Tigguo Cobauc - Fountains of Anguish

#PER CHI AMA: Black/Sludge
The English band Tigguo Cobau, whose peculiar name has historic ties with its hometown Nottingham, presents its sophomore effort entitled 'Fountains of Anguish'. The second album is always a crucial moment for a project as they must make a step forward and distinguish themselves from the fierce competition. Tigguo Cobau's approach is quite interesting as they blend some black metal influences into their core sludge metal sound, while adding a strong atmospheric touch.

'Fountains of Anguish' incorporates all the aforementioned elements, achieving a remarkably solid balance between abrasion and atmosphere. The typical aggressiveness of sludge metal is complemented by melodic and ambient sections, resulting in songs that have a unique touch. This blend is evident not only in the band's instrumental music but also in the vocals. The raspy vocals play a significant role, but cleaner vocals are also utilized throughout the album. The album features ups and downs in intensity and tempo changes, creating a dynamic listening experience. Take, for example, the track "Eternal Quietus," which showcases marked contrasts between different sections and overall intensity. The vigorous pace and crushing riffs, accompanied by ferocious screams, make this song one of the heaviest yet mesmerizing with its hypnotic atmospheric parts. Renatos Ramos delivers a stellar vocal performance, effortlessly varying his tone as needed. He typically uses high-pitched tones for extreme vocals but also incorporates lower tones, closer to metal, as seen in the crushing and heavy "Inner Disaster." Another standout track is "Engaged Putridity," where all the elements that define the album are tastefully combined. The song is vibrant from start to finish, exuding tremendous energy with top-notch guitar work, abrasive vocals, and the ever-welcome atmospheric essence that enhances the entire work.

'Fountains of Anguish' by the English band Tigguo Cobauc, is definitely a remarkable album. The different elements and influences of the band are combined in an inspired way, creating compositions that exude energy and honesty. I strongly recommend giving it a chance if you enjoy songs with a well-balanced brutality and atmosphere. (Alain González Artola)
