Goatwhore - Constricting Rage of the Merciless

#FOR FANS OF: Black/Death/Thrash
Okay, so I’m late to the game on this one. Call it laziness, call it not paying attention, call it what you will, but I've never paid attention to Goatwhore until just recently. I had heard some tracks here and there and they didn't do much for me, probably because their previous offerings were more in the realm of black metal. A night of late YouTube browsing led me to “Baring Teeth for Revolt” and my anus just wasn't ready. I can’t quite describe the feeling I had when hearing this, but it was like savage bliss. The guitars, drums, riffs, it sounded so violent I couldn't believe just how awesome this was. Roughly five minutes later I had the album ordered. I had to have this. Sammy Duet is well known for his work in Acid Bath, and for good reason. Acid Bath were an amazing band that pushed the boundaries of what we call rock and metal. Thing is, I had no idea he was in Goatwhore. If I did, I would have paid more attention a long time ago, as I love the fuck out of Acid Bath. Here we kick things off with “Poisonous Existence in Reawakening” and boy, these guys don’t fuck around at all. Straight for the throat, chocking the life out of you, riff after riff. This still has the black metal vibe, which is also very apparent on “Unraveling Paradise”, but it’s done extremely well. The songwriting is top notch, the arrangements are very carefully thought out, and everything just makes sense musically. The production and mix on the album is what I would call perfect for this type of album. Punchy, clear, but not too clear, if you know what I mean. This is still definitely rough around the edges and has a lot of bite to it. It’s not overly polished at all. “Baring Teeth for Revolt” just may be one of the best metal songs ever written. Yeah, I went there. But everything about this song just screams METAL. From the riffs, to the outstanding vocals and perfect drum work, this is just a slice of fucking metal heaven. A big slice at that. Also, that has got to be one of the most brutal, most aggressive guitar tones I've ever heard. Shit is just violent. Sounds like Sammy’s ESP wants to rip your fucking spleen out. The album features some more dynamic work rather than severely punishing death/black metal. The dynamics are laid out nicely and it appears that there’s something here for everyone, though I’m sure Goatwhore couldn't give a fuck about anything or anyone. These guys just play the music they want to hear. I mean you’re not exactly setting yourself up for success with a name like Goatwhore to begin with. This is top notch stuff, definitely check it out if you like your metal fast, aggressive, and no nonsense whatsoever. You will not be disappointed. (Yener Ozturk)

Exodus - Blood in Blood Out

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash Bay Area
So what we have here is album number ten from the legendary Bay Area thrashers Exodus. And without beating around the bush let me just say that YES, I am very happy to have Zetro back! This is the way Exodus should sound. While Rob Dukes was alright, he wasn’t anything special, and in my opinion never really fit in with the Exodus sound. He was too much of a screamer, and not enough of a singer. He didn't have the soul of Exodus and just generally came off as a too aggressive shouter, which just doesn't work with their sound. You don’t need false “tough guy” vocals to sound aggressive, which Zetro happily proves on this album. So album number ten, huh? I think it’s pretty safe to say that most of us were underwhelmed with the past few Exodus releases. While some good tracks were sprinkled here and there (Funeral Hymn is still amazing) overall it felt like filler. So what we have here is more old school Exodus, which is not a bad thing. Because when Exodus get it right, they really get it right. So lets see what they've come up with in this new installment of Bay Area thrash. "Black 13" is what I would call a mediocre intro to an album. Though it gives us many clues of what’s to come – a nice, thick guitar sound, rumbling bass, and Tom Hunting’s trademark thrash beats, which sound nice and punchy and clear. The song itself is nothing to write home about, though. I just expected better. Thankfully, the next track “Blood In, Blood Out” delivers on all levels. Classic Exodus from start to finish, this is what I wanted to hear. Exactly what I wanted to hear in fact. Fast, brutal, catchy – it pretty much has it all. Easily one of the highlights on the album has got to be “Salt the Wound”, which features Kirk Hammett. I personally thought this was a pretty cool thing to do, as Kirk was a founding member of Exodus. So for him to return to the band and deliver a guitar solo was a nice touch. People saying that it was just done for a marketing gimmick.. well, you may be right. But it didn't bother me at all because the guy has every right to be there. That said though, this is easily one of the best songs on the album. The riffs are just pure, no nonsense thrash, with a fair amount of groove thrown in. Tom’s drumming just seems to make the song, as the bridge leading up to the guitar leads just wouldn't work without that double bass groove. Kirk’s performance here is good, though obviously it’s nothing ground breaking or earth shattering. He pretty much came in and did what he did back in the day when he was allowed to do the same in Metallica. And come on, that’s not a bad thing. The song on a whole however gets full points from me, it’s just pretty badass. BTK is another track which features a guest performance, and this time it’s Chuck from Testament. Sadly, the song does pretty much nothing for me. To be honest, most of the rest of the album doesn't do much for me. There are some good tracks sprinkled here and there such as “Body Harvest”, “Food For the Worms” and maybe “Honor Killings” One thing about this album, and with new Exodus in general, is that the songs are just too damn long. An Exodus song should never pass the five minute mark. After that you’re pushing it, and there are six songs here which are over six minutes long – and that’s more than half the album. Cut it out. Exodus songs should be short, to the point, and aggressive. Around four minutes in length is perfect for them, and it seems that anything after that just turns into a chore. Overall, I both like and dislike this album. The positives are that it sounds great and that Zetro is back. The negatives are that it’s simply just not interesting enough. I was expecting more this time around, especially since the last two albums didn't go over so well. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still fun to listen to from time to time, but strangely most of it just goes in one ear and out the other. There’s nothing really to cling onto.. and the songs are just so goddamn long. (Yener Ozturk)

Decapitated - Blood Mantra

#FOR FANS OF: Death Metal
I have been waiting a long time for this album. Unlike a lot of people, I didn't have any problems with 'Carnival is Forever,' even though most people I've talked to don’t really care for that album. And I admit, when I first got it, I gave it a few uninspired listens, then just put it on the shelf and forgot about it. Not quite sure what prompted me to pick it back up a year later and give it another spin, but when I did, I found myself not listening to anything else. Over time it really grew on me, to the point where I prefer it to previous Decapitated albums. So to be perfectly honest, I was hoping for more of the same, and 'Blood Mantra' pretty much does just that. However, it does it far better than I would have expected. This is going to sound like blasphemy, but I think this is now my favorite Decapitated album. Why? Because I see it as the band finally matured and found their feet, their own style. While 'Winds of Creation' (while being the great album that it is) was pretty… how do I say this.. it sounds like it was written by teenagers, which it was. Decapitated are much further into their careers now, and yes, it’s like a completely different band. Gone are the speedy, death metal sections in favor of more rhythm driven guitar playing. That’s not to say that this album doesn't have an abundance of great riffs on it, because it does. It’s just that the style is so different it’s completely silly to even compare the old and new Decapitated. Anyway, onto the what really matters: the music. The album kicks off with “Exiled in Flesh”, before launching into “The Blasphemeous Psalm to the Dummy God Creation”, and I must say, this is exactly what I was wanting to hear. Untraditional guitar work, excellent drumming, and just a rhythmic powerhouse. I was a tad disappointed when Krimh left the band, but new drummer Mlody appears to be doing a damn fine job. The production and sound on this album are worth nothing. It’s pretty similar to 'Carnival is Forever', but meatier, with thicker, angrier guitars. Vocals are nicely laid in the mix, which is a good thing, as I have no problems with Rafal’s style, he fits the music perfectly. Someone like Sauron would just not complement the music well, and as I have said before, that’s all in the past now. The drums and bass are nice and clear, nothing too exceptional or flashy here, they just do their jobs well and serve the songs the way they are meant to be served. The title track is just an absolute monster, it just oozes greatness and class. That opening riff is killer. The verse riffs are killer. The breakdown at 3:56 is killer. The band are in top form and at this point they’re just knocking it out. This is some seriously heavy and addictive song writing. “Nest” sees Vogg taking an even more rhythmic approach to guitar playing here, but not in the Meshuggah sense really, though I could see how some people could find similarities, even though to me the two bands sound nothing alike. What really kicked me in the face was “Instinct”, probably my favorite song on the album. The riffing is just masterfully crafted, and you can tell that a lot of work and care went into this song. Not just the riffs, but in the arrangement as well, which is what truly makes it shine. The breakdown at 3:34 and the section which follows right after is probably one of the best things I have ever heard from Decapitated. “Red Sun” gives you a bit of room to breathe before delivering the final blow in the form of “Moth Defect.” I've heard some people accuse Vogg of abusing the low E string and calling them nu-metal. Either those people have dicks lodged firmly in their ears, or have no idea what they are listening to. Too much chugging? Abusing the low E? May I point you in the direction of “Spheres of Madness”? That’s what I thought. Overall, I was very impressed by this album, and I had set the bar quite high, even though I tried not to so I wouldn't be disappointed with the end result. But disappointed was the last thing I was, as this is a serious slab of just straight up, quality metal. The boys from Poland are on top form, and this is not to be missed. (Yener Ozturk)

Cannibal Corpse - A Skeletal Domain

#FOR FANS OF: Brutal Death
It’s that time for another Corpse album. I won’t mess about at all and just have to get this off my chest – this album is mighty. It’s one beast of an album, full of everything and anything you could ever want from Cannibal Corpse. For starters, I’m glad that the band chose to work with a different producer. Not that there was anything wrong with the Rutan albums, but it’s just good to change things up a bit sometimes. It’s a bit of a gamble, sure, but if it works the pay off can be huge, just like it is here – and just like it was on Kill. I wish more bands would take this approach, such as Nile, rather than just working with the same producer over and over again. You never know who’s going to bring out the best in you. “High Velocity Impact Spatter” – just the title is enough to get you going, and shit, does the track ever deliver. One of the most crushing opening tracks in Corpse history. You’ll immediately notice that the guitars sound thicker than ever, the bass is nice and audible, the drums are exactly the way they are supposed to be, and Corpsegrinder sounds fucking amazing. His vocals are nice and loud in the mix without washing everything else out. Perhaps the best thing about this album is that it has something for every Corpse fan. The lighting fast tracks, the mid tempo, groovy tracks, and the downright dirty, evil tracks. It’s easy to hear things from their entire discography here. I've talked with a bunch of Corpse fans about this album, and everyone seems to have their own favorite set of songs – yet they are mostly different. Which just shows to prove that this album caters to a lot of different Corpse styles, which is great. The band, being the seasoned pros that they are, perform flawlessly on this record. That’s to be expected, and it would really surprise me if the technical ability wasn't up there with the best. What did surprise me though was the energy rushing through this album, something I felt their previous record “Torture” lacked. But here, it’s all over the place, and it’s absolutely relentless, and great to hear the band so determined. Another great thing on this album is that we have more contributions from Pat. Criminally under rated, Pat is an amazing guitar player. Not just technically, but he’s a fantastic song writer as well, so hearing more of his stuff on this album is a real treat. I wish Rob could get in there a bit more as well, as I have always loved his writing style in Solstice and Malevolent Creation. That said though, this is the best Cannibal Corpse line up there ever was and will be, and here the guys are in top form. For me, it’s hard to pick my favorites, but I would say that the strongest songs on the album are “High Velocity Impact Spatter”, “Sadistic Embodiment”, A Skeletal Domain”, “Headlong Into Carnage”, “Icepick Lobotomy” and “Hallowed Bodies.” I realize that that’s basically half the album right there, but Corpse really have cut the fat off of this one and just thrown that sucker on the grill. And the end result is just pure death metal badassery. Go get this. (Yener Ozturk)
