Moloken - Rural - English

#FOR FANS OF: Post Metal, Sludge
We had left them just over a year ago, in the fall of 2010 with their brilliant first full length, "Our Astral Circle" and now finally the brothers Bäckström return, as always very well supported by Discouraged Records, with a new job. The sound does not blatantly changes compared to the previous album, and certainly is not bad if you were pleasantly impressed by that release. Their music, therefore, continues to travel in post-metal/sludge territories, however, in some darkest shades, less accessible, fuller of anger and certainly less full of easy melodies. "Rural" is an angry album. In its seven songs in its long fifty minutes, moods are alternating by winding between fury and irascible, occasionally leaving room for breakers in the limit of post-rock (the second half of "Ulv"). What amazes me most in the new work of Moloken, is a certain combination of the sounds that come from the strings of the guitar, sometimes really delusional or completely discordant (I am thinking of the psychotic ending of "Waltz of Despair" for example or the hypnotic beginning of the aforementioned "Ulv" pachydermic song - lasting 16 minutes - fierce yet obscure, that reminds of those wanderings of the school of Ved Buens Ende), which contribute confuse the listener a bit. The tribal and schizophrenic "Casus" serves as a bridge connection with «Blank Point " and I am gradually beginning to realize the good things contained in "Rural", a job to say the least controversial, certainly difficult to digest, but given its complexity, of important progress. The vocals of Niklas continue to be those in the limit of the caveman, so as it was outlined in the previous review, but it is of little importance because I measure the band in its ability to vary their own sound, and I guarantee to you that there is not one single minute of respite in which runs the risk of dozing off or lying down, although we have the impression that their sound can be trapped in doom like or even psychedelic sounds (and I think the suffocating and sick "Thin Line"); no fear though, because the quartet of Holmsund comes out even more fiercely and ready to crash your bones. I am shattered by their impetuousness, by their dark gray, almost the same while watching the sun setting fast on the horizon, leaving soon place for a dense fog which possesses you with the darkness of the night. Hostile, neurotic, glacial, fearful, are just some of the adjectives that come out of my mind after listening to this disfiguring "Rural", an album to have in your collection at any cost. Raving! Riul Doamnei - Fatima - English

#FOR FANS OF: Symph Black, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth
If Cradle of Filth had the miraculous growth of Riul Doamnei during these last years, they would have probably sold hundreds of millions of records until today, perhaps even as Michael Jackson. But instead the progression of the British band has been very gradual, but they were lucky enough to be always closely linked to the typical screaming of Dani Filth, which has so far also influenced the vocal performance of "Cardinal" Federico DB, vocalist of the Italian band that I am here to review today. This entire intricate preamble was to tell you that in the meantime, the singer of the Veronese ensemble is shockingly improved since the days of "Apocryphal", distancing largely from the "old" Dani, and with him the overall performance of the other members of the band. Certain accomplice is the experience gained by touring with monsters of the caliber of Rotting Christ, Krisiun, Decapitated, Vader and other extraordinary realities of extreme metal, but the Riul Doamnei, with this new job can have their saying in the field of symphonic black, next to the already mentioned Suffolk and the band of Norwegian Dimmu Borgir, perhaps the reality which extends more the five-pieces of Fede and Associates. A really ambitious work this of the Riul which presents us the new controversial concept of the album based on the figure of the Virgin Mary: twelve pieces for a total duration of nearly an hour, an hour full of dense emotions, related to fierce raids in black territories, from the harsh vocals of Fede, to the majestic orchestrations of "Bishop" Giorgio M. and to the symphonic chorus Therion like. Starting from the enigmatic opening track, "13th Oct. 1917, Miracle and Apocalypse," which commemorates the Miracolo del Sole by Fatima, in which a substantial number of people claimed to have seen the solar disk change color, size and position for about ten minutes, we are immediately overwhelmed by their extreme music. The release, which revolves around the events related to Marian apparitions brings out, one after the other, excellent tracks, which shows the class of the five "servants of evil." Going back to what has been done in previous work, the Riul continue to develop their own sound, enriching it with phenomenal arrangements of explicit derivation of Dimmu Borgir (period "Death Cult Armageddon"), and for this reason a big applaud goes to the talented Giorgio and a special mention as well to the deserter drummer "Friar" Enrico P., who at the end of the recordings has left the band after eleven years of militancy. It will be hard to replace him with another drummer of equal value. But back to the music, which is overflowed with sublime melodies, epic black cavalcades, screaming of great value and exceptional chorus (beautiful "Bestiary of Christ" and "Sodom Convention"). A brief interlude, and we arrive at "Stigmatized Under Marian Grace", a song that reveals once again their destructive "dangerousness” and that shows the goodness of the songwriting (much improved from the first chapter) and also a new vein as regards the solo (finally) of the capable "Deacon" Maurizio S, although this is not the episode where it is most appreciated. The military beginning of the "Of Misery And The Final Hope" (song in which also appears Sakis of Rotting Christ as a guest vocalist) shows how the Riul have improved even if the speed is not well supported and there is space for large quantities of melody and eerie female vocals with the guitars which in this case seem to refer to the Swedish Death of Dark Tranquillity. Yes, I feel, the desire to progress and not stagnate is there, is strong and Riul are constantly searching for truth as the famous "Warriors of Light" by Coelho. The search of Riul continues until the final "The Fourth Daughter," which speaks about the fourth daughter of Muhammad, Fatima precisely, then finishing by weaving the Christian iconography with that of the Islamic religion, in what is probably the fourth secret, in a song with clear Arabian implications, which closes in an intriguing, fascinating mode and that predicts nothing positive, of what could be the clash between Christianity and Islam. Excellent return! (Francesco Scarci - Translation Sofia Lazani)

Serj Tankian - Elect the Dead Symphony

#FOR FANS OF: Symphonic Progressive Rock
In the silence of a rainy morning, dim light coming out from the window, a stream of music came to envelop me. And slowly I realized that my heart beat was following the pulse of the music. That was the first time I heard the “Elect the Dead Symphony” by Serj Tankian. I mean, we all know him from System of a Down and I have always appreciated Serj for his uniqueness. But hearing this CD of 14 songs, re-orchestrated in order to be performed with the Auckland Philarmonia Orchestra, I was speechless. And that my friends, does not happen often to me! Starting with “Feed us”, Serj takes us into his magical universe. He has a voice that awakes the conscience and moves forward to the collective subconscious, disturbing the dormant hearts. You do not even perceive that there is a life audience, clapping and shouting. The magic continues throughout the whole CD. Constantly changing styles, without obviously being afraid of experimenting, Serj goes from oriental fairytales with “Blue” to war marches in “The Sky is Over”, to burlesque atmosphere with “Lie, Lie, Lie”. Serj really unravels his voice in this release, defending his title as one of the best vocalists of today and in the same time, he does not lack of condensed messages in every song. Politics, war, economy, environment and of course, love. You will find here the first played “Gate 21”, which for me is the top track of this CD, together with the lyric “Empty Walls”. In the end of the hearing, you will be left feeling like you are one of the crowd in Patrick Suskind’s novel “The Perfume”. You just want to tear him apart, to consume him, in the hope that you will make even a tiny piece of this musical genius, a part of you. Let him take you to that beautiful, heartbreaking, arousing journey of his. Listen to it without second thoughts and spread the word of Serj. You will thank me later, as I thank the one who first played this CD for me. Respect… (Sofia Lazani)

*Shels - Plains of the Purple Buffalo - English

#FOR FANS OF: Post Rock, Progressive, Tool, Isis, Mogway
I was waiting for them, I do not hide it. The *Shels are certainly one of the most interesting truths within the worldwide post rock and with this "Plains of the Purple Buffalo," they come brilliantly to finish their second album, after the excellent results of "Sea Of The Dying Dhow" and the fantastic EP "Laurentian's Atoll", not to mention the almost impossible to find "Wings for Their Smiles". Yes, in short, I start not being very impartial, I realize that, but when I hear certain sounds echoing from my stereo, I cannot wait and I feel the obligation to tell to the world that they are missing something beautiful, yes beautiful, very banal word, but here with a certain impact. The new CD of these crazy (Anglo)Californians contains pure poetry in its notes and in the 76 minutes contained in this release, they will catapult you into another planet, a world hidden even in the wonderful cover of the CD, where a herd of purple buffalos, run on a stylized background. Brilliant, I can not find other words to describe the proposal of this U.S.’s band. And the music, you'll wonder, as I continue to write about everything and more, leaving out the most important part of this product, how is it? Vibrant since the initial notes of "Journey to the Plains," which opens the journey in dreams dyed purple, of these kids. And then, a crescendo of emotions, a progression of sounds that, starting from the tradition of post-rock sacred monsters such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, stretches its proposal through 13 succulent chapters, consecrating the * Shels, between the musical entities of the most remarkable personality and originality. The music, as in other works, has the lion's share, with long, sometimes very long cavalcades, where the psychedelic merges with post-rock ('70s-derived), rarely exploding in a more metal outburst, where even the wildest voice manages to find space. But soon, an ambient interlude or an acoustic piece will enable you to catch your breath, to lay back on your chair and to relax again, with sounds typical of the genre, here constantly of considerable thickness, enough to push me so high with the voting. If your minds are gifted with a musical flexibility, you have to grab this rare pearl, which might otherwise be confused in the chaos of useless record releases that are destroying the planet. Give up buying a disc of thrash or death for one month and for once, put yourselves at stake, put your musical tastes at stake, your beliefs and surrender to the overpowering collective creativity of this remarkable artists, you will not be disappointed those of you who listen to black metal, progressive, thrash, or gothic. The content of «Plains of the Purple Buffalo» is something that goes beyond the normal conception of music, and only the great artists are able to conceive. Wanting to make a comparison with the previous proposal of the combo, their sound, retains its fundamental strength, however, abandoning the unnecessary escapes in metalcore. Here you will only find crystalline class, an industrial quantity of instrumental parts, where the voice is left in the single instruments (and for someone like me who do not particularly like the lack of voice, I guarantee you that it was a big surprise), splendid vocal performances. Difficult to describe a song rather than another, I would like to tell you that I like them all, from the mad title track (part 2) to the melancholic "Vision Quest", the work presents super attention to detail, in the arrangements, in the technical expertise, in taste for the melodies, in the dreamy parts and in the more dark and angry parts. *Shels, the breath of fresh air that I was waiting, a shock to the metal world trapped in quicksand, a push to all the useless trends of the moment, an incredible journey into unexplored yet territory in rock music. Unique and inimitable! (Francesco Scarci - Translation by Sofia Lazani)

On a Bridge of Dust - Facing The Opposite - English

#FOR FANS OF: Alternative, Post Rock, Rock, Progressive
Reviewing an Italian band always puts me in a good mood and if the work is also well made, the day can only be positive. Our quartet from Verona comes up with this "Facing the Opposite" going to write an interesting chapter with regard to the alternative rock / progressive metal of our home. Of course, along the nine tracks you can hear the strong "Tooliane", influences but the well chosen melodic passages and a manual technique, makes you to appreciate this excellent album. The recording quality pre-and post-production are on a professional level, the same applies to the arrangements that will never be unpredictable and genius, but give continuity to the composition. The CD opens with the "Recurring Fault" which after a short guitar riff as an intro, immediately follows a combining powerful bass line and strong drums that sound good together in unison. "Reckoning" has an epic beginning, focused on the drums and guitars more open and stretched, but the riffs that distinguish the Bridge arrive at once, weaving a tight mesh that captures the mind and brings you to swing your head to the rhythm. Really beautiful, and personally I consider this the main title of the album. I had already appreciated "Barren Moor" in the previous EP, but even more in this new recording the melancholy of the track is alive until the end. Perhaps this is the most instrumental piece of the entire album. The album closes with "Outcast", which has one of the few main clean riffs in this release, which creates a psychedelic post-rock atmosphere, like Explosions in the Sky. But the trademark of the following closely riffs arrive as usual and bass / drums as a worthy accompaniment to the whole, even if they could easily steal the stage for how well they are designed. As mentioned, the recording quality is excellent, but particularly on the guitars a meticulous work was made. I can imagine the hours spent in finding the right settings but it was worth it, hearing the distortion so realistic and warm is a pleasure to my ears, clogged by so many cold and sterile sounds these days. Of course, bass, drums and vocals were not neglected; remain in the middle (high). If I may make a note to the Bridge, is about the voice. Certainly the singer is not that gifted to make you tear your hair out, but perhaps by knowing his limits, makes a careful use of his voice, without exaggerating, and blends perfectly with the idea of all the pieces. If the choice to play guitar and sing at the same time was made in order not to introduce another element to the formation, I totally agree (and understand) the choise of Bridge. It is difficult to create a harmony so perfect and to be able to maintain it. Well done, congratulations On the Bridge of Dust who are well appreciated in live also, while maintaining always a humble and friendly attitude. I would need more bands like this… (Michele Montanari - Translation by Sofia Lazani)

Amia Venera Landscape - The Long Procession - English

#FOR FANS OF: Math, Post-Hardcore, Isis, Neurosis, The Ocean
I thought the fire crackers of the new year’s Eve had reached their peak on the midnight of 1rst January 2011, but instead here I am, with a new CD in my stereo, to let myself be run down by the crackling mixture of post-hardcore, sludge and ambient of the very italian (and I say this with great pride) Amia Venera Landscape, a real lighting bolt in the calm sky of this beginning of this year. After the excellent test of the At the Soundawn, another amazing italian band is getting ready to compete head-high with the masters of the genre, if not to overcome them. I was impressed from the very beggining listening to this " Lunga Processione", primarily, by the very good quality of sounds, powerful, full-bodied, enveloping, that had me immediately conquered. How can I not mention the graphics, quite minimalist, but very intriguing, of the booklet, filled with lyrics and beautiful pictures. And then the music, which is after all the most important thing: I mentioned the fact that they play mostly post-hardcore, but let us not limit ourselves lightly by this label or by the stereotype that the word hardcore can raise, because inside the notes of "The Long Procession" is hidden poetry, anger, fury and unexpected tenderness, intrigue and mystery, all played with extreme passion, intelligence and unpredictability. The Venetian sextet opens the dance with the volcanic "Empire", condensed hardcore fierceness mixed with dark environments. I immediately remain thrilled in front of such great class and already I can not wait to hear the next song. "A New Aurora" is a wonderful song which, besides the ever present component of the brutal and scathing combo of Belluno, arises a breathtaking alternation of rhythms, stop'n go, post-rock atmospheres, with the voices (a growling angry and clean, with vocals of Klimt 1918 style) that cross each other, surround and play in an ascending climax that will reach its perfection at the end of more than 7 minutes of exciting and overwhelming music of this Amia Venera Landscape release, which I have already included among the best albums of 2010. A punch in the face suddenly knocks me down, but in reality it is "My Hands Will Burn First", then peace: I feel dizzy, my ears are buzzing, a hissing roaring penetrates my brain, but it is only the stunning gait of "Ascending", which perhaps has its defect in being a little too verbose. Other moments of sedating peace with"Glances (Part I)" (I would have avoided putting two purely ambient pieces one after the other) and here we have the second part of "Glances" exploding, where they are confirmed as a band of absolute value and technique, exquisite refinement and without doubt of great innovation and experimentation. Incorporated with the speed of light to the dictates of the genre (the band was founded in 2007) from the sacred monsters Cult of Luna, The Ocean and Dillinger Escape Plan, the Amia Venera Landscape has undertaken their own way with their own distinct and strong personality and that now the have released this explosive work. Let us not neglect to comment on the almost 14 minutes of "Marasmus", the most complex, articulated and particular song of these 10, enclosed in this gem. A relaxed beginning, strongly ambient, then thunderous explosion of guitars (there are 3 in formation) followed by fragments of melancholic post-rock, and then suddenly unleashed in my stereo speakers, crazy splinters of math to "disturb" my brain as only Dillinger know how to do. There is no trace of vocals in this schizoid song but it is better like this, you can enjoy it all in one breath and the long duration in minutes disappears in the blink of an eye. Not even a moment to enjoy a little peace and "Nicholas" erupts with its 8 minutes and goes to prove that the band is at ease in dealing with long lasting songs, denoting once again a maturity worthy of veterans. "Infinite Sunset Of The Sleepless Man" gives us time to recharge the batteries before the final "The Traitors' March" that confirms to me that a new Italian reality is ready and able to demolish the world with their sound, this new years. Majestic work! (Francesco Scarci - Translation by Sofia Lazani)

Aneurysm - Archaic Life Form - English

FOR FANS OF: Cyber Thrash, Fear Factory
"Sink or swim" must have thought the Aneurysm, one of the most underrated and unfortunate band in the history of our local metal, after having wrapped this new third work of theirs, where they have combined it this time really big. No, do not be afraid; do not take the negative connotation that usually this statement may have, but instead take it as very positive."Archaic Life Form" represents in fact a great leap forward compared to the previous "Shades", which was not actually a bad album, but that still showed some gaps in the composing key by the Venetian combo. With this new release instead, by the Kreative Klan Records, the quintet from Verona displays a brilliant effort, developing their music on a concept album set in a futuristic world where humans became extinct and the machines have populated the planet, cloning men to study their origins, but when the weakness of the feelings is discovered, the project is aborted. Of course I have summarized the content drastically, but I can assure you that the texts are revealed very interesting, as well as the musical proposal of the rest. Their sound rests upon a constant techno thrash basis until the initial "The Clear Obscure," which opens with a flattening rhythm, only to be interrupted by Gianmaria Carneri’s vocals. The production is surely bombastic, which is absolutely necessary to make it more enjoyable to listen to samples of various inputs, capable of making the final result very attractive and varied. The song results therefore as a mixture of aggression, strong doses of melody, a high technical level and a lot of cyber metal contrasts. If I were to make a comparison, I would say that Nevermore meets Anacrusis, playing in the Fear Factory style, not that bad, is it? Let's go further with "The Missing Element", where first of all let’s give an applause for the voice of Gianmaria, improved enormously in respect with the past, with a personal voice timbre, while the music is a stream of vibrant emotions characterized by the constant duality between power and melody . "Agent One" shows them play in a more cyber / industrial key with a number of confounding factors in the background really capable of transporting our mind in this imaginary world of the future, while the rhythm section beats like a maniac and axes unsheathe ruthless killer riffs. Intriguing, aggressive and creative, I like a lot this new appearance of the Aneurysm and the subsequent "Last Farewell" (which appear among other reminiscences of school Meshuggah) and "Angel" (a very melancholic song, opening with nostalgic touches of piano and Gianmaria's voice can only reminds us of the good Serj Tankian) continue to amaze me for their sophisticated and intelligent personality. The sound of a siren announces "Anomaly" and here the echoes of music take us back initially to The Kovenant , but then the band retakes their personal path stuffing the song with "anomalies", ie the effect of the disc jumping like it was filthy, enough to make me double-check if the dust has settled on the polished surface of the CD, but it is only a joke played by the ensemble to force my mind to repeat all these strange loops. Next in turn is the "Postulates" a song that travels in between thrashcore reminiscences and the cybernetic sound that characterizes Aneurysm of 2011.Closing the CD are the "The Great System" and "Progeneration / Deactivation", which ratify the incredible level of technical and compositional maturity reached in this new release. Not embracing this work would be a heinous crime, so go ahead and make it your own. The surprise of 2011? I hope so, in the meantime, good luck! (Francesco Scarci - Translation by Sofia Lazani)

Shadowdances - Misery Loves My Company - English

#FOR FANS OF: Gothic, Prog, Dark, Autumnblaze, Riverside
How I love the bands coming from the Baltic countries (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia), I do not know by what mysterious reason, but their music has always something magical in their notes. The Lithuanians Shadowdances that I am here today to review, are no less than that, with their self-produced work of more than 13 pieces. The music of Joudas (singer and drummer) and his companions, is a mix of dark gothic of fine atmosphere and deep emotions. It is a pity that few people have noticed about this band, that I want to say that it exists since 1994. The Baltic quintet's music can be described by the soft and orange colors of autumn, his mellifluous atmosphere contrasted with those of pacing rocking guitar lines. I like it, I really like the proposal of the Lithuanian combo, because it produces intimate suggestions during its hearing, perhaps because I love to immerse myself in the melancholy music flows and let the power of music to disturb my conscience. And for those who like me who love to indulge in this kind of sound, you will certainly remain a victim of the fascinating sound of the Shadowdances. "The Crawl", "The Girl" and the subsequent “Autumn Haze” are three splendid tracks that recall the early days of the Austrian Autumnblaze, but by adding a touch of poetry, which I repeat only the bands from those places, are able to confer to the music. Elegant, refined music, created and played by excellent musicians: "Misery Loves My Company" is an intense journey into the depths of the human soul, full of despair, anguish and fear. The central part of the CD is even more poignant, with the strong melancholic vocal lines of Judas to dominate the scene and dark environments to make their music sound like rain clouds ready to pour down heavy and endless rain. Desolate, nostalgic and restless, the Shadowdances could represent the perfect combination of Anathema of "Eternity" and the beginning of Riverside. What can I say more for this wonderful album? We only hope that luck will help the brave and here there is a lot of audacity ... (Francesco Scarci - Translation by Sofia Lazani)

Winter of Life - Mother Madness - English

#FOR FANS OF Death Progressive, Novembre, Oceans of Sadness, Opeth
I must admit I have had great difficulty in reviewing this "Mother Madness" because it is very difficult to find the right words to let you know what it is contained in this little gem produced by the combo originated from Naples. The album opens with the whispers of "Mattutino" song with a strong progressive flavor, which has the quality of immediately putting in evidence the tremendous potential of Elia Daniele on vocals, and generally manages to put on display from the start the excellent quality of the band coming from Campania, the song quickly slips away to make room for "Noumena", which highlights the influence of the sextet and an incredible mix of influences: signs of November in the guitar lines merge into their sound, perhaps because the recording was done at "The Outer Sound Studios "of Giuseppe Orlando; as regards the use of vocals however, I was reminded of the recently broken up Oceans of Sadness. The title track enters in an explosive way into the coffers of my stereo, and then give way to delicate touches of piano and a soothing and melodic rhythm, but very clearly never pander, and then the wonderful voice of Elia, able to use his extensive vocal range, to be in his own way, the best instrument of the Winter of Life: poignant, reflective, aggressive when needed, in short, comprehensive and excellent. And the music? A progressive metal marked by some extreme outburst, but also capable of digressions into jazz territory like on the title track (experiment already done, however, by the aforementioned Belgian Oceans of Sadness). But not only because "witHer" opens with a slap bass, taken on loan from almost any band with the funky vocalist that for a moment seems to make the rapper; but the music does not take long to take off again in a crescendo of emotions, this time thanks to the chasing scintillating guitars, immersed in the warmth of soft environments and also by the guest vocals of Tiziana Palmieri. This album won me over and every time I listen to it (maybe I'll be at the 50th time and I am still not tired), I find intriguing new details that lead me to listen once again. The quality of the Winter of Life lays in suggesting music that in the course of the tracks (all of them of considerable length), is constantly changing tune, alternating trips to neighboring death territories with beautiful riding rhyths, and in times when maybe the resurfaces the strong influence of the Novembre or other act of the progressive scene like Pain of Salvation. The result is a succession of great songs that will soon to creep into your head and make you wince, make you fully enjoy the great ideas that populate the mind of these six boys. What a pleasure listening to this "Mother Madness," what a pity I did only recently. Go on like this, I am waiting now for another confirmation; highly recommended! The Project Hate - Bleeding the New Apocalypse - English

#FOR FANS OF: Cyber Death, Industrial, Progressive
The fact that I have been following The Project Hate for a long time now, can be proved by the review of the old "Armageddon March Eternal" on these very own pages. I find myself here again to write about the band of Lord K. Philipson and his members, and I do it again with extreme pleasure, because it has been ten years now that for me, The Project Hate have been synonymous of high quality. And this "Bleeding the New Apocalypse" is nothing but that, but whose output has passed a bit quietly in the media (and perhaps also to the fans), and so from my part I want to give a little emphasis of this new release; I am here to give my support to one of the bands that I admire the most: I sit at my desk, I turn on the PC, insert the CD and I am off to listen the new "Bleeding the New Apocalypse," their eighth album, including the Deadmarch parentheses. Well, there must have been eleven years since the brilliant debut of the Scandinavian act, but the sound is not at all changed since then, and this is not intended as a criticism of the four member band, in fact I would like to reward their coherence and consistency in the passing of the years. The background sound system is still that of the seminal Swedish death (Grave and Dismember), in which gradually elements of any type are insinuated, from industrial cyber death through progressive, making extensive use of electronics and playing, usually, with the duality between the growling vocals of Jorgen Sandstrom and the angelic vocals of the Portuguese Ruby Roque, who replaced alas, the much better Enckell Jo. As always, guests are not lacking, and this time to help The Project Hate, you will find Leif Edling of Candlemass, the omnipresent Mike Wead (which we saw recently in Kamlath), Jock Widfeldt (Vicious Art) and Christian Ivestam (ex -Scar Symmetry). The result of this marriage? Crazy as ever, to the point of certifying the high quality of the Swedish band, beginning with Season of Mist, amongst others. Always characterized by a few and very long tracks, this release is not far from that, with six pieces for a total of 65 minutes of wild, psychotic music, with very complex structures, yet very melodic, thanks to the constant divine use of the keys and persuasive moments when Ruby delights us with her singing, although less convincing than the previous one, Jo. From a technical standpoint, the band confirms itself at high levels, stronger even by the new drummer, the explosive Tobias Gustafsson (Vomitory) and a rhythmical key work and solos which proves sublime. Difficult to indicate a piece rather than another (although I have chosen "War Summoning Majestic" as my favorite song), because all could play the role of the most successful song from The Project Hate. Well I think that you may have guessed by now, I really liked the "Bleeding the New Apocalypse" , for its ability to fuse the wild death rhythms made in Sweden, with sounds alien to the northern extremes of Europe, such as gothic, progressive and electronic perennially with great evidence. The songwriting is excellent, almost as excellent as is the production with all the instruments well balanced with each other and a sound really very full and effective that will push me to elect this work in the bests of 2011. A delightful confirmation, but I had no doubt over that , The Project Hate, as unjustly snubbed by critics and fans, represent for me one of the most interesting and charismatic bands on the international scene. Owl - Owl - English

#FOR FANS OF Brutal death
Kolf Christian must be a forge of ideas and above all must have plenty of free time to afford to have so many bands: Island, Valborg, Woburn House, Orbo, Slon, Centaurus-A, Kosmos Wald and now this latest creation, the Owl. Once again, helped by the loyal Patrick Schroeder, drummer on duty in several of its businesses, Christian creates this time a work that plunges into the darkest, more claustrophobic, intransigent and toughest death metal to hear, maybe also because of the endless duration of some songs. It begins with the "Conquering the Kingdom of Rain" and its 13 minutes of extreme sounds played on gloomy mid-tempo, distressing and at the end crawling like an extremely dangerous boa constrictor who is about to threaten and then grab its prey. In all this obsessive pace of guitars actually never that boring, are perhaps the dissonant sounds of the guitars which contribute to the darkening of the already gloomy by itself atmosphere, not to mention the growling vocals, which are making the proposal even more depressing. None of these hearings is easy to listen here, make up an excuse for yourselves soon; otherwise you too will end up being crushed in the deadly grip of the boa. From the “owl" this release probably only has those nocturnal sounds that are found in the finale of the opening track that gives room to a gloomy, brutal and pounding sound of the "Lost in the Melting Mountain Vaults Underneath of the Saints", a sort of psychotic version of Nile, merged with the delirious musical shrewdness of the visionaries Deathspell Omega, while the cavernous vocals of Mr. Kolf continue to haunt our worst nightmares. The suggestion of the Owl is proving increasingly deadly as it advances through listening and my poor ears are also strained by the long third track that continues to make palpable the feeling of death that comes out of in this fetid platter. At the fourth "Spell of the Ignis Fatuus That Lead to the impalpable Altar of Beasts", characterized by hyper fast blast beats, I almost thought that I got away with it because only a piece separates me from the end of this boring cd, but soon I realized that the conclusive "Threnodical Ritual at the Spectral Shores of the Eternal Sunset" lasts 30 minutes. Terrified by this discovery, I take a deep breath and I dive into the icy putrid waters that open the piece; I come across another sad discovery that in fact this half hour is made up only of ambient sounds, almost like one of those bookshop cd’s of the type “sea sounds”; troubling realization that destabilizes even more the hearing of this controversial work. Unfortunately I would not recommend this album to a much wider audience, but only to those who like extreme death metal sounds, only to be disappointed by the epilogue ambient. I do not know, hard to judge an album so psychotic, but on the other hand, by such a controversial guy like Christian Kolf, what could we expect? (Francesco Scarci – Translation by Sofia Lazani)

Folge Dem Wind - Inhale the Sacred Poison - English

#FOR FANS OF Black Avantgarde, Fleurety, Deathspell Omega
I would have to admit now that, France has become a forge for talented black metal bands; there is no use to deny the evidence, but Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, Alcest, Pensees Nocturne, Les Discrets (and thousands of others) all come from the country of the much hated cousins and even today I have to surrender before the clear superiority of those Folge Dem Wind and place them among the most talented bands from across the Alps. After having done this large introduction, I can also say that I have been following the quintet coming from the unknown Montgeron, since their debut EP, "Hail the Pagan Age", and since then the band have struck me for their dark and evil sound, which thus emerged more strongly in the first official release, but in my opinion, only with this remarkable "The Sacred Inhale Poison” reaches the peak of genius. And they do so from the beginning with the morbid title track which mounts through black sounds, avant-garde and psychotic influences, throws us into a whirlwind of insane madness with its 7 minutes and continues. With the following "... Of Blood & Ether", their music, while revealing the very dark black roots, leads us to walk through territory which is difficult to be explored by black groups. For sure we're not in front of the schizoid proposal of the Norwegian Fleurety or in front of the disruptive class of the aforementioned Deathspell Omega, but honestly some harmonic choices, some rhythmical dissonances, the constant presence of murky atmosphere (listen to "Grey Behind the Veil") and the search for intimate fragments, they merely confirm their enormous potential. We've already mentioned the third track, but I would to cite to you the wonderful prologue that has certainly little to do with metal music (who mentioned Jazz?) and this is precisely the winning point of Folge Dem Wind: they savagely attack us with their ruthless guitar riffs clearly of Nordic black origin and then in the complicated gait of the song, they know how to drive in the dark mazes of their sick mind, with accomplices also the heartrending vocals of Kilvaras. I want to make a further introduction to you: "The Sacred Inhale Poison" is not a work of immediate assimilation, you will definitely need various diverse hearings to be able to assimilate it, to be able to appreciate it, but when your ears will get used to it, it will be very difficult to do without it, because it has that quid, the characteristic that only big band capable of daring what no one else dares, able to create something lasting and I am convinced that they have these features. Exceptional song "…Of Reptilian Fires", that in itself, contains all the refined elegance of brutality and experimentation, and the ineffable simplicity in handling long pieces with great ease. The release spins with pleasure between dazed guitar lines, inhuman scream, post metal inserts, fragments of crazy jazz, becoming the joy of those who, like me, are in constant and frantic search of sounds beyond the common and those like the ones by Folge Dem Wind, surely contain something magical, esoteric, dreamy and deeply evil. Seducing! (Francesco Scarci – Translation by Sofia Lazani)
