Midnight - Hellish Expectations

#FOR FANS OF: Black/Speed/Thrash
This is definitely better than their predecessor 'Let There Be Butchery.' This one is just a bit shorter of an album, but they accomplished a lot! I saw them with Mayhem, and they put on one hell of a show, only they're missing a rhythm guitar player. The vocals fit well with the music. The music is sort of like punk based, and the vocals are pretty unique! I liked this whole release, all 25 minutes of this. Just wish it was longer. But it still packs a punch to it. The leads are a little sloppy, but the vocals and production quality is top-notch. These guys mix black metal with speed metal. Quite a unique pair of genres to go together, but they turn it off well.

25 minutes of brain wrenching metal into your eardrums, these guys don't mess around. Not much into their lyrical topics, but it is what it is. Just as long as the music is, quality is what matters to me. They've got a pretty big fan base, being from Ohio.

Their metal sound wreaks havoc on the eardrums, they're here to stay. All the songs rip and average about 2:50 minutes in length. But the intricate sound that they own themselves. Every song on here is good, the music and the vocals and sound quality rips 'Let There Be Butchery.' They're getting more creative and intriguing to listen to!

Athenar should not be doing everything on this release. Even if it's just a session musician, that would be OK. He's got to remember that they do tour, so he needs band members to accompany him to this metal, this metal event of onslaught! There are bands like Old Man's Child and Everydying that are in charge with everything. That (to me) gets a lot of ghosting with other musicians. I'm sure that they would want to be a part of this band, especially since he's built up a great fan base humbly. It may be because he's weary of them taking over what he wants for the band, and with a one-man piece, he's a part of everything. I'm not sure, but I do know that he's an outstanding musician, though maybe difficult to work with.

In any event, grab a hold of this, it's one of the best releases of March 2024! (Death8699)

Ibridoma - Norimberga 2.0

Midnight - Let There Be Witchery

#FOR FANS OF: Black/Speed Metal
A truly likable band that has two genres mixed into one. They put on a good live show as well! I like the fact that they're a metal band that sounds just as they do without the likes of other bands. Unique riffs and songwriting. The vocals suit them well with the music too! I hope that they continue making newer and newer albums. This past tour with Mayhem they didn't steal the show but put on a great performance. I liked their entire set. They really have a lot of energy to them and the riff-writing for this studio release was top-notch. They know how to write some pretty great songs that captures like no other.

The riffs are the best part of the album! They totally light up the speakers and they've shown that they can continuously write music that is catchy and unique. The album is only about 34 minutes but the whole way through they kill it!

Some really wicked unique riffs on the guitar front. These guys just dominate and on purpose. They've demonstrated that as a few members that are in the band that they can be ultra creative. The leads are just somewhat of a drawback. But still, they dominate!

Production quality is also good. A really well rounded album all the way through! I'm glad that I picked this up and saw them live. I'm not familiar with their older stuff but it seems as though they got some similar ratings. I'm not surprised that this black/speed metal band has done well even with the lack of people that they have at their live shows. I'm happy that the album emulated their live show. The music is what stole the show for me. They totally know how to create good guitar riffs throughout. It's not likely that you'll hear a band that has these two different genres into one. Absolutely phenomenal! (Death8699)

Metallica - 72 Seasons

#FOR FANS OF: Heavy Metal
I really loathed this release the first few times that I listened to it. And I thought that this is the end for them! But I did have a violent change of heart when I heard the riffs talking to me. Being a guitarist, I am now appreciating the dynamics of these songs wholeheartedly. James sounds like he did on 'Hardwired...To Self Destruct'. But I felt that one only had 4 good songs. This one flourishes throughout. 77 minutes of pure heavy metal and not really much thrash elements left. Those are gone after them 80's. Sometimes it gets hard to listen to them and then hearing the first 4 releases. That was when they were at their pinnacle.

A track that they did a video for "Lux Aeterna" actually turned out really well and the title-track is pretty cool also. But the bulk of the songs are just a bit above average. The vocals aren't anything like the 80's Metallica. James is actually singing and he's laid off of being brutal and aggressive. It's ever since the black album that they really changed. And I don't mean in a good way. You don't get that thrash metal intensity. The music is just semi-heavy and the leads are darting fast but in a way sloppy, but Hammett is 60 now, so age is wearing on all of them for that matter. It's their 40-sum anniversary in being in existence, that's quite a feat.

People, I think put way high expectations on this release but they seem to do as well as they could. I'm not justifying critics including myself but at least they're making an effort. It's been 7+ years since 'Hardwired...' but this one is 77 minutes in length (as I mentioned) so all that electricity is bursting out of your speakers. It's what is, the music is above sub-par. They're not overly aggressive or rock like they were in past releases. For whatever reason, Metallica has always scored higher on the Billboards than Megadeth ever has. Maybe Dave's still whining because of their success over his even though Megadeth has been more consistent.

There's a lot of good songs on here aside from the ones I mentioned. I'd say buy the CD or Vinyl, I think it sounds better than the digital. Mind you, Lars said stream it he's OK with that despite the suing of Napster when people were downloading their music I think back in 2003. I guess he figures that they have enough money by now. And another thing I might add is that Hetfield called the band "average musicians." I don't know about that but if they were average then they wouldn't ever be as successful as they have been over the years. I think that that was an unthinking statement. Metallica has been successful for a reason! (Death8699)

Hellfuck - Diabolic Slaughter

(Francesco Scarci)

Megadeth - The Sick, The Dying...And The Dead!

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash/Speed
Definitely happy I got the CD version of this album. However, the streaming displays two bonus tracks not found in the physical copy of the album. It was definitely worth the wait despite the critics opinions of this release. I'm so into this one. It's probably one of their best in years. There's just a variety of thrash/heavy metal on here. What's not shown is that Steve DiGiorgio is on bass for the recording, not James Lamenzo. He's a permanent part of the band however and toured with them this past year (2021). I got a chance to catch them with Hatebreed, Lamb of God and Trivium! What a show!

The music on here is supreme balancing metal guitar with some clean parts (small amounts) mostly distortion. Kiko takes care of pretty much all of the leads so that Dave could focus on the rhythms and vocals. That's how it's going to be from now here on. The leads were technical reminiscent of Marty Friedman. It's a shame he left the band in 2000 but Kiko is darn good replacement! He had a read of Dave's book when he joined the band. These guys have been a band since 1983 ever since Dave got kicked out of Metallica. Megadeth never had as much success as Metallica but still they have loyal followers!

Pretty much every song on here I like and the production quality is top notch. The guitars and vocals did the album justice, still furious as veterans! They still have it after all these years and the lineup changing over time firings and deaths unfortunately. But as frontman, Dave is always in command showing his good songwriting even at 60 years of age. He still has the fire! This one does any but disappoint. It certainly doesn't one bit the music steals the album. These guys are still as creative as can be and the riffs are catchy as all hell. I think that they're a while from retiring!

Again, I'm glad I bought this CD and showed support for the music industry that's failing due to streaming services. I'll probably collect CD's till I die. This is an outstanding album. I say that it's a "77" average but it's because there are some things that could use improvement but not many things. I'm glad that they took this "old school" approach to thrash metal than their other releases which were more heavy metal. I'm not in favor of the lyrical concepts but that is immaterial. What these guys did on here was monumental. I hate other critics that damn this one where I see as one of the highlights of 2022 in metal. Own it! (Death8699)

Soulfly - Totem

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash/Groove Death
My first release from Soulfly was 'Savages' which I found to be interesting. This release seemed bland the first few listens to. Then it kind of grew on me. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect here and well this one is a little bit more experimental and cut-throat. I've been a fan of Max Cavalera since the early Sepultura days in the band. He took quite a different approach then those days here is experimental Max. I like it though, the not knowing what to expect here sort of idea. The brutality, the temperance, the enlightenment. It's 40 minutes of in your face metal with vocal effects and odd time signatures.

This type of metal has a bit of a groove to it with death metal components. A really odd release including the leads with terror on the vocals bellowing. These guys have riffs that are simply atypical and sort of bizarre. I don't know how else to describe this album but just that: ATYPICAL. It might be the norm of how Soulfly works and that's how Max wants it, I just sense a peculiar sounds and rhythms. Nothing seems to remain the same it's just different from all respects. Then the clean tone guitars, it gives me pause about the direction the band is taking here. Weird metal and highly atypical.

Forty minutes of this going on what I've described here. It's solid here, Max sounds odd on this it's forceful but not to the extent reflective of Sepultura's Max in your face. Hell, he's in his 50's now still making metal and Igor doing Sepultura tributes too. He's had to relearn their songs but still sounds good. Soulfly is his project. Weird metal it's totally him just whatever he's doing he's putting his thoughts into this music the rhythms are cool and heavy but this experiment with Soulfly puts Max in a different position. I don't hear a plethora of fans liking this band. Those I do because it's metal but it's just different genres.

The anger and brutality is here but Max is in a league of his own dynamics. If he continues in this direction, who knows what to expect on the next LP. More experimenting or something more straightforward? It's unpredictable as to where he's going here. Heavy guitars, clean bouts and vocals with an echo/reverb. This guy is totally metal, it's just his ideas for metal aren't at all the same as the Sepultura days where he's utterly thrash galore. But on 'Roots' is where his strange where his writing went opposed to 'Beneath The Remains' and 'Arise'. I think the expectation is a new Sepultura here with Max but it's so not. Don't expect that at all. For Soulfly fans, this is a keeper! (Death8699)

Slayer - Repentless

(Alberto Calorosi)

Solicitor - All Debts On Death

Dead Head - Swine Plague

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash/Death, Kreator, Sadus
I was taken aback after hearing this! What a speed/thrash killer release! Vocals sound a little like Warbringer's vocalist but a little bit different and the music is top notch. I totally dig the riffs on this one. Definitely innovative for them being that this is my first exposure to this band. I enjoyed the album immensely! Though, there's too many solos for my taste. But the intensity is on just about every track! With exceptions, of course. This album has the grit to be strong the whole way through! I think that's it's deserving of a "B" rating overall. I found it to be straightforward and consistently good!

I really like a lot of the riffs they're spewing out on their guitars! They sound great (the tone). It's perfect crunch tone for quality playing. The whole album seems to be strong with consistent riffs that makes the songs flow like an ever flowing stream! (Dismember) This band is quality and they have many years to go in this genre. Another thing I like about this one is that it's pretty raw. Kind of like Metallica's 'Kill Em All' but not as much, still as a comparison it seems to be like that sound. This band plays some pretty fast and technical riffs.

As I talked about, the production is good just the guitars and sound is raw. But that doesn't ruin the magic of this release. I would take out excessive leads but that's just me. It's another reason why I marked points off from the score. But the vocals fit well with the music. In that respect, it's solid. I'm not a fan of the lyrical concepts, just the music. That seems to be the strongest aspect as to what's going on here. Their music is what drew me into this release. The band has some other albums out that I haven't listened to yet. Actually heard about them from a buddy of mine.

I had to order this CD because I'm hearing way much of what I'm into with thrash/speed metal bands. And just discovering this band by word of mouth makes me want to get all their releases! But anyway, you can listen to the digital copy on Spotify or like me show support for the band and buy the physical copy of this album. There are just so many highlights to this release and the energy is top notch up there! That's what you have to love about this band, their strength in songwriting and aura they send to the listener. Check them out! (Death8699)

Annihilator - Ballistic, Sadistic

#FOR FANS OF: Speed/Thrash
Never too late to discover an old school band! This is a solid release...it has all of the elements to making a solid album. Everything seemed to flow here and I'd say it's a cross between heavy metal and thrash. I like a lot of the riffs and the sound quality was good! I enjoyed the whole release. They have offered a lot in 30+ years being around in the metal genre. I'd have to say that the older material was a bit raw for me. On here, it's straightforward and to the point. Great songwriting! Every band member does well be it the lead guitar department, rhythms, vocals and drums they're all killing it!

I like how they change things up on here fast/slow/medium tempos but mainly fast in your face type of deal. I think the riffs are the best they've put out in years and fresh! These guys know how to make a quality record! I liked it from beginning to finish. I'm going to look into more of their material! They just tear it up in the music department! The vocals are unique, too! I like what they've done here, for sure! All the band members are way talented and it shows on here. I would definitely say that they're thrash/heavy metal. They've been a consistent band and they're not going away, I hope not!

Talking about the sound quality, well the production quality/mixing was done very nicely! Everyone on here contributes their part it's good that they made some quality riffs because a lot of bands might have it musically but due to low budget the production sucks. This is an example of quality in the sound so it does the LP justice! I'm surprised they're not a well talked about band. I've got a lot of catching up to do on their stuff! They really show maturity and wise musicians. It's an album here that you cannot get sick of. It takes a lot of spins to hear all the sounds but 'Ballistic, Sadistic' never gets (to me) old.

Do the band some good and purchase this on CD! They have a lot to offer metal and if you've been following them over the years this is no surprise to you! I'm glad I stumbled onto this release! They show no sign of quitting anytime soon. This lineup is strong and as I've pointed out, nothing here is half assed. They did a great job showing their excellent musicianship! Be sure to follow them on Spotify or YouTube if you don't want to buy the CD. Keep this one alive and don't discard this modern day aspect of the band. They all are good on here and be sure to take a gander at this one! (Death8699)

Last Legacy - In Human Condition

BACK IN TIME:
(Francesco Scarci)

Megadeth - Rust In Peace

BACK IN TIME:
http://www.secret-face.com/
#PER CHI AMA: Thrash/Speed
Probably my favorite Megadeth release to date. It's just melodic as all hell! That's what drove me to like this album! Dave sounds great, too! Especially on "Holy Wars..." and "Hanger 18." Megadeth has been such a huge influence in the metal community since they came about after Megadeth's great Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica. They've been more consistent than that legendary band staying within the thrash/heavy metal roots. They never sold out, they always came back to write more great music but on 'Rust In Peace', the riffs were top notch, ABSOLUTELY!

Both Dave and Marty rip on the lead department! And the riffs are God-like. "Holy Wars..." probably my favorite song from the entire album. It's just so original and fresh. The intro to "Hanger 18" is killer too. But the whole album displays areas of amazing creativity by Dave mostly. I can't believe that Dave considers himself as a "failure" because of getting fired from Metallica. He's way better than he gives himself credit for especially for albums such as this and 'Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?' Amongst the countless other classics that Megadeth has contributed to the metal community!

The production was decent though it could've been a little better. But still, the album is ingenious! They deserve all the press that they get for this one and many others. Megedeth always came up with fresh riffs and on this one you'll hear what I'm talking about. These guys rip it up Nick and Dave Ellefson sounded great as well. Nick's passing at 51 was just way too young! And Dave now is out of the band permanently. What a waste. But his time with Megadeth was grand. New material is going to be out now too, but to reflect on this, Megadeth was at their primordial best and most creative. Other bands have duplicated riffs from them.

I had the cassette of this that's how old it is! But it's still a countless classic! They stayed great in the 80's and 90's but I kind of took a break from them in the later 90's and more recent albums. I kind of lost interest and wanted to focus only on the classics. Definitely a band that will never be able to duplicate. Only emulate. A lot of bands cover Megadeth songs and for a good reason: they AWESOME! I'm sure newbies to the metal scene need to get introduced to this album and other Megadeth albums that I mentioned. They're priceless! 'Rust In Peace' will go down as my favorite release of theirs ever! (Death8699)

Warbringer - Weapons of Tomorrow

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Thrash
This is probably their most versatile release ever. Not only are the riffs good, the vocals and sound quality are as well. Plus the leads are way technical. Everything packed in one great thrash outlet here. The music is what is the most captivating! The tempos range from fast to moderate to slow then some even clean tone. Some bass reminds me of Metallica from the 'Black Album', not quite that but that's just what it seemed to show as an influence. Every song on here is good and the intensity is high. It's a whole 5-piece putting together the full effort, ABSOLUTELY! They shred this one!

I'm surprised I didn't hear more about this, but it seems like the current reviews are dead on rating-wise. Though I do think this one is close to perfect. After full-length after full-length this is my favorite one! It seems to be the most coming into their own with the sounds. The riffs are right on check the most catchy sounds out of their entire discography. Not everything is fast, but they show a little more influence to crossover metal as well as primarily thrash metal. Some songs aren't fast at all, but the intensity is all here. Some riffs seem to be otherworldly. That's how much I esteem this compilation of original tracks.

Sound quality is way awesome and it seemed that every member put forth a dynamite effort. They just keep getting better and better. All the songs you should be forewarned about how many of them are blasting away. Contrast that to their slower stuff that's equally impressive. I was appalled to hear a somewhat ballad on here. But what's weird are that the clean guitar is going alongside that hoarse vocals. It makes it even more interesting and dynamic. They've come into their own in terms of originality. Especially on that one. But for a bulk of the songs, they are pretty much original sounding showing their influences.

I ordered a copy of this to support the band because I felt that Spotify isn't doing them justice streaming their music. But if that's all you can do, then Spotify or YouTube is it. I collect CD's so this one needs to show up in my CD wall. This one is definitely their best one to date. It's just so unique and killer sounding. The riffs are what stole it for me and the leads were phenomenal. The vocals are tolerable where on previous albums the screak sound was a little annoying. It's a little bit different on this one. Do the band some justice for putting out a monumental release buy their album! (Death8699)

(School Of Rock) - Hellblock 13

(Emanuele 'Norum' Marchesoni)

Jinx - Darkness is Worldwide

(Francesco Scarci)

Black Viper - Hellions of Fire

#FOR FANS OF: Heavy/Speed Metal
These guys sound pretty vintage heavy metal in the vein of Ozzy (old), et al. I really enjoyed this entire album. The songs are lengthy and quite innovative riff-wise. The leads are good, too! I'd have to say that every song is good on here. And the vocals aren't annoying like some other heavy metal bands. This band reflects the early 80's 90's era of heavy metal. That's what I like about them! They've gone old school and they're a modern metal band. I like how they put together the songs. And I don't hear the "speed" metal but the moderate guitar work. I really like this band. I'm glad I discovered them.

The music and vocals are the highlights to this album. The guitars were a little sloppy in some instances, but not on a whole-scale. A lot of tremolo picking with the rhythms. But the tempos were just reflective of a classic heavy metal album. I enjoyed it really. There was some sort of echo to the vocals and production. It just seemed to be how they wanted the album to sound. And the vocals at times were screaming in a high pitch. But it went along with the music. I liked the guitar the most. The riffs are wholly likable, that's what drew in their audience, I think. But the vocals and drums were good, too.

I'd say the groove this band gives off is significant! The rhythms are notorious for being catchy and original. It's just that the vocals have a tinge of Ozzy (as mentioned) in them, but it's still good to listen to. It's nothing too brutal. These guys are solely not mainstream at all. This is a band that needs more publicity and recognition. I was happy to discover them when I did. Even though this album is about 2 years old, it's not really lacking in anything. It's straight forward and grappling. They seem to draw in their influences without duplicating them. The riffs are totally invincible I think they're the highlight, absolutely.

If you're just in the metal (general) genre, you should be able to dig this with immense joy! Or just want a change from brutal genres then you're set. They seem to attract people that are interested in many different forms of metal. So if you're like me, check them out when you want a change from say death metal. These guys are straight heavy metal with a punch,. The riffs are awesome and the originality is there too. You can download or buy the physical CD. I'd say the latter to show support to the band. I might have to do that myself keep these guys going onward! (Death8699)

Dust Bolt - Trapped In Chaos

http://www.secret-face.com/
#PER CHI AMA: Speed/Thrash, Destruction
The one thing I like about this band (among many other things) is the fact that they have their own unique sound to them. And vibe. This album isn't overly brutal, it has a cool feeling to it. The guitars have some unique riffs and they're done with precision. I think that the vocals here fit the guitars. The riffs are cool and fresh a nice way of organizing songs to make them interesting. Their vocalist actually "sings" too. I think that the whole album just smokes. I cannot fathom why anyone would think ill of this release. It's quite diverse and mature. The riffs hit home with me, unique stuff like their older material but a little catchier (to me).

This is under 40 minutes and the last track is a ballad. Pretty well done outro to the album the vibe was glorious. I don't hear too many thrash metal bands that actually have singers that "sing." That's why I like this so much because the aggression is there but the voice sets the groove to the songs. The backup vocals are good, too. I think this band is highly underrated and not well known. They sure are dynamic! I liked this the first time I heard it. It's one of those that you either like it or you think it may be too mild. I thought it was terrific! There's no songs on here that suck they're all good and the energy is all there.

The production quality is phenomenal for a not well known band. Their is kind of a reverb vibe to the vocals and music, which sets the tone for the album. The riffs go well with the vocals they go side by side them. I think that this is a highly underrated album and it's sad in a way because this band has so much to offer the metal community. I think that as long as they keep making music the way they do, they'll get noticed. I'm trying to spread the word with this release. I'm sorry but a poor rating is unacceptable. I think that they're way high up on the ratings. That's just my take on the album. It's filled with thrash metal vigor!

I would get this on CD if I were you it's worth it. I'm glad I did because I liked all the songs. They're German version of thrash metal has them among the likes of Destruction, Kreator, et al. Of course they're taking their influences and making their own sound and voice. They really need to spread the word and buying the CD is a step in the right direction. Same with their older albums, they're good as well. This one is less aggressive and more focus on the vocals and vibe. If you're not able to get the CD, at least visit their Bandcamp site. You need to hear this album despite what other critics are saying! Own it! (Death8699)
