Ironflame – Blood Red Victory

So the mighty Ironflame have returned with their third album in less than three years; with their sophomore effort being released just sixteen months after the debut. Andrew D’Cagna has this incredible ability to consistently write songs that give me those same feelings that I got the first time I heard Halford, Dio or Dickinson. As he writes and records everything, there is a true consistency to the music without being the same album over and over again. While the sophomore was much more ambitious in the song writing. 'Blood Red Victory' sees the direction of the songs more in line with the debut. This time he also seems more focused; and the result is nothing short of amazing.

One thing that I noticed immediately was that the solos were no longer being supplied by Wheeling, West Virginia shredder extraordinaire Jim Dofka. His solos on the sophomore were beyond brilliant. Instead, this time D’Cagna decided to go with the two shredders that are part of his current touring band; Jesse Scott and Quinn Lukas, the latter being with D’Cagna in the Pittsburgh veteran melodic metallers Icarus Witch. That was a really smart move. Both guitarists are brilliant live so it was great to see their actual input into the songs. Each solo on this album is brilliantly thought out and take each song to the next level.

The songs themselves are just metal as fuck. The riffs, the melodies, the solos, and those unforgettable vocals. Andrew D’Cagna’s vocals are just brilliant and I truly believe he set the bar for the modern true metal vocalist. The opener, “Gates of Evermore” has an opening riff that sets the tone for the song. It kind of reminds me of 'Glory to the Brave' era HammerFall. The melodies are catchy and the choruses are infectious. These are heavy metal anthems that can stand rightly along side any of the classics. I dare you to listen to “Honor Bound” and not get that feeling like you are hearing metal again, for the first time. “Blood Red Cross!” That “OHHHH” during the bridge is fucking brilliant! I could listen to that song over and over again. The song builds to this incredible solo three quarter the way in….I got goose bumps!

I don’t know how this guy keeps pumping out quality heavy metal; all along with playing bass and writing songs with stoner rock band Brimstone Coven as well as being full time vocalist for Icarus Witch. “Graves of Thunder” has that melodic metal feel of an Icarus Witch song while still having that Ironflame sound. “Grace and Valor” take it right back to epic power metal with some incredible dual harmony riffs driving the verse. Brilliant! “Night Queen” is the longest song on the album and reminds me of “Shadow Queen” off the debut…could even be a sequel. Nonetheless, none of that take away from the sheer brilliance of the execution. The song sucks you in with the melodies and hooks. The perfect album closer.

Classic heavy metal is making a comeback and there are some really great bands and some incredible metal coming from this resurgence. Ironflame have set the bar, quite high I might add for this movement. Three consistently incredible true metal albums loaded with everything that made me obsessed with metal to this day. Darktimes – Utter Coldness

I just recently discovered Slovakia natives Darktimes while surfing through YouTube. What struck me off the top was their brand of black metal was cold, grim, and loaded with atmosphere but it did not sound like it was recorded in an old tin can. In fact, the production on their sophomore effort, 'Utter Coldness', is quite clean and makes for a really nice listening experience. The band has only been around since 2013; they are completely self financed and release their albums independently so I was quite impressed with the professional recording job on the album. But what stood out was the songs. Yes, the songs are cold and grim but what we really have here is a well thought out album that has many layers to it.

After the brief intro, “Black Flame Prophet” ferociously bursts from your speakers. The song is the perfect album opener full of energy, brutality, and serious riffs. This band makes really good use of tremolo picking and their tremolo leads add that element of melody into the mix. The tempo is not all blasts but instead they mix it up to include a lot of traditional metal elements. The vocals are not a continuous high raspy shriek but more of a controlled deeper growl even going guttural at times. “Awakening – Towards the Perpetual Eclipse” is one of the best and most complex on the album. Starting out blasting and ferocious they throw in this cool tremolo lead riff that adds the melody slows it down a bit just to go right for the throat again. Once again, their use of the tremolos leads add that right atmosphere.

“Waters of Infinite Horizons” is one of those songs that adds that traditional metal tempo in the beginning only to flow into these melodic tremolos. This song is where the band kind of reminds me of Old Man’s Child in how they add the melodies in without losing the ferocious atmosphere created by the riffs. “Where Darkness Resides” is a little over seven and a half minutes of sheer black metal grimness. This song takes a more epic turn loaded with brutality, melody and atmosphere. The song slows a bit towards the end and actually makes for a somewhat awkward flow into, “Noci večnej chlad, ” which is a slower, more eerie sounding instrumental that closes the album out.

Nothing makes my metal heart happier than to discover great metal and my discovery of Darktimes is one of those moments. As the weather tuns cold and grim during the winter months, I love good black metal that can add to the atmosphere created by nature. 'Utter Coldness' is a welcome addition to my winter black metal playlist. (The Elitist Metalhead)

Stormwarrior – Norsemen

When I first heard “Iron Prayers” back on 2002, I was blown away by Stormwarrior’s unapologetic resemblance to Walls of Jericho era Helloween. They even went as far as to have Kai Hansen produce and guest on their debut album. I was instantly a fan. The follow up to their debut was absolute perfection and one of my all time favorite albums. The band has changed over the years but one thing that has not changed, their approach to classic speed metal. It’s been almost six years since their last release, Thunder and Steele, so the time was right for the return of Stormwarrior. With the release of their sixth full length opus, Norsemen, they are back with a vengeance. It’s amazing how this band can stay true to their form without sounding dated or stale.

Keeping with Stormwarrior tradition, they begin with “To The Shores Where We Belong,” an intro that only builds you up to the burst of speed and energy you would expect from these Teutonic masters. “Norsemen (We Are)” bursts from your speakers with the fury of a marauding viking horde! A speedy epic number that sets the mood for what will be fifty minutes of head banging , horns up speed metal. Starting with speed and fury the song is classic Stormwarrior; including their signature melodic, anthemic choruses that you will find yourself signing along to by the time it rolls around for the second time. “Storms of the North” keeps it going with one of their most catchy choruses yet. The riffs are epic and the solos are godly.

“Freeborn” changed the pace a bit having that galloping tempo, crunching riffs, and melodic dual leads. Being one of the teasers released before the album, it’s just metal as fuck from beginning to end. They have this atmosphere that make any song they create sound epic. “Odin’s Fire,” “Sword Dane,” and “Blade on Blade” are classic Stormwarrior. These songs could have been on Northern Rage. “Shield Wall” starts off with some dual lead melodies over some epic keyboard effects then bursts into some great dual lead work for the intro that leads into the verse. It actually comes off as quite catchy. What this song does is prepare us for the epic masterpiece that is “Sword of Valhalla.” Clocking in at just over eleven minutes, this is an absolute beast of a song. This is everything heavy metal should be in one song; speed, epic riffs, melodic epic choruses, and godly soloing.

Once again, Stormwarrior proves to the world that staying true to your formula can pay off. This album is pure Stormwarrior from beginning to end. Their signature sound is is pure metal; nothing more, nothing less. I’ve never heard an album by this band that I did not like. Twenty-one years after their formation and seventeen years since the release of their blistering debut, Stormwarrior stands out as one of the best and most consistent bands in metal.
