Afsky - Om Hundrede År

#PER CHI AMA: Depressive Black

Gli Afsky sono una one-man band danese guidata da Ole Pedersen Luk, che ha rilasciato quest'anno il nuovo album, 'Om Hundrede År', un'offerta inquietante e atmosferica, che ci immerge nella maestria musicale del mastermind nordico, sia per temi lirici che impatto generale sul genere. 'Om Hundrede År' mette in mostra il talento innegabile del polistrumentista nel creare paesaggi sonori cupi ed atmosferici sin dall'iniziale "Stormfulde Hav". L'album intreccia intricate melodie di chitarra, potenti percussioni e anche elementi ambient. Ogni traccia è meticolosamente arrangiata, permettendo alla musica di fluire e refluire, creando in tal modo un'esperienza coinvolgente per l'ascoltatore. Le voci inquietanti di Ole Luk aggiungono un'energia cruda e struggente all'insieme della composizione dell'album. Le sue urla angoscianti unite ad un cantato a tratti più melancolico, catturano perfettamente l'oscurità ed l'atmosfera introspettiva dell'album. Se poi ci mettete anche liriche profondamente radicate in tematiche di disperazione, isolamento e oscurità dell'esistenza, potrete lontamente immaginare con cosa avere a che fare. Tuttavia, i testi in danese, pur evocando un senso di nostalgia e introspezione, non ci aiutano a scoprire ulteriormente le sfumature qui contenute. Gli Afsky comunque provano a spingersi oltre i confini del black metal, offrendo una miscela di elementi atmosferici, melodie e aggressività pura che provano a distinguerlo nella vasta scena del black metal, esplorando nuovi territori ed emozioni con grazia ed intensità. Alla fine 'Om Hundrede År' è un'esperienza di black metal coinvolgente e al tempo stesso inquietante soprattutto laddove i nostri cercano di sedurci con chitarre acustiche (tipo la potente "Tid") o passaggi in tremolo picking che smorzano quel filo di brutalità che permea comunque l'album. BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

#PER CHI AMA: Atmospheric Black

Gli Astaroth erano un gruppo austriaco dedito ad un black metal e 'Violent Soundtrack Martyrium' rappresenta il loro secondo sigillo. E che album! La violenza che li ha contraddistinti sin dagli esordi è rimasta immutata, ma in questo lavoro sono state aggiunte le tastiere per rendere più completo un sound reso già assai interessante dai grandi riff di chitarra evocativi e diretti. Nel complesso ci sono stati miglioramenti che hanno coinvolto anche la registrazione, qui resa ineccepibile. Le tastiere nei momenti più lenti hanno un impostazione quasi gotica. Per concludere, vorrei aggiungere che con l’inserimento delle tastiere la band sembra aver perso forse quella spontaneità e semplicità che prima li avvolgeva, ma sicuramente 'Violent Soundtrack Martyrium' si presenta come un buon lavoro.

Meshuggah - ObZen

#PER CHI AMA: Djent/Techno Death

Dai riff nodosi alle complesse indicazioni di tempo, 'ObZen' dei Meshuggah, spinge i limiti del metal estremo. Pubblicato nel 2008 (e recentemente ripubblicato in occasione del suo quindicinnale), l'album fonde abilmente brutalità ed eleganza, segnando una nuova era per il genere. La traccia di apertura, "Combustion", dà il tono all'album, intrecciando intricati e dissonanti schemi poliritmici in una potente dimostrazione di aggressività. "Bleed", probabilmente la traccia migliore, mostra la meticolosa magia tecnica del batterista Tomas Haake mentre comanda i ritmi intricati che sono alla base della voce gutturale di Jens Kidman. "Pravus", un'altra traccia chiave, vede la band manovrare brillantemente attraverso progressioni di chitarra dissonanti e indicazioni di tempo complesse, conducendo gli ascoltatori in un viaggio caotico ma intrigante. Nella traccia finale, "Dancers To A Discordant System", la band scandinava sperimenta abilmente con il groove, mostrando un lavoro di chitarra strabiliante che oscilla tra dissonanze stridenti e versioni melodiche. La traccia finale, "Pineal Gland Optics", lascia gli ascoltatori su una nota cruda e viscerale, riecheggiando l'intensità complessiva dell'album. Le complesse strutture ritmiche abbinate a voci minacciose creano un paesaggio sonoro avvincente che sfida lo status quo. Per ogni fan del metal tecnico e progressivo, 'ObZen' è un must da non farsi scappare, un lavoro di incrollabile intensità che integra efficacemente l'abilità tecnica della band con la loro caratteristica brutalità sonora. Helheim - Terrorveldet

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

#PER CHI AMA: Black Epic

Ripeschiamo un vecchio mcd degli Helheim, band norvegese di black epico. 'Terrorveldet' inizia con un‘intro molto strana ("Helheim Part 1") fatta di campionamenti di batteria e tastiere strutturate in modo epico, che può lasciare un po’ perplessi i meno inclini alla tecnologia ma tutto sommato ha un suo fascino ammaliatore. Arrivando agli altri due pezzi che compongono il dischetto, si può dire che la formula degli Helheim non è cambiata rispetto al passato, eccezion fatta forse per una semplificazione nella struttura dei pezzi, resi un po’ troppo insipidi e con poca personalità. Il mio consiglio è di cercare lavori più strutturati e interessanti (leggasi 'Yersinia Pestis' o 'Blod & ild').

Spider God - Blackened: Pink

Gli Spider God ci ricascano... un altro lavoro di cover è uscito e questa volta non sono i Beatles a giovare ai vostri padiglioni auricolari ma Zara Larson, Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato e Ariana Grande. Si avete letto bene, le regine della pop music. La prima, vincitrice dello Swedish's Got Talent a 10 anni, viene coverizzata in "Tame", reso qui un pezzo frenetico, di scuola Children of Bodom, con i classici vocalizzi della band inglese a graffiare e le chitarre a rincorrersi impazzite. "Good" è il pezzo della teen pop star Olivia Rodrigo, riletto e stravolto ovviamente nel tipico stile Spider God che stravolge completamente questo e gli altri pezzi a venire, tanto da renderli quasi difficilmente riconoscibili, fatto salvo per l'intro di "Twenty-nine" di Demi Lovato, che parte in sordina per poi esplodere nel black caustico di britannico marchio di fabbrica. In chiusura, "Problem" di Ariana Grande per gli ultimi vorticosi minuti di quattro song che potrebbero tranquillamente essere nuove tracce della band inglese. Chissà ora chi saranno i prossimi prescelti da essere coverizzati. (Francesco Scarci)

Iskandr - Spiritus Sylvestris

Evolving so much from the seminal sound until the music is remarkably different from what we knew, it’s not something uncommon in the black metal genre. The legendary Norwegian project Ulver is an extreme example of it, so its not a complete surprise to see how the Dutch duo Iskandr has changed with its new opus 'Spiritus Sylvestris'. In any case, I wasn’t expecting such a step forward in its evolution, as its previous albums, from the debut album 'Heiling Land' to the latest one ‘Vergezicht’ showed an evolution, yet the black metal elements were still a core of its sound.

With ‘Spiritus Sylvestris’ any of the aforementioned black metal elements, as the shrieks, raspy guitars or speedy drums are completely gone. The new opus has a strong influence from genres such as darkwave, post-punk, just to mention a few. The vocals remind me especially these genres as they are clean voices with a strong melancholic touch (and chanting/ndr) as we can appreciate in a song like "Waterwolf", for example. This track has a more percussive and lively rhythm mixed with an ethereal atmosphere, especially when some cool old school synthesizers are added to the composition. This right blend of elements makes this track my favorite one. The low tuned/baritone subtle guitars have a quite monotonous pace in general terms, and although the mentioned track has a slightly greater variation, other tracks like "Hoor het Smeken" or the lengthy "Hof der Valken" contain little variation in their pace. It is the album closer "Nachtvorst" which saves the day, having again the more upbeat and energetic pace that "Waterwolf" has, which sincerely works very will with this music style.

Although ‘Spiritus Sylvestris’ might be a pleasant listen for those who enjoy genres like darkwave and post-punk, my honest opinion is that this album lacks some strength and variation in its structures. There are some nice moments and melodies here and there, but at least for me, if this was the direction they wanted to follow, some more power would be a welcome addition. Some will disagree, but my feeling is that this album lacks the strength of a powerful post-punk album and at the same time the more present ambience of a pure darkwave album. So, it falls in the middle of both approaches, lacking something from both. (Alain González Artola)

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Death

One word: BRUTAL! This album is unrelenting death metal. I'm not sure what I like more 'Whisper Supremacy' or this one. It's a close call really. I think that both are pretty solid, if not substantial! The music is just all out fast and furious. The album could've been a bit longer but oh well. Lord Worm's vocals are wholly guttural. It makes the album sound heavier than it already is! The music on here is pretty up-tempo the whole way through. And the lead guitar work is solid. I think the rhythms are anything but catastrophic. They just know how to make effective death metal. And technical at that.

I've found this album to be easy to like because the riffs were well thought out and technical. This band paved the way to modern technical acts like Archspire, et al. The leads definitely are spellbinding and the rhythms are ferociously fast! The whole album is pretty much like this! There isn't much let-up though tempos DO CHANGE. It's a mixture of riffs a lot of speed and some down-picking. But all-in-all it's well rounded in its entirety. I'd have to say this is one of my favorite albums of all time! Cryptopsy just knows how to come up with music that's amazingly original and expansive.

Lord Worm fluctuates on here with low-growls and contrast that to other higher pitched screaming. Everything about this release I like. The only thing that I don't is the longevity of it. 32 minutes is too short, but when you have a jacked up guitar player on here dishing out technical riffs it's hard to pan out a long album unless there were more tracks. But suffice to say here that this album deserves an "80" ABSOLUTELY! There are no real flaws to it and everything came together on this. The music, drums, vocals and production quality were all extravagant. Keep playing this one you cannot go wrong!

You might be able to find out about this on YouTube or other streaming sites like Spotify. I went ahead and bought the CD. It is WORTH IT! Uncompromising and unrelenting! An album that just packs a huge punch to your eardrums! Definitely check this out, it's an older release but worth finding out more about it. The production gave it justice and the listener has no real caveats except to get ready to hear spellbinding death metal galore. These guys tear it up, entirely. And their follow-up 'Whisper Supremecy' is almost equally as good, if not even better. But Lord Worm isn't on that one. Check this out! (Death8699)
