LLNN/Sugar Horse - The Horror/Sleep Paralysis Demon EP

#PER CHI AMA: Sludge/Experimental

Una volta si facevano gli split album, oggi il minimalismo sonoro è arrivato addirittura a uno split 7": una canzone per uno quindi, cosi che i danesi LLNN e gli inglesi Sugar Horse, sono accontentati, e con loro, tutti i fan delle due band targate Pelagic Records. Si parte con gli LLNN e la loro "The Horror", un trip sonico all'insegna di un sound ambient-ritualistico, che riesce a sfociare in sonorità che parafrasano il titolo del brano, cosi orrorifiche e angoscianti, con l'arcigna voce affidata a Martin Skou guerriero live dei folksters Heilung. La proposta è davvero intrigante, con un sonicscape electro-industrialoide inquietante al massimo, affidato a suoni freddi e sintetici. Quando arriva la band di Bristol, è quasi un toccasana per le mie orecchi, vista una proposta qui virante a un post punk dissonante. Ecco infatti come si presenta "Sleep Paralysis Demon" sin dalle sue strambe e oblique note introduttive, con una voce pulita che lascerà presto il posto a lancinanti grida hardcore e al ringhiare delle chitarre, che arrivano a sprofondare successivamente nei meandri di uno sludge melmoso e altrettanto sghembo e disturbante, che proverà a insediare quei pochi neuroni residui del mio cervello. Anche qui la proposta è piuttosto particolare e alla fine devo ammettere, che avrei voluto ascoltare di più di entrambe le band. Speriamo pertanto che questo 7" sia il giusto antipasto per una portata di ben altra consistenza. (Francesco Scarci)

Nocternity - En Oria

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine 

#PER CHI AMA: Black Metal

Eccoci alla recensione di un piccolo capolavoro targato Nocternity, (all'epoca) giovane duo greco attivo e bellicoso. 'En Oria' è stato il loro primo album completo e anche prima uscita ufficiale, dato che si rifiutarono di pubblicare il loro unico demo per via di alcuni casini successi con degli ex membri della precedente line-up. Questo album rappresenta per me una sorta di nuova rinascita del black metal greco indirizzato verso altri lidi e soluzioni. Infatti, i Nocternity non sono l’ennesima band clone dei maestri Rotting Christ, ma fanno storia a sè molto particolare, inglobando sì le classiche influenze di bands greche come i Rotting Christ stessi o Necromantia, ma anche influenze scandinave di band come Burzum o i seminali In The Woods. Il risultato finale è sorprendente, per il semplice fatto che la musica scorre senza intoppi e senza forzature sotto ogni punto di vista. Questi ragazzi a mio avviso sono i primi a esser stati in grado di fondere i due classici stili (molto diversi tra loro), riuscendo perfettamente ad amalgamarli al punto giusto... 'En Oria' è un album oscuro, freddo e abissale; i testi sono un concept sul mare e sulla sua potenza distruttiva, scritti peraltro molto bene, profondi e poetici. La produzione è curata, anche se mantenuta ruvida volutamente. Splendidi riffs, un'agghiacciante voce urlata, un'ottima sessione ritmica (eseguita da Lethe, batterista dei Septic Flesh, session per questo album) e ottimo anche l’intricato tappeto di tastiere, donano al tutto un che di maestoso ed epico. Per chi ancora non lo avesse capito, per me questo disco è un capolavoro assoluto che vale la pena di essere ascoltato. I Nocternity si avviavano cosi ad essere una delle migliori rivelazioni delle terre elleniche degli ultimi anni.

Zeal & Ardor - Hide in Shade

#PER CHI AMA: Avantgarde

In attesa di ascoltare il nuovo disco 'Grief', atteso per fine d'agosto, gli svizzero-statunitensi Zeal & Ardor ci danno in pasto un breve aperitivo, l'EP 'Hide in Shade'. Quattro pezzi, che saranno inclusi nell'imminente full length, utili per capire se la direzione stilistica della particolare band di stanza ora a New York, sia sempre quel connubio, da sempre vincente, di sonorità estreme unite a influenze afro-americane. E la title track (di cui è uscito anche un visualizer) posta in apertura, non fa altro che confermare l'attitudine avanguardista dell'ensemble, miscelando ritmiche estreme affiancate dal growling del frontman e partiture più morbide, con voci pulite e cori di chiara derivazione folk/gospel, con tanto di battito di mani a tenere il tempo. A me la proposta di Manuel Gagneux piace, per quanto mostri una vena un po' paracula e forse, stia un po' perdendo del cosiddetto effetto sorpresa. Tuttavia, i brani scorrono via veloci, pregni di ottime melodie, tanta ruffianeria (e "Fend You Off" potrebbe essere un esempio emblematico, comunque estremamente gradevole nella sua progressione, tra influenze alternative e di Devin Townsend memoria), una spettacolare performance canora, da sempre punto di forza del progetto, stralunate e angosciantissime derive sperimentali ("Clawing Out"), e una componente intimista ben accentuata, soprattutto nella conclusiva "To My Ilk". Insomma, un più che discreto antipastino, che però ora mi ha messo addosso una gran fame. (Francesco Scarci)

Griffar - Of Witches And Celts

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

Un lavoro difficile da digerire questo dei Griffar, che non è altro che la ristampa su CD del loro demo di debutto. Difficile da digerire perché si tratta di un disco di una quarantina di minuti composto da sole quattro lunghe tracce, un mattone non proprio leggero per lo stomaco. Il concept del disco è suddiviso in due sezioni: la prima, 'Chronicle of a Blazing Witchcraft' comprende i primi due pezzi "A Host in the Toad Candle" e "Ensnared by the Scareth Oath", mentre la seconda parte, 'The Celtic Spectre', racchiude le altre due tracce, "The Santuary of Cursed Warriors" e "Under The Sword Of The Seventh King". La band suona un black metal a tratti melodico, a tratti brutale e graffiante, farcito da keyboards e parti epiche. Purtroppo però, a mio parere, il CD risente troppo di una registrazione non proprio lusinghiera che fa perdere un bel po’ di impatto a (s)favore di parti che potevano rendere molto meglio, ma anche il songwriting e le idee dei nostri sono un po’ nella media. Troppi luoghi comuni. Da migliorare inoltre la sessione ritmica, non troppo precisa in alcuni punti. L’artwork a colori è molto curato e comprende inoltre tutti i testi (molto lunghi) con tutta la spiegazione del concept che si cela dietro. C'era da migliorare anche la durata delle songs, diluendone la lunghezza. Peccato solo che si siano sciolti.

Paradise In Flames - Blindness

#FOR FANS OF: Symph Black Metal

This time we cross the Atlantic Ocean to visit the always interesting Brazilian scene. Paradise In Flames is a band founded 21 years ago. The project has suffered several line-up changes, which may explain the big gap between the different releases. André Lui is the only remaining founding member, but thankfully he keeps the torch of the project alive. The new opus, entitled 'Blindness' even comes with the recent departure of the keyboard player and female singer O.Mortis. Fortunately, her work is present here, so we can still enjoy the full potential of Paradise In Flames.

As mentioned, 'Blindness' is the new effort, and it is definitely a fun album to listen to. Paradise In Flames plays black metal with a great presence of symphonic-style keyboards that make the band sound truly majestic. The production is well-balanced, clean, and gives room for the instruments to shine when needed. This is particularly well-achieved when keyboards appear, as you can still appreciate the guitars and powerful drums. This is the main point to achieve when you mix metal and symphonic elements, and I consider that Paradise In Flames gets the point perfectly well. The compositions themselves are short but very well-done, with abrupt tempo changes that sound natural and not forced. The album consists of eleven tracks, not lasting over forty minutes in total. This opus breathes power and symphonic greatness in each composition, with only a few calmer moments. In general, 'Blindness' is an album where compositions are speedy and very intense. There is no room for boredom, only for a relentless ride. From the actual album opener "Desolate" to the album closer "Angels Devils," this album is a pure beast. The first one, with its epic choir and female vocals combined with the furious riffing and smashing drums, and the latest one, where the band masterfully mixes black metal rage and metal vocals with delicate symphonic elements, show the potential of this new effort.

Tracks like "The Priest" and "Endless Night Battle" have a great room for mid-tempo sections, which is welcome, although they don't lack at all the intensity and energy generously found in this album. Boundless fury comes back with "War Sonata", another powerful composition that breathes energy in every note. The combination of tasteful pianos, different kinds of symphonic arrangements, and the black metal genre is once again exquisite. In particular, the fast section's riffing and drums accompanied by an equally speedy piano are top-notch. The amount and quality of the arrangements are overwhelming and clearly show the great amount of work done by the band.

'Blindness' is definitely a delight for symphonic black metal fans. Its intensity, majesty, and well-composed and produced compositions should garner attention within the scene. The album is a great listen and a pleasant surprise that increases in value with each new listen. (Alain González Artola)

Stormcrow - Hell on Earth

Talvolta l’apparenza e la sostanza coincidono. La confezione di 'Hell on Earth' era (e oggi ancor di più è) impeccabile, realmente professionale. La copertina originale riproduceva un particolare del magnifico dipinto di Pieter Bruegel il Vecchio, denominata 'Il Trionfo della Morte'. Quanto al contenuto musicale, esso consta di cinque brani di sanguigno black metal Marduk-oriented, registrati in modo eccellente. La title-track è semplicemente strepitosa, velocissima e coinvolgente: la prova lampante del fatto che gli Stormcrow davano (e danno) il meglio di sé quando volano a Mach 2.0. Benché l’influenza del combo svedese risulti qua e là palpabile, 'Hell on Earth' rappresentava già nel 2000, un prodotto di ottima qualità. E non c'entra nulla che sulle fanzine nostrane si sprecassero gli elogi nei confronti dei gruppi italiani, ma in questo caso, credetemi, andava reso onore al merito: gli Stormcrow hanno fatto centro al primo.

Ancient Guard - Nightfall Enthroned

#FOR FANS OF: Atmospheric Black Metal

Ancient Guard is a new project coming from Australia, led by the musician known as Nightwolf. From his various projects, Runespell is, by far, the most well-known. The aforementioned project has a very solid discography with five very interesting albums firmly rooted in the black metal genre. Based on this, it was interesting to see what he can offer with his new creation, which has caught the attention of the respected Iron Bonehead Productions, which is always something remarkable.

With Ancient Guard, Nightwolf doesn’t stray too far from the realms explored with Runespell, but this project is definitely a different monster. Ancient Guard clearly sounds more atmospheric in this EP debut entitled 'Nightfall Enthroned'. This initial effort consists of four pieces, three songs clocking in around 7 and 11 minutes, and a short piece that serves as an outro. You always want more, but these three compositions have more than enough to please the fans of the subgenre. Nightwolf leaves no room for doubt with the eleven-minute first track entitled "Dominion of Primordial Darkness". The title is cool and very fitting for the genre he explores here. This is a very interesting composition with strong pace changes and a great contrast between the furious and more blackish sections and the strongly atmospheric sections that dominate. The created ambiance sounds captivating and also a bit melancholic thanks to hypnotic guitar work. The mid-tempo sections of this track are particularly inspired and enjoyable. Ancient Guard’s mastermind seems to be comfortable with the most atmospheric and mid-paced compositions, as he masterfully shows in the song "Sepulchral Damnation", with a simple yet totally addictive melody that mesmerizes the listener. "A Moonscape Abyss" sounds more powerful in contrast, with a more energetic pace, although nothing that contrasts abruptly from the previous compositions. The atmospheric keys are the base, where the tasteful guitar work and Nightwolf’s raspy vocals reign. The riffing is again excellent and creates melodies that will satisfy fans of the genre for sure.

Debuting with an EP, especially if it is good, leaves you wanting more, but 'Nightfall Enthroned' is undoubtedly a very solid first step in the career of Ancient Guard. The elements found here, make this project interesting in the atmospheric black metal genre, and I hope that, sooner or later, a full-length album will come to confirm the potential of Nightfall's new endeavor.
