Officium Triste - Hortus Venenum

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Doom

The Dutch veterans Officum Triste are for sure one of the most relevant projects in the doom metal scene. Founded 30 years ago, these veterans have a career full of great albums, although they haven’t been particularly prolific. But you know, it’s always clever to focus on quality rather than on quantity, and Officium Triste has followed this rule with a devoted constancy. As you probably imagine, there have been some line-up changes through its three decades of existence, although less than you could think. More importantly, a core trio remains since its inception, which probably explains how this band maintains its recognizable classic sound. This could be a bad thing if the inspiration drops, but thankfully Officium Triste has kept the passion alive, which is something remarkable.

Its combination of death and doom metal influences, with a strong atmospheric touch, has always been very appealing to me as this ambience enhances the beauty of its melodies. The new opus entitled 'Hortus Venenum' is not an exception. The balance between atmosphere and tasteful guitar melodies is again impeccable. Firstly, the production is just perfect, it’s equally clean and powerful, leaving each musician, including the always robust vocals, to shine when necessary. Structurally, the compositions don’t differ too much in its peace, a quite unsurprising fact if we have in mind that doom/death metal is not a subgenre known for its incredible tempo changes. In any case, the songs don’t sound absolutely monotonous as the band tries to add small variations in each composition. You can appreciate this effort between the first track, "Behind Closed Doors", and the second one entitled "My Poison Garden". The intense album opener contains everything you expect and love from Officium Triste. The guitar harmonies are top-notch. Their beauty is undeniable and combined with the piano/key arrangements the captivating moments come one after the other. Creating mesmerizing moments is something Officiam Triste can do as many times as they want, which speaks volumes about the band’s talent and passion. The initial part of "Anna’s Woe" is a fine example of it, with this marvelous ambient section led by delicate guitar and piano melodies. The rest of the album follows similar patterns and quality level, which makes the listener fully enjoy the experience. The album itself is not long at all, as it clocks around 41 minutes. The way you end an album is always a key moment, as it lets the listener with a lasting taste of the band’s work. Once again, the Dutch veterans know how to do the job properly. The last and longest piece, "Angels With Broken Wings", is a magnificently crafted composition with tons of exquisite melodies. It’s a remarkably slow song, but it shouldn’t be a problem for the accustomed listener, as the aforementioned melodies are a delicatessen of sonic nourishment for the listener.

In conclusion, Officium Triste has returned with a truly excellent new album. The greatness of its melodies and atmosphere clearly shows the amount of effort put by the band, and it is for sure a gift for its numerous fans. (Alain González Artola)

Grave Sermon - Liturgical Perversions

Se siete alla ricerca di suoni devastanti, vi trovate nel posto giusto. Il nuovo EP degli irlandesi Grave Sermon, intitolato 'Liturgical Perversions', offre un'esperienza sonora che vi colpirà come un pugno dritto in pieno petto. Rispetto al loro debutto nel 2019, 'Whitewashed Tomb', non ci sono grandi deviazioni nello stile, ma è evidente un salto in avanti in termini di registrazione, pulizia e potenza, che mette in risalto la violenza del quintetto (spaventosa a tal proposito, la prova alle pelli di Jason Connolly, ex Abaddon Incarnate). La traccia di apertura, "This Mortal Disease", è particolarmente convincente nonostante non presenti una grande dose di originalità, richiamando inevitabilmente i suoni dei Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower e Suffocation.Tuttavia, l'energia impetuosa si arricchisce di un pizzico di groove nelle linee di chitarra di "Preordained", suoni che ammiccano ancora di più all'angelo morboso, grazie a quel suo rutilante lavoro alla batteria e qualche giochino alla chitarra, senza scordarsi della performance vocale, che si muove in bilico tra screaming e growl. In "Vial of Wrath", la band continua a imbastire intricate trame ritmiche, grazie anche al drumming magistrale che rappresenta il fiore all'occhiello di un gruppo che rischierebbe altrimenti di essere etichettato come banale. Bene ma non benissimo quindi, fosse altro che quel basso introduttivo alla Metallica (di "My Friend of Misery") che apre l'ultima vorticosa "An Unfathomable Pact", ci offra un altro, l'ultimo, emozionante giro sulle montagne russe, anzi irlandesi, targate Grave Sermon. Mekigah - To Hold Onto A Heartless Heart

#PER CHI AMA: Drone/Ambient/Experimental

Ho recensito tutti gli album degli australiani Mekigah, seguendo da vicino l'evoluzione sonora di Vis Ortis, partendo dagli esordi dark gothic di 'The Serpent's Kiss', attraversando la fase death doom, fino ad arrivare alle ultime derive dronico-avanguardistiche dell'ultimo uscito 'Autexousious'. Un percorso assai complesso quello del mastermind di Melbourne, che con questo 'To Hold Onto a Heartless Heart', taglia il traguardo del quinto album. Una miscela sonora quella contenuta nelle sei tracce di questa release, come sempre parecchio ostica da digerire, che si dipana dalle atmosfere sinistre della lunghissima song posta in apertura. "Collapsing Under" dura infatti oltre 14 minuti, costituiti da suoni complessi, infausti e disomogenei, che spaziano con una certa disinvoltura dal drone all'ambient, passando per suoni tribali, noise, funeral e quant'altro di sperimentale possiate immaginare, il tutto accompagnato da un cantato in screaming in sottofondo, che evoca riti sciamanici o litaniche possessioni. Come immaginavo, nulla di quanto ascolterete qui è di facile ascolto, nemmeno la seconda "Broken Rhythm Pressure", che sembra debuttare più teneramente rispetto all'opener, ma presto si immerge in sonorità orrorifiche, affidandosi a suoni stralunati, vocals ingarbugliate, atmosfere tra il rarefatto e il rumoristico, e consegnandoci di fatto, un altro brano assai malato e angosciante, che richiede una grande fermezza d'animo per essere affrontato e non rischiare la pazzia. Se poi siete degli audaci, beh, allora potrete continuare a vivere il delirio musicale servito dal factotum australiano, passando attraverso la sghemba e alienante "Away Drifting From", più easy-listening delle precedenti, ma non per questo, di meno complicato ascolto. Le atmosfere continuano a mantenere contorni agghiaccianti, complice lo stridolio vocale del frontman e un incedere apocalittico che permea il disco nella sua interezza. Un cantico sirenesco sembrerà ammaliarvi nella più breve "An Infinitesimal Difference", ma fate attenzione a lasciarvi sedurre da quei suoi quasi gentili suoni, che lasceranno ben presto il posto alla marziale glacialità della sua coda noisy che sfocerà nelle derive infernali di "It Hisses So", un brano che potrebbe mischiare l'approccio danzereccio degli Hocico con la depravazione sonora degli Aevangelist, ma rallentato e amplificato rispetto alla violenta furia della band finlandese. Chi avrà la forza di arrivare sino in fondo, troverà "Eyes Glazed Over", l'ultima strenua prova di sopravvivenza offerta da quest'album; già vi avverto che non sarà affatto semplice, data la natura ipnotica, stridente e dissonante del brano che potrebbe condurre definitivamente alla follia. Pensavo che l'effetto sorpresa si fosse esaurito, ma mi sbagliavo, il buon Vis Ortis ha ancora molto da offrire. (Francesco Scarci)

Midnight Odyssey - Closer to The Sky

The Australian project Midnight Odyssey is, for sure, one of the most respected projects in the atmospheric black metal scene. Dis Pater’s solo project has a unique approach to the genre, achieving an admirable masterfulness when we talk about creating captivating atmospheres. The project was founded back in 2007 and since then, Midnight Odyssey has released a good number of albums, showing that Dis Pater has never run out of ideas. Apart from the strong atmospheric approach, another characteristic of this project, has been that the compositions, and as a result, the albums themselves, are very long. This aspect has delighted some of his fans, while other fans of the genre complained that some albums could sound more focused if the length of the tracks would be shorter. Although I personally prefer shorter albums, I can’t deny the fact that I have enjoyed vastly lengthy albums like 'Shards of Silver Fade', for example. In any case, when Dis Pater has reduced a bit the length and has gone straight to the point, the result has been absolutely phenomenal. 'Biolume Part 1- In Tartarean Chains' was a clear example of it. Don’t get me wrong, the songs continue to be long, and the album lasts an hour, but in contrast to other lengthier albums, that opus can more easily be enjoyed if you are not a die-hard fan.

 

Taking into account the issue of the length, I was very curious to check out Midnight Odyssey’s latest output, an EP entitled 'Closer to the Sky'. This new opus contains four tracks and lasts less than 35 minutes. I can safely say that any fan of the project will be exultant with the result. These four tracks contain all the characteristics that have made this project so loved. Each song has its own personality and specific details. The EP opener, "Souls Left Wandering", is the heaviest track of the EP. The composition sounds powerful as it combines some tempo changes in a masterful way. The keys play an important role as always, but they share the job with the guitars and the always present powerful vocals of Dis Pater. If someone is a newcomer to the project’s music, this piece would be a nice one to discover what it can offer. The solemn ambience, a characteristic of Midnight Odyssey, becomes even more magnificent in the following track, entitled "Lightning Fall". Just listen to the intro, and you will immediately feel mesmerized by the grandeur of Dis Pater’s talent with the keyboards. As majesty domains the full track, the pace is slower, but I can assure that you won’t get bored if you like this kind of music. "Closer to The Sky" is another beautiful composition which includes the already known clean vocals of Dis Pater, which I personally enjoy quite a lot. The work behind to create delicate and beautiful melodies is excellent as always. If I should complain about something, I would maybe mention that a heavier track would have been a good idea, based on the fact that the last track, entitled "Awakening", is a pure ambient one. If you want to achieve a perfect balance between the more aggressive compositions and the most atmospheric ones, it would have been a good idea to include a track with a more vivid pace.

 

All in all, and even taking into consideration this minor complaint, 'Closer to the Sky' is an excellent work by Midnight Odyssey. The achieved quality creating captivating atmospheres is top-notch again, and I am sure that it will please the fans of the genre. (Alain González Artola)

Love Lies Bleeding - Ex Nihilo

Ex nihilo nihil fit... A parere dell’etichetta, il genere praticato dai francesi Love Lies Bleeding andrebbe catalogato come black metal sinfonico. Effettivamente, le tastiere disegnano in taluni, brevi passaggi, trame melodiche dal sapore classicheggiante, ma esse lasciano immediatamente il posto all’infuriare della batteria e alle sventagliate di chitarra, a cui il black metal ci ha abituati. E queste cacofonie finiscono col risultare stucchevoli. Qualcuno forse giudicherà i brani di 'Ex Nihilo' dei capolavori di oscurità. Tutto può essere e i gusti non si discutono. Rimane il fatto, che certi concetti musicali sono già stati espressi, anni fa, da Emperor e Limbonic Art. Chi desidera riassaporare quel genere di sonorità e di atmosfere, non sarà certo deluso dall'album dei Love Lies Bleeding.

#PER CHI AMA: Melo Death

La Finlandia è da sempre una fucina di gruppi dotati di talento. Vogliamo citarne alcuni? Finntroll, Amorphis, Lost in Tears e Throes Of Dawn. A cui avremmo potuto aggiungere anche il sestetto dei Divercia (ex Lost In Twilight), se non si fossero sciolti prematuramente. Benissimo fece la Hammerheart a produrre 'Modus Operandi'. Album come questo, pur senza far gridare al miracolo, restituiscono fiducia nelle capacità di rigenerazione del metal. La via percorsa dalla band non è quella della sperimentazione, ed è plausibile ritenere che non rientrasse fra gli scopi dei Divercia quello di essere degli innovatori. Rimane il fatto che la buona musica, anche se non è innovativa, è pur sempre piacevole da ascoltare. E i nostri finlandesi riuscirono effettivamente a disegnare delle gradevoli trame melodiche. Non tutti, chiaramente, potranno gradire l’impostazione vocale di Jyri Aarniva, dalle tonalità marcatamente soft, fin troppo sommesse. È fuori di dubbio che un’interpretazione più energica avrebbe dato migliori risultati. Provate a pensare a una via di mezzo tra la timbrica pulita di Aaron (My Dying Bride) e Phred (Jack Frost), e avrete un’idea dello stile di Jyri. Francamente, sembra che canti in stato di trance ipnotica. Alla musica dei Divercia non fanno difetto né la melodia, merito delle tastiere, né la potenza. Pur raccomandandovi di saggiare preliminarmente l’album, sento di poterne consigliare l’ascolto.
