Within the Recesses.' More than six years have passed since that one was out. Not much feedback about it, I'm guessing it's similar in influences. But I like then fact that he weaves the influences into his own. Definitely worth checking out, definitely show support for the scene and Johnny as a thriving musician that has a wealth of creativity.

To keep the scene active and supporting this band is something to do because he's amassed a monument here. You won't regret it!  (Death8699)

Obituary - Live Infection

#FOR FANS OF: Death Old School
I was wondering why James on guitar sounded the way he did and to conclude that wonder it's because Kenny Andrews was on lead. He had the effects down pretty good, but the technicality was waning. James was/is the master shredder either in Death, Disincarnate, Obituary and Testament. His quirky behavior was because like Chuck from Death, he had a brain tumor, but he recovered where for Chuck it was his demise. This 'Live Infection' album is about an hour long (CD version) and I still like it even though it's less technical than the original 'Cause of Death' release. And the change was because it wasn't James on lead (to me, at least), so it wasn't as listener friendly to Obituary fans.

Don't misunderstand me, this is a great CD, but the production quality was less than optimal. Four original members on this release, featuring Donald Tardy (drums), Trever Peres (rhythm guitar), Terry Butler (bass), and John Tardy (vocals).

I think that this release was optimal, but it could've been a lot better. Live albums are not as good as studio albums, with exceptions. Destruction's "Live Without Sense" as an exception, but that was a thrash metal compilation that supposedly "live."

This live album didn't get much feedback from listeners (only 1). When I first heard it, it was bringing me back to the 'Cause of Death' era, just not as good. But they still did a good job with their instruments. I just wish James was on lead. I always liked his creativity with the effects he uses and that vibe that comes out of his guitar. Kenny's OK, he plays on the modern Obituary albums, including 'Dying of Everything.' Obituary has always held this old school death metal sound. It's never really changed. That's what keeps the band "bad ass." And 'Live Infection' I still give them a "70" rating for. Mostly because of the sound of the instruments and aggression.

I really wasn't sure what to expect from this album since it wasn't 'Cause of Death' solely, it was Kenny Andrews that took over James Murphy's leads. There were bonus tracks, too, that made it into the killer sound that was a result.

The vocals, music and vibe of this album is the 'Cause of Death' sounding songs which makes it very listenable and brutal. They never changed their style of music, that was makes or breaks a band. I still felt that this was a "70" rating and will stick by that. Take a listen to this one! (Death8699)

Exhorder - Defectum Omnium

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash Metal
This release has quite a bit of peaks and valleys, to me though, there are some peaks just not enough to earn it a top rating. A lot of Pantera-esque riffs...they seem to use the same tuning as Dimebag (I think drop 60). But Pat O'brien does a good job in his solos and his rhythms. Just not enough "great" licks, but enough to earn it an "80" rating. I don't really have much history with this band, though their 2019 release collectively earned a top score. It's made me want to purchase more of their releases even though I don't multitudinously highly believe in this release, mainly because the music itself wasn't enough to gain its favor in my estimation. If the rhythms were as strong as the leads, I would diametrically oppose this belief that they should earn a higher rating.

The vocals are decent, and they vary between yelling to some clean. It compliments the music well. Pat plays the guitar on pretty much all tracks, with (I believe) some guest musicians as well. I think I'm right in saying so. There are some songs that incorporate the vocals with reverb or an echo sound.

Aside from placating the Pantera-esque style on some tracks or licks, this whole album altogether is a great effort collectively. Pat sure hopefully recovered from being axed from Cannibal Corpse due-to run ins in the law and his drug addiction. I believe he was caught last year playing live for Exhorder to replace their existing guitar player. He's made a tremendous effort to be welcomed back into the metal community, even though this band is quite different in their metal genre than they are from Cannibal Corpse. Let's just hope he sticks with the band and continues on his journey with them in the metal world. These guys have a somewhat great mass of riffs that stand out altogether.

What keeps this CD going is the energy to each track and the electric moments of the guitars going alongside the vocals. I enjoyed this album, I thought it was a great effort by the band. They have a history, but not a long history, of LP's in their discography. Let's hope they last a lot longer! (Death8699)

Skeletal Remains - Fragments of the Ageless

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Death Metal
Heavily DEATH and OBITUARY influence like the previous recordings ('Devouring Mortality' & 'The Entombment of Chaos'), they have more of their own sound to them on this release. The vocals are a little bit different too, less echo and reverb, just a grueling sound. The last two releases have been solid, and this one is definitely another "winner" so to speak. The leads are chaotic, the rhythms are chunk filled, and the recording quality is top-notch. These guys put together one creative platter for us death metal fans to incorporate it. Take the last two releases, put them combined into two, and then you have this one ultimately creative. Also features a Hate Eternal cover song entitled "Messiah of Rage."

This release is pretty fast metal all in all and it's tight. This one is definitely a "screamer." They seemed to be on the cutting edge and more mature than the previous two releases. This one is another 45 minutes in length and by no means is it "boring." High energy and great riffs.

I'm not one into lyrics in metal, just as long as the music is good, and the production quality is awesome, then I'm totally locked in. Anyway, the whole bulk of this album is interesting when you pick apart the riffs. Very good musicianship all the way through!

I like the crunch tone guitar sound. And the leads are highly technical and a tad bit of reverb/delay on those navigating through the fretboard. The ultimate quality in sound, and the drums sound great. I dug this whole album, it was an entire masterpiece. Nothing to take away or add to it, the whole album is superb. I caught onto the fact that this album is utterly brutal. They really seem not only to be maturing, but also taking death metal to new heights. I would say that they're constantly maturing. They're taking it a step more brutal each succeeding release. And the guitars are done with ultimate precision! These native Californians sure as hell upped the brutality and are coming into their own, especially on here! (Death8699)

Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Techno Death
Canadian giants unleash another top-notch death metal release that's a little bit slower than their competing band Cryptopsy though Tomb Mold is a lot slower in their tempos but still ranked as death metal. These guys are more on the brutal end of the genre. Brutal vocals and guitar work. All is sounding original in their riffs and some of the songs contain clean portions, especially the outro song. It's rather good, however.

The sound quality is good as well. Good mixing and production. Those breaks between the heavy guitar sound is refreshing. So it isn't "brutal" the entire way through, but rather their mixing heavy guitar licks with clean portions. There are some melodic parts too as well as some guitars which are fast and ferocious, the few that there are. This band seems to cover a lot of different portions of metal, but they still hold the death metal label. So that's good! They keep it ever-changing and eye-opening through your cranium.

This is one of a better release of 2023 that has them on the top of the charts, despite the "C" average I'm seeing on here. My rank is above for them. And like the tempos, even though it's somewhat odd to have a death metal band that uses quite a bit of clean guitar. Reminds me a little of the older Opeth, but not exactly. The hoarse vocals to the clean guitars keeps them into a realm of their own. No clean vocals here, deep throat here and guitars that are mostly death metal. And leads that well accompany the music. Quite technical, but pretty well flawless!

I would venture to say that this is a release that's got a variety of good licks in it and brutal vocals. I like the diversity, makes it more interesting and fluctuating. They don't mess around, as with their style, they keep you guessing as for what's going to happen next! Own it! (Death8699)

Insomnium - Anno 1696

#FOR FANS OF: Melo Death
Good release, I'm just having some animosity with the vocals, not so much the music. So instead of a top rating, I docked some points away because I didn't care for the voice on this album. It usually contains a barometer into my writing up on the band. Sure the intensity is there, I suppose it's an acquired taste as to how much I'd like to enjoy most of this. The screaming is all right, just sort of growing on me, I suppose. I do think that the music is critical here, and in retrospect I think it's definitely the driving force to this album. They sure are an intense band that bring about their all influences, be it At The Gates, or bands within the melodic death arena.

Solid recording. No complaints there really, and it seems like the more I hear of the vocals, I like them in small increments. The vocals and guitars I think are the segue into a solid release that this album is and therefore accepting the most good out of it, I must do!

Mixing was also good, and if you notice that they've signed with a major label (Century Media). That got them deep into some fame that they must take home and the band shall flourish in this genre. They are by no means as good as say Arch Enemy's old work but maybe that's a band that's more established since they've been around in the metal world since '96, Arch Enemy that is. These guys are not from Sweden though, they're from a Finnish act. They definitely got some good positive ratings on this one, and rightfully so! The music takes everything away. They kind of make me think of Children of Bodom as well, in the vein of Hatecrew Death Roll'.

Love the melodic guitar, and the leads are pretty decent! Overall, this album (for me) went from when I first heard it as a maybe 75 or 70 rating to 80. The experimenting was all there and the moods with the guitars are ever so wicked. They're not totally in your face melodic death. They're pretty experimental in sounds, and it fits the mood if you're heavy into melodic death like I am. Definitely one of the top releases in 2023.

If you have a way to get a song or two to take a listen to, I think it's the best idea as to see if they're going to be on your radar. Check them out, melodic death freaks, or just lovers of extreme metal! (Death8699)

Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite

#FOR FANS OF: Progressive Death Metal
Loud, blasphemous, and never letting up, Cattle Decapitation's 'Terrasite' is in my opinion one of the best metal releases of last year. Let me explain. The vocals take on one aspect of the album, one screaming and one hoarse throat. The music, the drums, and the production quality is immaculate. You find the vocals always fluctuating, the music brutal, and this whole release from start to finish is never-ending death metal. The only thing that took me a little bit of time accepting were the screaming voice. But I like how they take it back and forth. The tempos are ever-changing, the intense drums and the original sounding guitar riffs are enticingly invigorating.

This is the first album that I've heard from the band, and they have quite a discography. I couldn't pick a better way to find them being listed in MetalInjection.net's best of 2023. I felt that way as previously mentioned. And well, actually this release has vocals in three different types: screaming, hoarse, and clean. Hence, the progressive death metal diagnoses. They cover it all in almost an hour in length.

For most of this release, it is intense. The closing song entitled "Just Another Body" is where the progressive sound in the vocals/music takes on. Most of this album does fluctuate. But most of it in retrospect is death metal. I mean fast and ferocious death metal.

The intro gets you pumped in what you're about to hear: ferocious riffs/music. I mean, ear-piercing. Every part of this album is filled with intensity, and where they want to slow it up in the outro song is fine because most of it never lets up. The lead guitar, rhythm, and every aspect of vocals that you can imagine is well received. But get ready for some extreme intensity. One of my outstanding monuments, you can imagine. Coming from death metal, turning into progressive death metal. But most of this release is blistering and uncompromising. These guys do well on the songwriting aspect. What an original and talented act of whom knows how to blare in your eardrums with this unimaginable and ferocious extreme metal! (Death8699)

Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg For Death

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Death
Immaculate release, better than 'Wrong One To Fuck With', their previous release. What an onslaught of brutal death metal! The vocals seem to be the same as their predecessor, but the riffs are a lot better this time around. These guys know what they're doing, a heavier yet technical release yet again. But it seems like they put more time in writing this one. Some people shy away from this band for whatever reason, but in my opinion, if you like death metal, this one is no one to fuck with! The technicality is there, but the rhythms are tight, making this release even more intriguing than the previous album. They just are a notch up from that one, and you'll hear it if you compare the previous to this one.

They take off from their predecessor, only the songwriting (to me) is better. The riffs stick out the most and (of course) the burly vocals. They fluctuate and there are two members that are trader off in this department. I feel like there's more emphasis on the music rather than the vocals.

I would classify them to be not only brutal death/grindcore but also technical death metal, which makes them very diverse. I liked this one from start to finish. And I'm showing support for the band by purchasing the CD. The vocals go well with the music because you have that heavy-duty sound of the axe and burly voice along with it. It's uncompromising death metal mostly, despite what I said previous and just to generalize. The guitars are immaculate. This album is intense the whole way through it, and they even put in some melodic guitar riffs alongside the brutal intent. There's really nothing that I would change here, even the production quality was quite good!

Lead guitars were good as well! But mostly, I like the rhythms with the vocals. It's quite immaculate on how they chose to proceed in this recording. All the songs are good, you can just take a listen if you attempt to dispute me over this. Amazing metal quality from start to finish! (Death8699)

Katatonia - Sky Devoid of Stars

#FOR FANS OF: Alternative Metal
Well, this metal is more on the alternative side of that genre, very eclectic! I liked this whole album, there were really no peaks and valleys in it, it was solid the whole way through. I didn't play favorites with any of the songs, either. They were all good, the 11 tracks featured a bonus song. I kind of didn't want this to end, it was so mesmerizing. It's anything but aggressive though the roots are still in that genre, I wouldn't call this alternative rock really like see more modern Anathema. This band is Swedish based and a lot of excellent albums are from that country, especially melodic bands. That would be At The Gates, Dismember, et al though those are really heavier bands. Dark Tranquillity and Arch Enemy are other metal bands that are melodic too!

The recording quality was quite good. The instruments were well mixed too, and I'd have to say that it's a more romantic sort of recording, featuring more clean vocals throughout. That's what made this album so appealing if you're not expecting anything heavy. It's just not there on here!

I kind of didn't want this album to end! But it met the mark in my top albums for 2023. It would be the one that I've held most in high esteem for that genre, and others that are a bit heavier would be Fires In The Distance. They're melodic too but a little bit heavier. And good news that yet another Dark Tranquillity album is coming out soon they've just finished with that recording so my sources say! It's a year that has done well with metal in 2023. This year, in terms of melodic bands, Everdying is another melodic band that's heavier though and much more aggressive than Katatonia. Anyway, all the songs on this Katatonia release are favorites. I can't site one that's better than another. They all have a special place in their discography.

Not to digress like I did previously, this is something that's so esoteric and surreal! They're not balls out intensity, it's wholly melodic with so many intriguing instruments in the mix that are essentially clean. Basically, they have light-to-metal guitars and keys that play well with the vocals.

I think this is my favorite release from the band. It's so consistent, just don't expect it to be balls out heavy the element here is "feel" opposed to aggression. These guys take melodicism to the next level with genius syndrome effects and essence, as I'll revisit my previous state. Check it out! (Death8699)

Satanic Warmaster - Aamongandr

#FOR FANS OF: Black/Death
I'm surprised that this album didn't get much playtime for listeners or fans of pure black metal. It's one of my favorite releases from 2022. This LP is about 40 minutes in six songs. Ultra powered metal that stays uncompromising! It doesn't really let up in intensity. Full-blown metal.

I like the fact that the vocals don't change throughout, and the music plays some great melodies. The raw production makes it loud and uncompromising. These guys mean business, and I love the way the music goes with the vocals. The songs are pretty fast with some keys in the background making it sound more evil than ever. They really make a statement with their blistering music. It's quite an amazing release. The melodies are top-notch, and every song deserves praise! The blast beating leaves a hole in your cranium, and the keys make it sound even more drastically underground. I made sure that I'd buy the CD from Hells Headbangers.

There's nothing that's really poor to say about this album, it shines the whole way through. It's totally evil and brutal. The production seems as though it was such that it was so raw in sound, and the mixing was also top-notch. I really love this release, it has so many great elements to it.

I don't need to know what they're saying lyrically, that I'll leave with the band/album. From a musical perspective, these guys know exactly how to make a black metal album that is totally underground. It's worth checking out and given a chance to get a lot of spins! (Death8699)

Suffocation - Hymns From The Apocrypha

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Techno Death
This album has elements to it that make it pretty epic, though it's undoubtedly not like their catchiness of their earlier work. The intensity is still there though and the technicality of it all though the leads were somewhat sloppy. The intensity is high throughout, even the slower tempos, they are BRUTAL.

The vocals and music keep this release pretty underground. I'd have to say that they earned a "75" rating from me. I like what I'm hearing throughout this release. They're surely not compromising, and that hasn't really changed. Upped into the realm of say Dying Fetus in that aspect, the technicality, the double bass kicks, the wicked guitar work, these guys did well here. I cannot make this into a lower rating because it's molded into me in a great release. I still need to order this album because I only have it streaming, and I want to show support to the band. These guys have had an over 30-year career in death metal history in some of the most influential work!

There's no backing out of saying they aren't witnessing back from their roots on this one. That would be false, a definite false statement. This album is in your face brutality and catchy guitars, brutal vocals and a sound production. I really liken this release!

I had to order this, it would be stupid of me to do otherwise and not factor this in to the CD list I may have for top releases of 2023. These guys just tear it up from every different angle! The vocals go really well with the music, they're left unchanging. No screaming really, just low bellowing vox and the guitars that's riffs go hand in hand with the music. The leads are pretty well executed as well! But they're in no way better than the music itself. They just annihilate your speakers!

If you desire to hear some fresh Suffocation in the vein of the old era, tune in to this because it's where it's at! Balls out intensity! Get it, today! (Death8699)

Napalm Death - Time Waits For No Slave

#FOR FANS OF: Grind
It's sad to say that the grindcore days are over. But at least Napalm Death is still making music, even though it's totally different from what they began as. 'Time Waits For No Slave' is a good illustration where they're coming to two genres, death metal and some grind. It's odd because I was so used to the Mick Harris blast beats from the six years that he was with the band. But Danny is an OK replacement. This album is heavy, but the tempo changes are evident and totally there, but the blasting is limited. The production quality is a little raw, but OK. I liked the whole album. I thought that, at least for death metal fans, this is a good one.

The guitars aren't riffing too fast. That intensity is gone, but at least the music sounds good. It's a shame that they lost Jesse. I think he was a big influence on the band, being that he was with Terrorizer in the early days. I guess when Mick left the band, that was the end of the real extreme days. I felt that he was the best grindcore drum in existence. Danny is good, especially on here. It seems as though he's matured behind the set and is more comfortable being alongside this band. It's amazing that they've been around since 1981. I was 5 when they formed! Anyway, it's difficult to pinpoint specific highlights on here, just that some tracks are fast then they completely chill out.

I like the variety on this release, it can get really intense. Their newer stuff is LOUD. Meaning their latest release. This album is one of their longer releases, it clocks in at about 50+ minutes. It's worth listening to, but it just takes some getting used to. If you're expecting Napalm Death of the old, it's sad, but they're not really doing it. This release I'd say in the death metal genre is solid. I actually decided to order the CD. I know that this album is outdated, and they're working on new material. I just thought that I'd write about it anyway. Even if it is an older Napalm Death release.

Saying farewell to Jesse and the departed members of the earlier Napalm. It's a good line-up still, and there literally are no leads on this album. It's just all rhythms, which is why I like the album. Jesse was more solid in the lead department, but Mitch has constructed some pretty good riffs. They're diverse and that's what makes the album interesting to listen to. I know earlier it sounded as though I wanted old ND back, but that just isn't going to happen. What they evolved to is something totally different. A lot of their albums post-Mick are strictly death metal, except 'Utopia Banished'. But that one wasn't very good in my opinion. (Death8699)
