This album is way HEAVY and to the point. These guys show maturity in their songwriting skills. I'm glad that this was sent to me (as a gift). It's sure worth "playing time" since it's the genre that I highly respect: melodic death metal. There aren't enough bands nowadays that play this style anymore. At least, not to my knowledge. In any case, these guys really hit home here. It's not just "HEAVY" but it shows some ferocious tenacity. They really bleed the eardrums. The riffs are fantastic and straightforward. They leave no prisoners here. I though that album concept was simply ingenious. Great songwriting!

The vocals are split which suits the music. But you have an etch of Carcass in their during the 'Necoticism/Heartwork' days. Not entirely, but they show their influences as that. I'm surprised that they don't have an extra extent hearing this great melodic death metal! They deserve a bigger audience. With music like this, they play out a lot of modern bands. I believe that they're suited up for more great things! Their guitars are tuned low like Carcass and some of the melodies (like I said) reveal their true influences. And the vocal tradeoff (growls/screams) are a lot like other bands that have done it like that.

I'm hearing most of their own stuff though despite their obvious influences. They don't need to prove anything with their music, they've done it on here. I haven't heard their newer stuff, but on here is enough to get a feel for what the future has in store. Anyway, I have nothing but admiration of this band. They spent 42+ minutes of music that just has total balls to it. I'm in deep thought every time I hear this thinking of what good can I say here that they absolutely deserve. Well, expect heavy guitarwork, aggressive vocals, and great sound quality which makes it a pinnacle of an album. Nothing on here is "wishy washy." They killed it on here.

I would urge you to try this one if you're into extreme metal. It's got everything that makes for good in an album, remarkable. And the music if you're a guitar player is phenomenal. Technical at points and unrelenting. Definitely shows age and experience in writing for this release. I still can't believe that no one has commented on how great this release is! It's definitely up to par on simply great albums that I pointed out on this review. Please do yourself a favor and check out some of their work at least. Even if it's just a song on here, something! It's worth you listening time to this! (Death8699)

Harmdaud - Skärvor

#PER CHI AMA: Epic Black/Viking/Death, Windir

Dalla piccola cittadina di Skellefteå, ecco arrivare il progetto di Andreas Stenlund, gli Harmdaud, di cui lui è mente ed esecutore unico. 'Skärvor' è il secondo album (dopo 'Blinda Dödens Barn' del 2017) per il factotum svedese, uno che tanto per dire, è stato il chitarrista live di Vintersorg, elemento questo da tenere a mente. Ma andiamo con ordine e prima cosa, lasciamoci sopraffare dall'opener "Kraft", una traccia spettacolare di black epico dai tratti sinfonici che ha da regalare splendide melodie e dirompenti inni, omaggio ai guerrieri vichinghi. Il riffing prosegue compatto in "Stöpt", mantenendo intatta la matrice viking che alla fine ammanterà l'intero lavoro. Ciò che verosimilmente cambia tra una traccia e l'altra è l'approccio chitarristico, a metà strada tra black e death. In questa seconda song ci sento un che dei Windir, anche se le chitarre sono qui meno taglienti rispetto ai colleghi norvegesi. La voce poi è più votata al growling tipico del death metal piuttosto che allo screaming efferato del black, questo per dire che la proposta del mastermind viaggia in bilico tra i due generi, senza che uno prevalga alla fine sull'altro. In "Bränt Till Grund", un'infuocata traccia nera come la notte, ecco affiancarsi al cantato ringhiato di Andreas il buon Vintersorg alla voce (che ritornerà anche nella movimentata "Sprickorna I Verkligheten"), con la sua inconfondibile timbrica epica e pulita, con la song che vive di continui cambi di ritmo in un incedere a tratti selvaggio. La title track ha un intro che esula da death o black, sembra quasi di derivazione sperimentale, alla Devin Townsend per intenderci. Però quando le vocals demoniache di Andreas fanno la loro comparsa, il riffing si fa più serrato, anche se non è proprio da ascrivere al metal estremo, ha un'origine più classica e comunque fuori dall'ordinario, a sottolineare la maturità artistica del factotum svedese. "Koloss" è un pezzo thrash death, sembra quasi che il cantato di Andreas poggi sulla ritmica degli Over Kill, giusto per spiegarvi la mia incredulità nell'ascoltare un brano che ha tempo anche di ammiccare agli Old Man's Child e di rallentare vertiginosamente in un break dal forte sapore doom. Ancora una volta, il risultato è positivissimo, al di sopra della media, per cui non ci resta che godere appieno della bravura del musicista nordico. Ancora viking sound questa volta vicino agli Amon Amarth (ma con un tocco alla Rotting Christ), in "Natten Oss Genomströmmar", ove Andreas tenta, ma non vi riesce appieno, di proporre un cantato vicino a quello del suo illustre ospite Vintersorg. "Näven Kring Min Hals" parte decisamente più tranquilla, prima di esplodere nell'ultimo giro di chitarre e growling possenti, in cui la melodia la fa comunque da padrona anche nel break centrale che prepara allo scoppiettante finale, dove alla voce di Andreas, si affianca il ruggito delle chitarre. Per quanto mi riguarda, 'Skärvor' necessita solo di un paio di consigli finali: aggiungere un batterista in carne e ossa e migliorare la grafica della artwork di copertina. Per il resto, una sorpresa totalmente inaspettata: ottimamente prodotto (anche qui grazie allo zampino del buon Vintersorg), ben pensato ma soprattutto ben suonato, gli Harmdaud hanno tutte le carte in regola per far ancora meglio in un immediato futuro.
