Straight forward death metal with a big-ass kick to it! Various different tempos in the guitar riffing and combine that with screaming/low bellow vocals puts these guys in a different realm! They thoroughly kick some serious ass! Their music is pretty unique and insurmountable. No doubt that this release is nothing under an 75 rating. The intensity is high and there's a plethora of blast beating. They remind me a little of blackened death metal to the likes of a band named Blood of the Wolf via Chicago, Illinois. Not entirely, but they sure as hell resemble it somewhat. Few may disagree, but I think I've narrowed it down.

The vocals along with the music go steadfast and without any compromise. The vibe is there with the death metal kicking serious ass! I was impressed when I first heard this! It's my introduction to Vomitory. Thanks for the recommendation from a friend!

The music is all over the place, but not in a bad sense. Just that it's constantly fluctuating. It makes it unique and always what's guessing that's to come next?! I really dig everything about this release. The music mostly. It's filled with varying degrees of intensity. I've grown a great liking to this album the more spins I give it.

I was surprised to learn that these guys are from Sweden but they don't use the traditional Swedish pedal that a lot of Swedes do with their guitars. I'm glad that they changed up that sort of typical sounds with traditional death metal from that part of the country. I'm totally in awe about how unique this band is with all the tempo changes and the vocals. The drums are right alongside the music and it's tight. The vocals though kick ass and keep the sound to be totally underground! The music here is all their own concoction and the fury/anger is totally felt in the music. I'm surprised that they're not entirely well-known.

They sure as hell keep it brutal and I like this entire album. There isn't a song on here that I disliked. All of this releases just grapples me. And it seems that they got some positive press. Definitely a thumbs-up to those who recognize good death metal! (Death8699)

Hateful - After the Last Breath

#PER CHI AMA: Techno Death

Primo lavoro ufficiale per questa band emiliana dedita ad un death piuttosto claustrofobico e doomish. Il death degli Hateful è ben suonato e registrato in queste quattro tracce per una durata di oltre 20 minuti di materiale. Tra le influenze potrei citare sicuramente la scuola americana, bands come i Death e qualcosa dei Pestilence, poi molti richiami al metal classico (soprattutto per le parti soliste) e così via. Provate a immaginare 'The Fourth Dimension' degli Hypocrisy suonato con uno stile un po' più americano, ma con lo stesso feeling doom e pesante, e magari potrete rendervi conto di come potrebbe suonare questo demo. Ottime le linee di chitarra e la voce con tutti gli arrangiamenti, il tutto suona davvero efficace e potente. Il materiale più recente ('Set Forever On Me' è l'ultimo lavoro uscito nel 2020 per la (Transcending Obscurity Records) segna l'incremento delle parti parti più aggressive, dategli un ascolto e intanto ascoltiamoci queste quattro vecchie tracce.

Prima uscita su CD di questa interessante underground tape label di Napoli che ha pubblicato ottime bands come gli Spite Extreme Wing e gli Hiems. Nei 70 minuti e più di questo platter, possiamo trovare materiale underground di Triumphator, Buio Omega (Ita/Aus), Skoll, Temple Of Tipheret (Ger), Noctifer, Gorewinter (Fin), Nazgul, My Dark Sin, Azagal (Fin), Malvento, Imago Mortis, Kratornas (Phil), Abhor, Impuro (Bra) e Banshee. Naturalmente questa compilation, come del resto tutte le compilation, è caratterizzata dalla presenza di bands valide ed altre alquanto inutili, ma questo come si sa, dipende anche dai gusti personali, quindi non starò qui a far nomi o elenchi. Ci tengo solo a menzionare un esempio di cacofonia pura da parte dei filippini Kratornas, band veramente insulsa che poco ha a che fare col resto. Artwork ottimo e produzione omogenea, un buon prodotto per chi cerca bands da ascoltare e da scoprire.

Beenkerver – Twee Wolven

#PER CHI AMA: Epic Black

La saga delle one-man-band prosegue e questa volta ci conduce nel mondo di Beenkerver (all’anagrafe Niels Riethorst), polistrumentista originario di Gelderland, nei Paesi Bassi. Dopo il disco d’esordio uscito lo scorso anno, ‘Ontaard’, il mastermind olandese, in compagnia del batterista Nico de Wit (Alvader, Bezweing), torna con un nuovo EP di tre pezzi, ‘Twee Wolven’. La proposta della band ci porta nei paraggi di un black metal ispirato, melodico, e stranamente interessante, visti i contenuti alquanto scontati della proposta. Il concept del dischetto è legato ai racconti dei vecchi nativi americani e alla lotta simbolica tra due lupi che in realtà rappresentano le emozioni che albergano dentro ognuno di noi, l’uno collegato ad emozioni cattive (l’odio, l’invidia, il risentimento, l’avidità, ecc), il secondo invece legato a emozioni positive, quali gioia, pace, speranza e amore, ecc. Chi vincerà? Questa è la domanda che si pone l’artista mittle europeo in questi tre brani, pregni di melodie, suggestioni folkloriche (“Deel 2 – De Strijder”), accelerazioni post-black, harsh vocals, ed epiche cavalcate di scuola Windir, eseguite in tremolo-picking (“Deel 1 – De Dromer”), ingredienti sicuramente stra abusati, ma che in questo contesto, trovano un loro perchè. Tornando poi alla domanda del musicista, la risposta dei Cherokee sarebbe che prevarrebbe l’emozione che uno decide di cibare, mentre Beenkerver cerca di esplorare un'ulteriore opzione, ossia pensare alla co-esistenza dei due lupi. Insomma, la classica domanda esistenziale su cosa prevarrebbe tra bene e male, un argomento già sviscerato più volte in passato da altre band e che qui, trova per lo meno un pizzico di interesse, legato ad una ricerca musicale all’insegna di un black melodico che non lascerà del tutto scontenti. Amras Numenesse - There Was One, Died

Altra one-man-band, questa volta proveniente dalla Turchia, Izmir per l’esattezza. E come spesso accade, i progetti con un unico mastermind, si muovono nell’ambito del black. E quindi, nemmeno il buon Amras Numenesse fa eccezione, proponendo in questo EP (e con già otto full length alle spalle!!) un black scarno, melodico e mid-tempo che si dipana, in ‘There Was One, Died’, attraverso tre pezzi. Si parte con “Death Time” che sembra catapultarci indietro nel tempo e nello spazio, ai famigerati anni ’90 in Scandinavia, direi a cavallo tra Svezia e Norvegia. Se infatti di primo acchito, avevo accostato il sound del polistrumentista turco a Burzum e compagnia, sul finire del brano, ho colto in un riffone di chitarra, tanto dell’eredità lasciata dal buon Quorthon e i suoi Bathory. “Suicide” ha un incedere ancor più flemmatico, con le chitarre ai limiti del minimalismo sonoro e lo screaming acido e glaciale del frontman a rendere il tutto più angosciante. Non sono male quei piccoli frammenti arpeggiati che si sovrappongono alle ritmiche mid-tempo. Nulla di originale, peraltro nemmeno registrato magistralmente, che tuttavia si lascia ascoltare, non fosse altro per rivivere i fasti di un mondo che fu e oggi non c’è più. In chiusura “Die”, a completamento di un trittico di brani che si muove fra black nudo e crudo e un depressive sound che si palesa attraverso una ritmica sofferta (peraltro assolutamente priva di tecnicismi), e al contempo carica di una certa acrimonia, che non lascia nè vinti nè vincitori. Primordial - Spirit the Earth Aflame

Le band irlandesi non fanno il solito metal; non tutte infatti dimenticano le proprie origini e come fatto anche dai Primordial, la musica folk sta alla base delle loro composizioni. Non vi basterà un solo ascolto per interpretare al meglio 'Spirit the Earth Aflame', ma ogni volta ne scoprirete sicuramente elementi che vi erano sfuggiti senza accorgevene. I Primordial non vogliono sviluppare le loro idee e gusti musicali semplicemente suonandole, ma vogliono ricrearli trasmettendoli tramite atmosfere che ripercorrono temi epici e il black metal che si susseguono accompagnati da cantati puliti e più estremi. La musica non è brutale e violenta ma l’impatto metallico è presente e non delude, forse la voce del cantante si mostra inferiore nei momenti scream ma impressiona invece in quelli puliti, in cui sembra uscire dall’ambito metal. Il lavoro dei Primordial non delude le aspettative, come purtroppo han fatto altri loro connazionali e compagni di etichetta, i Cruachan.

Profeci - Ub​ó​stwo

#PER CHI AMA: Black/Death

Se la Les Acteurs de l'Ombre Productions è votata prettamente alla promozione di band black francesi, la Godz ov War Productions è invece focalizzata a mettere sotto contratto band estreme polacche. Ecco quindi arrivare quest'oggi i Profeci con il loro terzo album, 'Ub​ó​stwo', il tutto cantato peraltro in lingua madre. Il quartetto originario di Poznań ci spara in faccia sei nuovi pezzi di black death, che non hanno troppo da dire in fatto di originalità, com'era lecito attendersi, ma che comunque, mettono insieme un sound dotato di un suo perchè. "Stare Stworzenia" ci tira immediatamente in faccia un bel po' di schiaffoni con un riffing serrato in cui a mettersi in mostra è la voce del frontman Piołun, davvero convincente, mai troppo scream, nemmeno troppo growl, ma sempre molto chiara e comprensiva. La musica dei nostri ha poi una discreta dose di melodia messa a supporto di un'intelaiatura metallica robusta e aggressiva. La stessa che, nella successiva "Jaskinie", vede incunearsi influenze più sperimentali che palesano un certo vigore emozionale che fa da contraltare all'acrimonia delle chitarre, qui in versione post black. Attenzione, perchè l'ascolto man mano più approfondito del qui presente, fa emergere parti davvero interessanti, dai rallentamenti percussivi a strali di violenza inaudita con le grim vocals del cantante a farsi notare a più riprese. Con un piglio quasi folklorico, i nostri aprono "Jedność Wielości", un pezzo oscuro ma comunque dotato di una certa animosità black, spigoloso al punto giusto ma sofferto in certi decadenti atmosfere che evidenziano le qualità di una band a cui inizialmente, forse non avevo dato la giusta attenzione. E invece, ho dovuto ricredermi, perchè i Profeci alla fine riescono a colpirci all'altezza giusta con un sound indovinato, che avrà ancora modo di stupirci con il riffing sghembo e dissonante di "Głód" o ancora con lo splenico temperamento di "Bez Niej Byłbym Niczym", dovuto principalmente alla lunga parte arpeggiata e alle clean vocals utilizzate dal vocalist. In chiusura, a voi la furia iconoclasta di "Dytyramb" che chiude un album che merita sicuramente più di un ascolto per poter esser meglio assaporato in tutte le sue sfumature. (Francesco Scarci)

Saturnus - The Storm Within

Saturnus is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in the doom/death scene. Formed in Denmark, back in 1993, the band has built a flawless career full of top-notch albums. The band’s opus, entitled 'Paradise Belongs to You', remains as one of most iconic masterpieces of the genre, and was the first of the exclusively five albums which have been released during its 30 years of existence. This clearly shows the amount of time that Saturnus has taken to create each of these albums, which I think it explains the high level of each of them. From the inception of the project, only the bass player Brian and the singer Thomas remain, as numerous line-up changes have affected the band’s pace to release new works. In any case, the passion and commitment of both members have thankfully made possible to still enjoy Saturnus easily distinguishable music until these days.

As the doom/death metal genre itself, Saturnus musical approach has remained quite stable during its existence. There have indeed been some little evolutions in these three decades of existence, but no one will deny the fact that from that first album to the newest opus 'The Storm Within' Saturnus trademark sound is still there. The new album is a clear proof that when passion and quality coexist, there is no need to make great changes in a band’s style. In the hands of this band, doom/death metal sounds particularly melodic and captivating, mainly thanks to the superlative guitars' work, which are the shining stars of this opus. All the seven compositions of this album have many inspired harmonic riffs which are simply delightful. Pace-wise the album hasn’t great changes, but it is undeniable that some tracks have a remarkably slow pace, very distinctive of this genre, and even a stronger sombre tone. The album opener duo "The Storm Within" and "Chasing Ghosts" are fine perfectly examples of this. The longest tracks of the album give the necessary room to display all the slowness and atmospheric beauty that Saturnus can offer. The melancholic, yet beauteous, guitar melodies are accompanied by the profound and guttural voice of Thomas, being this duo, the iconic portrait of what Saturnus has offered during its career. Clean vocals are minority in this album, but some spoken lines appear, for example, in "Chasing Ghosts", which give a theatrical point to the composition that fits perfectly well with this genre. I have already said that tempo changes are not very common and strong in this album, but this doesn´t mean that we won’t find them. "The Calling" can be defined as a slightly faster track with a tremendously catchy main melody that immediately sticks to your head. This one is for sure one of the highlights of the album and a clear proof that you can add some variety in a doom/death metal album, at least if you want. Another nice example of composition with a livelier pace, if this term can be used in this genre, is "Breathe New Life" which follows a very similar pattern. It’s a shorter track with a very additive main melody, even though I personally consider "The Calling" a superior track. The rest of the tracks are more similar to the gloomier first tacks of "The Storm Within". However, there is song which stands out because it is quite distinctive, and it is "Even Tide", as it could be defined the ballad of the album. It’s a very melancholic track with a delicate and beautiful piano playing the main role. It is accompanied by clean vocals in the form of spoken lines, but also sung parts in a very sweet and sorrowful way. It is indeed a composition that evokes the profound sadness for a forgotten beloved one.

'The Storm Within' is definitively another inspired moment of Saturnus perfect career. Any fan who listens to this album will immediately feel this warm sensation of being in a well-known and appreciated place. The tasteful guitar melodies are our guide through this melancholic journey, and I honestly consider that fans will be eager to embark themselves in this sea crossing more than once.
