Opeth - Watershed

#FOR FANS OF: Prog Death
This is one HEAVY Opeth release. There's more aggression here alongside some bolstering riff-dynamics which are intriguing. Mikael said that he's "also a genius when it comes to music" and I'd have to agree up until they changed from progressive metal to progressive rock. They should've not sold out because my contention is that they lost some true fans. But anyway, 'Watershed' some call "disjointed" but I say on here highly experimental. When they belt out heavy riff, that's something to admire and bang your head to. Although I like older Opeth more meaning 'Blackwater Park' and 'Still Life', 'Watershed' still has it's moments of precision.

Mikael's vocals are way aggressive on here. It's way on the progressive scale, but I find more brilliance the more that I listen to it. It's not as catchy as the two albums I mentioned, but I still think that its diversity and ingenuity is still there. They are just changing a little bit of styles here on the guitars and vocals. Some things sound a little backwards, but that's because I think that this is one of their more experimental efforts to date. And because of this, I took some points off, not because of the direction, but because of the sounds from the guitar aren't as creative as past works in any respect. One that I haven't mentioned that's my favorite of all-time is 'My Arms, Your Hearse'.

A lot of the tracks are all over the place, but the sound quality is still top notch. I enjoyed the clean guitars and the solemn vocals. But they needed a little bit more grit to the songs to bring the ideas together. Mikael falls a little short of his "genius" here probably because he wants to tend the band into a different direction. This being one of the albums that remains to be maintained before their fall from the metal community. They just show that they were heading this direction. I've found sort of just a select few songs that I can follow and some of the progressive rock sound meshed into this release. It doesn't help that Mikael doesn't like to sing brutal vocals.

In summary, this is a decent effort by the band. But for me, it's just a "70" rating. The songwriting on here was a bit "off" and hard to swallow. I'm not saying that it's their worst release, I'm just saying that it needed some work. Songs don't seem to flow in tandem like they did on their older releases. Well, this is it, hello to the progressive rock that follows a band that had some great talent to just throw it away. I guess Mikael just lost the fire and turned to another direction with the band just to sell records. He could've put more energy into this release and showed us that Opeth's metal days would go on till the end. (Death8699)

Opeth - Blackwater Park

#FOR FANS OF: Prog Death
This album is a bit heavier than 'Still Life' though it features more diversity (piano). But it is also a bit heavier than their predecessor. The music varies a lot here. Hence the progressive metal effort. It's a shame that the band stopped playing metal and swayed to progressive rock. But at least we can appreciate their older music than what's now that they are dishing out. The music and the vocals are the best parts of the album. The length of the album is another one that exceeds 60 minutes. They really were a talented progressive metal band. I'm not in the liking of how they changed, but like I said, their old stuff is their best stuff.

The metal and tough sound permeates throughout this album. But they do a good job with taking a break from the heavy guitar bits to settle down with clean guitars and vocals. Mikael uttered that he hates the deep throat on songs, but it's still good to have. It could be another reason why they're a rock band now. I like the old stuff only, 'Heritage' is not for me, sorry. The music on here is fantastic. They really don't include much lead guitar riffs, just acoustic guitars and clean tone riffs. But it constantly fluctuates. I like it when they put forth the metal in the songs. It takes me aback, but it's also good to hear them always changing it up.

I like the music and vocals the most, they can do without some things though most of it is appropriate here in making this a dominating album. I like the deep vocals, the clean is a good change up however. I wouldn't really change anything on here, the music is just amazing. It's the riffs that do it for me. The bar chords and that mixed with the clean is well-done. The fluctuation always keeps you guessing. They don't seem to run out of ideas on here. The music just flows and the thickness in the chunky guitar is spellbinding. I like the clean stuff too, it's good for a change. Sometimes it's difficult to hear only heavy shit.

I would say that every song on here is worthwhile, nothing on here misses a bit. I would say this is one of the best Opeth releases in the early 2000 era. But just how they changed made me pause. As long as they keep it to music that is progressive metal, then good. But that's not going to happen again, at least that is my prediction. They put in their bit in the metal world, onto the next chapter. I like this one entirely, as I said, nothing that needs a change on here. I like the clean a lot on here. Both the vocals and guitar, it sounds really amazing. But once the heavy guitar bits come forth, then the destruction of your eardrums.

I venture to say if you still have a CD player, buy the physical copy of the album! Show support for metal music! This one is another great chapter in metal history. It's not that you necessarily have to like the band members to respect what they have done for the metal world over the years in their career in music. They still need your support for ongoing the next chapter in their career. Check this one out, you'll hear a great many things worthwhile and experimental. The heavy and clean are both wicked, and they show their talent for mixing these two aspects into a great many compositions. Own it if you don't already! (Death8699)

Opeth - Still Life

#FOR FANS OF: Prog Death
This is one of my favorites from this band, till they took a dive into progressive rock now. This one, 'My Arms, Your Hearse' as well as 'Blackwater Park', are my favorites. 'Watershed' (to me) is just OK. Really experimental, but alright. So here, we have unrelenting progressive metal. The riffs are outstanding. It’s great to appreciate this progressive metal album. And I do also Opeth's older music. The guitars are my favorite here, just unrelentingly good and fresh riffs. They seem to interchange quite a bit, but that’s the glory of progressive metal. The fact that tempos can just come out of nowhere and just hit you, bam! Heavy guitars and vocals again! It’s really unique. The songs are lengthy on here too, which is good.

As I’ve said, the music fluctuates between heavy and clean guitar work, but it's quality and wholly original. Everything about this band is fresh AND original. The vocals are amazing, too. I liked everything about this release. I thought it to be flawless. In every aspect, just flawless. The music is what steals the listener to it wanting to hear more. And the hoarse then clean vocals (not in order). I like the production quality as well. The mixing and sound is filled with precision, I felt that this is one of the best produced Opeth album in the 90's era of the band. Newer stuff, OK but now it's progressive rock, not metal. It’s amazing how the band just seemed to change to rock.

The effects on here are cool, and the acoustics are quite good. The melodies on this whole album are just amazing. Both heavy and clean. We sort of knew that the path would eventually become different, but that’s alright. I think this album’s music is resoundingly superb. They stole that year (1999) with this release. I really think that the best ones (to me) are the few that I mentioned previously. But there other albums, just not the rock ones are still OK. I like the clean guitar and the heavy guitar. Both are very intricate. The music is what makes this album be what it is – a MONUMENT. The Opeth of the 90’s and early 2000’s are their best.

What I think is the most spellbinding are the guitars. The riffs are wholly original as is are the vocals. They fit the music perfectly. And you cannot help but enjoy the flipside from in your face destruction to an almost ballad-like poles. It’s as if the tempos changes are highly polarized. That’s why people like their old stuff, at least the metalhead crowds. I liked Opeth pretty much right away when I first heard them. It was a shock to the system. They were just highly original and unique. That’s why I still respect their older work. Getting to the new stuff as a metalhead it’s just not there. I’ll stay in respect to the old stuff.

Show support for their music, maybe not so much the band anymore, just their earlier work. They deserve it. It’s possible to like the band a lot just not so much the members. I have utmost respect for this band and if you choose to get the CD upon reading this review, go for it! It’s not on my Spotify, just CD. But I believe they may have it on Bandcamp and the CD is still available through various avenues. I will continue to listen to the older material, the reason why is to keep their spirit alive in the metal community! They were once really great! The work of old Opeth will be a treasured remain. Older Opeth is dead, long live old Opeth! (Death8699)
