#PER CHI AMA: Instrumental Cinematic Eastern Metal

'Gods Of Nibbirus Vol.2' è una nuova compilation interamente strumentale, la seconda dopo quella del 2019, firmata Akhenaten, stravagante progetto di metal dalle fortissime influenze mediorientali, originario di Manitou Springs (Colorado). Il sound della band dovrebbe avere una base black/death, arricchita da influenze folk mediorientali, ma qui sono quest'ultime coadiuvate da suggestioni cinematiche a prendersi la scena. Eppure, i nostri si sono costruiti una solida reputazione nella scena con tre dischi estremi, cantati e ben suonati. Ma torniamo al presente: forti di una produzione nitida e teatrale, dotata peraltro di atmosfere epiche e magniloquenti, il duo statunitense si diletta a proporci egregie orchestrazioni che assumono i connotati di colonna sonora da film colossal. Chiaro, io personalmente, li preferisco quando c'è un bello screaming a narrare di occultismo, teorie cospirative o mitologia egizia, ma è innegabile come il tono solenne dell'opener "Anunnaki Requiem" sia colmo di una certa tensione mitologica, impostando un tono epico e misterioso sin dall'inizio. O ancora, come la seconda "Echos of the Celestial Architects" mostri un'atmosfera sospesa, grazie a una costruzione lenta, ma evocativa, che lascerà un forte senso di maestosità. I pezzi si susseguono con questo piglio visionario, cinematografico, potente e soprattutto immersivo, che ci proietterà per oltre 60 minuti, in altri mondi e tempi dell'universo. (Francesco Scarci)

Fïnnr’s Cane - S/t

#FOR FANS OF: Atmospheric Black

The Canadian project Finnr’s Cane is definitely an original one. Firstly, although its core influence is atmospheric black metal, this band transcends boundaries between genres by incorporating influences from doom, folk, and post-metal, achieving a unique result. Furthermore, there is no proper bass guitar; instead, they use a cello and keys to create a distinctive and mournful layer that helps to shape this project’s sound.

With the aforementioned ingredients, Finnr’s Cane has released some interesting albums, taking its time to release each of them. This is no exception with the self-titled new opus, which sees the light of day seven years after their previous effort entitled 'Elegy.' The new album goes further in the distinguishable mixture of influences that has defined Finnr’s Cane’s career. It is almost impossible to limit them to a single genre, and this self-titled album won’t make things easier. An increasingly distant atmospheric black metal influence is enriched with many doom metal influences and folk touches. The vocals are also one of the most distinctive elements of this album; with a few exceptions where they sound more aggressive, they are generally clean and mournful, usually in the form of a plaintive chorus or an individual voice. I personally like this use as an occasional resource, as it enhances the sad feeling, but I would incorporate more aggressive vocals as a contrast to the melodies created by the instruments. Pace-wise, the album focuses on mid and slow tempo sections, although variety is also a key element, and faster sections are included throughout the different compositions. The cello and keys form the core sound of this album, and they are indispensable. The most memorable melodies are created by these instruments, as they help to forge the melancholic atmosphere that envelops the entire effort. The second track, "Twilight Glow," is a fine example of saddening yet beautiful melodies.

"The Everwinter Grey" is one of my favorite tracks, with the cello opening the piece with a truly mournful melody. The composition has an even stronger atmospheric touch and varied structure, where typically slow doom metal sections are combined with fast ones, while always maintaining a gloomy feeling. The album closer, "Harvest," is another strong moment on this album. It contains some beautiful melodies and is probably one of the most melancholic tracks, with the cello playing a major role alongside these post-folk influences.

'Finnr’s Cane' is definitely a very personal album and one that will satisfy the appetite for a mixture of genres where melancholy and introspection reign. I personally would prefer a different approach to the vocals, but I always appreciate the effort to create something true to the artist’s musical vision. Another positive aspect, at least in my case, is that the album improves with further listens, which is always a good conclusion. (Alain González Artola)

Inhuman Condition - Mind Trap

#FOR FANS OF: Death/Thrash

This is the third full-length disc I’ve purchased from the band. I picked up 'Rat God' (2021) and 'Fearsick' (2022), their previous two releases, and they were absolute gems! This new release I feel gets a solid “75” as it is consistent throughout musically, but the recording quality is not the greatest. You kind of have to crank the stereo to get it audible; nevertheless, the riffs/vocals/drums are all solid. Some songs have their own unique catch to them. This band doesn’t play with super fast tempos, their music lies within the death/thrash metal mix. I’ve been aware that since their first was released in 2021. Musically, they sort combine the heaviness of bands say like Obituary (hence, Terry’s main band) and the thrash-like essence of say Megadeth, reminiscent of their 'Countdown to Extinction' (1992) release, be it the riffs and tempos ranging from slower to moderate and again not going super fast.

The vocals are an acquired taste and their sound overall tends to be a little “flat” on the recording, just the riffs are quite good in general. I’d say that the music reflects more of a death metal band and not so much a thrash metal one. In any case, I’m forever a fan! They’ve got this sort of “groove” to their music, not necessarily groove metal, but a beat or vibe that’s easy to get into. Their music is HEAVY, but it’s not necessarily “dark” by any means. The lyrics might be, but not so much any of the songs.

Nine songs here total, clocking in at about 31 minutes in length. They all collectively good, but if I would choose at least two to check out first, maybe: "The Betterment Plan" or "Chaos Engine." Check out either of those songs; especially if you have no idea what exactly to look for with this band. No surprise that they’re solely Florida based, so many death metal bands have come out there date back to the later 80s! And I was not aware of this, but their guitar player Taylor Nordberg is also in Deicide, among others. It seems that all the members are in other bands, however.

Enjoy this, especially if these examples of whom their styles reflect yours and are on your radar! (Death8699)

The Ravenous - Assembled in Blasphemy

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

#PER CHI AMA: Death/Horror

Rozzi, brutali, marci. Tutti questi aggettivi dovrebbero rendere l’idea di quello che sono i The Ravenous. Il cast che compone questo gruppo ha una sua rilevanza nel panorama musicale: Chris Reifert (Autopsy), Killjoy (R.I.P., ex Necrophagia) e Dan Lilker (ex Brutal Truth, S.O.D., Anthrax e tante altre band). Bene, questi folli (è il caso di dirlo) hanno composto un album fatto da riff di chitarra semplici e malati dove la registrazione è volutamente grezza, e con queste peculiarità sin qui esposte, trovo anche delle forti somiglianze con i Necrophagia (complice la voce del frontman). Nei brani dei The Ravenous si possono ascoltare parti tipicamente death senza disdegnare sfuriate black. La voce di Killjoy è furibonda e indemoniata, mai doma, sempre in continuo cambiamento per tutta la durata dell’album. I testi sono di chiara ispirazione splatter-gore, chiaramente un tutt’uno con la splendida copertina veramente realistica e vomitevole. Per chi ama le emozioni forti.

Kim Gordon & Loren Connors

#PER CHI AMA: Ambient/Drone/Noise

Nell'abbrivio ("Movement 1") metem-psychotico sono esplicitate le istanze atomistiche del concept, qualcosa che ritorna ancora ("Movement 3") e ancora ("Movement 4") e ancora (esatto, "Movement 5"). Un acronico e sonnolento climax eiaculatorio e immensamente diffratto ("Movement 2"). Barriti, immanenza, la voce di Kim, una sofferenza atonica, atonale, ancestrale (di nuovo "Movement 5") che diventa attesa dolorosa e ribollente ("Movement 6"). E poi la sospensione molecolare del cosmo intero, ora ("Movement 7"), e ancora ("Movement 8"), nell'attesa vana sebbene inesorabile, sedicentemente catartica, dell'apocalisse western-sonica prossima ventura (di nuovo "Movement 8"). Fotografia sgranata, le luci servono solo per i profili. Fumo. Kim Gordon backwoman e Loren Connors bluesman shoegazer, distillano su vinile i migliori trentasette minuti estratti da una nota improvvisazione della durata complessiva di oltre un'ora e mezza datata dicembre 2014 all'Issue Project Room di New York. Below the Sun - Immanence

#PER CHI AMA: Post Metal

Che fastidio che il nuovo album dei Below the Sun, sia rimasto in forma digitale. Sebbene discogs riveli che esista una release fisica, io di tracce nel web di quel formato, non ne ho trovate. 'Immanence' comunque è il nuovo viaggio musicale profondo e introspettivo del duo di Krasnoyarsk, che esplora tematiche esistenziali attraverso sonorità avvolgenti e atmosferiche. Con questo nuovo lavoro, la band prosegue nel costruire il proprio sound distintivo, mescolando elementi di post-metal, doom e ambient, sfoggiando sei nuovi pezzi che prendono alla gola sin dalle note iniziali dell'intimistica "Instinct", che si muove all'altezza di un bivio tra sonorità sludge e post metal. Quest'ultime che si prendono la scena nella successiva "Restraint", un brano in bilico tra pesantezza e melodia, un equilibrio sofferto tra il post rock iniziale e l'asfissiante doom che si palesa a metà brano, con le vocals che da growl passano a un pulito emozionante in un crescendo emotivo (e musicale), che lascia quasi senza parole. Un clamoroso passo in avanti rispetto al vecchio disco 'Alien World', ormai datato 2017, una maturità acquisita che potrebbe rendere i Below the Sun significativi almeno quanto i Rosetta, per non dire anche qualcosa di più. Il che si conferma anche nella cerebrale e distorsiva potenza di "Being" o nell'essenziale musicalità di "Beholder", un pezzo più sperimentale ed etereo che avvicina i nostri a una band come gli Explosions in the Sky, in un'architettura sonora ben più morbida rispetto agli altri brani (fatto salvo per la strumentale "Illumination"), ma dotata comunque di una raffinatezza e un approccio onirico di un certo livello. "Revelation" è la traccia di chiusura, una specie di epopea progressive shoegaze che combina riff lenti, clean vocals e orpelli vari che avvicinano i Below the Sun a territori probabilmente mai esplorati. Il brano inizia in modo soft, con vocalizzi appunto shoegaze e un crescendo che culmina in un finale maestoso, a sancire quanto realmente sia interessante questo disco e quanto mi continuino a girare le scatole per non averlo ancora trovato in un formato fisico. Ereb Altor - Hälsingemörker

#PER CHI AMA: Viking/Epic

'Hälsingemörker', l'ultima epica creazione degli Ereb Altor, trascina l'ascoltatore in un viaggio attraverso paesaggi sonori maestosi, dove regnano atmosfere cupe e ancestrali echi della mitologia nordica. La leggendaria band svedese, maestra nell'arte di fondere viking metal e doom in un'unica, possente visione, forgia ancora una volta un universo musicale di rara potenza e complessità. Fin dalle prime, folgoranti note di "Valkyrian Fate", si percepisce l'intensità titanica con cui il gruppo scandaglia i misteri più profondi della natura e delle saghe norrene. Gli intrecci di melodie epiche e riff devastanti creano una cattedrale sonora monumentale, sublimata dalla voce cristallina e potente di Mats, sostenuta da cori che evocano gli spiriti degli antichi guerrieri. La sua performance vocale è un'autentica epifania: attraversa l'intero spettro emotivo umano, regalando momenti di connessione mistica che toccano l'anima. La produzione raggiunge vette di eccellenza assoluta, scolpendo ogni singolo strumento con precisione chirurgica, senza mai sacrificare quell'aura greve e atmosferica che avvolge l'intero capolavoro come una nebbia ancestrale. I brani si dispiegano in un equilibrio perfetto tra passaggi melodici di struggente bellezza e sequenze frenetiche che scatenano tempeste sonore, mantenendo l'ascoltatore in uno stato di costante, elettrizzante tensione. Tra le gemme di questo tesoro musicale, brillano la già citata, gloriosa opener, la misteriosa "Vi är Mörkret" e la travolgente "Träldom": tutte forgiate con ritmiche possenti avvolte da un misticismo epico che fa tremare le fondamenta di Midgard. "Ättestupan" introduce invece una tonalità più malinconica e solenne, offrendo un momento di pausa riflessiva dove l'anima può contemplare l'infinito, mentre "The Waves, the Sky and the Pyre" sembra addirittura pervasa da un'aura di sacralità primordiale. 'Hälsingemörker' si erge come monumento definitivo al talento sovrumano degli Ereb Altor: un'opera che conquisterà non solo i devoti seguaci della band e i cultori del genere, ma anche nuovi esploratori in cerca di sonorità epiche capaci di trasportare l'anima in regni inesplorati. La loro capacità di incarnare e far rivivere l'essenza più pura della cultura viking metal rimane leggendaria e ineguagliabile, consacrandoli definitivamente come i supremi maestri di questo stile immortale.
