#PER CHI AMA: Black/Death

Poco più di due mesi fa recensivo 'П​р​о​б​у​ж​д​е​н​и​е' dei russi Drakon, loro full-length d'esordio. Ora, sulla mia scrivania arriva questo 'Р​е​ч​и в​ы​с​о​к​и​е', che potremmo tradurre in inglese come "The Speech is High". Non so a quale discorso il duo, formato da Veleyar e Demether Grail, faccia riferimento, ma per quanto concerne l'aspetto prettamente musicale, non vedo grossi scossoni stilistici rispetto al precedente album. Tre nuove tracce più due cover, di Unanimated ed Enslaved, a tastare il polso della situazione in casa Drakon. Si parte da "Промысл русского Рода", e da una vertiginosa ritmica black/death, su cui si staglia la voce del frontman russo. Chitarre taglienti in stile black svedese intaliano riff acuminati come rasoi, poi il terreno frana in un breve break atmosferico, per poi ripartire in un finale acidissimo. Nessuna peculiarità in questi primi quattro minuti, per poter dire che la proposta dei nostri sia del tutto originale. Ben suonata forse, ma per quel che riguarda la personalità, beh siamo lontani anni luce. La situazione prosegue anche nella successiva "Времяворот", che vede, come unica differenza, una più marcata ricerca di cambi di tempo, cosi come della presenza di cori ad affiancare il cantato gruignolesco del frontman. E ancora, una parvenza di assolo a stemperare la brutalità dell'act russo. "Бог войны" ha un sound più oscuro, assai ritmato e identificabile a cavallo tra il black norvegese e quello svedese, con una discreta dose di melodia ed un rifferama che si conferma compatto ed implacabile. Un altro break atmosferico a stemperare la furia del duo russo e non posso che apprezzare questa ricerca di diversificare i suoni di quello che potrebbe essere tranquillamente una copia del vecchio album. Arriva anche il momento delle cover: "Life Demise" degli Unanimated, da 'Ancient God of Evil' e "Fenris" degli Enslaved, addirittura da 'Frost', due mitici pezzi anni '90 riletti quasi fedelmente rispetto alle originali e che pertanto non spostano di molto il mio giudizio finale. Speriamo in un prossimo lavoro, che veda una maggiore ricercatezza in fatto di originalità, mentre per ora, mi trovo costretto a confermare il vecchio giudizio. (Francesco Scarci)

CRM - My Lunch

#PER CHI AMA: Electro/Post Psych Punk

CRM non è un nuovo ufficio deputato a chissà quale burocratica mansione, ma è l'acronimo per i romani Customer Relationship Madness che tornano con un nuovo album, 'My Lunch'. La proposta del quartetto si muove su coordinate stilistiche che, già dall'iniziale "Interference", strizzano l'occhiolino all'elettronica, per ciò che concerne la base ritmica, al dark/post-punk di "curiana" memoria, per ciò che riguarda la voce e lo psych rock, in fatto di solismi. Un approccio stilistico che mi mette subito a mio agio, mi rilassa e induce a immergermi con maggiore consapevolezza nel suono dilatato dei nostri, che vedono nel finale anche la presenza di una voce femminile (Elisabetta Caiani) a sublimare il tutto. "Buy" non fa che confermare le parole spese per l'opening track, con un sound energico, che ammicca sicuramente a destra e a manca al post punk, ma che comunque sconfina in altri generi, garage rock, elettronica, alternative e sperimentalismi sonori che potrebbero evocare addirittura il Duca Bianco (e se non sapete chi è, andatevelo a cercare). Ancor più spiazzanti le sonorità psych/space rock incluse in "Alone", complice l'uso massivo di synth, theremin e dronin, senza tralasciare un ipnotico basso in sottofondo che ne guida l'ascolto, ed un feeling che, per certi versi, potrebbe qui evocare i Doors. Mi piacciono, lo devo ammettere, anche se la cibernetica title track non mi fa troppo impazzire. Ha una durata un pochino impegnativa (oltre nove minuti), mentre per questo genere cosi complesso, opterei per brani più veloci per facilitarne la fruizione; ha sonorità poi molto più stralunate, il che potrebbe essere un pregio, ma la durata cosi importante necessita comunque di un grande sforzo nell'ascolto, soprattutto se i mutamenti in seno al brano virano verso la musica EBM/techno/dance. Ecco, 'My Lunch' non è proprio un disco da mettere per un picnic nel prato, è qualcosa che entra sotto la pelle, richiede una buona dose di concentrazione per assuefarsi ai suoi umori. Dopo essersi immersi nel mondo dronico di "My Lunch", ecco "Mirror", decisamente più rilassata nel suo incedere malinconico, che mostra peraltro più di una certa reminiscenza con i Depeche Mode. Anche qui, oltre otto minuti che, vista la ridondanza del pezzo, avrei interrotto almeno con un paio di minuti di anticipo. "Weirdo", che significa strano, lo è di nome e di fatto grazie a quella sua andatura sbilenca nella prima metà; poi assistiamo all'enesimo fenomeno di trasfigurazione musicale che evolve in stranite atmosfere. Una bella tromba apre "Vanity Wheel" e l'atmosfera è quella da lounge bar, locale fumoso, luci soffuse, una voce alla Robert Smith, che si alterna con quella della particolare Elisabetta, in un pezzo dotato sicuramente di un certo carisma e che vede altri richiami ai Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Potrebbe essere un'eresia, però provate a dargli un ascolto e dirmi se non ho ragione. In chiusura, un altro paio di pezzi: "Dreamers", parafrasando il suo titolo, ha un che di onirico che mi ha risvegliato nella memoria due vecchi pezzi dei Simple Minds, "Big Sleep" e "Hunter and the Hunted"; potrete immaginare quindi il mio piacere. Infine, "Jesus's Back", mosso da un ultimo afflato che chiama in causa il movimento trip hop guidato da Portished/Massive Attack, e lo fa convivere con un psych rock tanto sbalestrato quanto accattivante, che sancisce le eccelse qualità compositive di questi folli CRM. I think this is a solid release as well as line-up. Except for the fact that they don't have Mick Harris anymore. He seemed to be the driving force when it came to grindcore. But Napalm changed into more of a death metal band than grind. The energy is high up there and the riffs are mind boggling. This is another newer generation of Napalm that I like. A lot of their newer material is OK but I prefer the old. This has a good sound to it and vibe. I think old school Barney is the best but he's doing good on here as well.

The music is the highlight of this album and I did enjoy pretty much all the tracks. Mitch's vocals are a little annoying though, but it brings back Mick to old Napalm. I felt that the bulk of the songs had a good structure to them and the guitar tone was appropriate. They were fortunate that Jesse (RIP) was still with the band at this point. I always liked him with the band. I think after 'Harmony Corruption' the band experienced a fall in their energy (Mick). They've just changed when he left and turned more towards death metal than grind. Not that that's bad, but maybe change their name, I'm not sure.

The guitars sound like they're tuned pretty low hence their thick sound. Really keeping it underground they are and Danny has some wicked drum tracks though it sounds like he's using triggers. That's not bad just has to keep up with the rhythms! I guess I just like the old school Napalm though I do think a lot of their newer stuff is palatable. But yeah, they should've changed their name. However, there are a lot of good moments to this album. Nothing that sticks as well as the old but still, it is quality. Barney isn't as low on the growls as he was on 'Harmony Corruption' or 'Fear, Emptiness, Despair'.

This album is more than 20 years old, but it's still on the good side of Napalm. The main members were with the band on here (Barney, Jesse, Mitch and Shane). I don't know what happened to the last track on this album but all the songs are pretty strong! I decided to buy the CD after hearing this digitally. Mind you, I still collect CD's. It was worth getting, wholeheartedly! The energy and fire is still there on this one it'll just never amount to 'Harmony Corruption'. That one was filled with death/grind glory! Still, an excellent effort on this one. They have shown the metal community fresh new riffs! Check it! (Death8699)

The Upland Band - Living in Paradise

#PER CHI AMA: Psych/Indie

Chissà a quale territorio montano si riferisce Michael Beckett, unico membro di questa The Upland Band? A quanto pare il polistrumentista teutonico farebbe riferimento ad un piccolo villaggio in una zona collinare della Renania orientale, quell'area, per intenderci, posta tra Germania e Paesi Bassi. È qui che è ambientato questo 'Living in Paradise'. Nove brevi racconti a narrarci, attraverso un soft-psych-indie-pop, fatti storici, osservazioni oggettive e addirittura piccanti gossip del villaggio stesso, grazie anche ad un cast di personaggi assai particolari. Si parte con le prime due song del disco, "A Partial Overview of the Neighborhood" e "ohfivetwosixfive" (si, con la "o" minuscola), e un sound che sembra ammiccare ad un post punk contaminato dalla psichedelia, quella stessa che annebbia le nostre menti nella successiva "Metamphetamine and Clay" (che narra di una cartiera utilizzata nella produzione di massa delle metanfenamine, insomma un 'Breaking Bad' de noialtri), un pezzo decisamente più blando (e pop) nei ritmi e nelle chitarre, per quasi quattro minuti di atmosfere rilassate e con la voce di Michael, vicino a certe cose dei Yo La Tengo, a contribuire a questo stato di ovattamento mentale. Se avevo apprezzato decisamente le prime due tracce, non posso dire altrettanto di quest'ultima e della quarta "Walk or Run", un altro pezzo quasi anestetizzante e dotato di scarso mordente, almeno fino al break acustico celestiale, posto da metà brano in su, sembra valorizzare maggiormente il prodotto del buon Michael. "Ontario" parla del fantasma di un pilota di bombardieri canadese abbattuto, ma il pezzo è in realtà puro drone per due minuti e mezzo. "The Curly Kale Express" parla ironicamente di un treno dove potersi mangiare cavolo riccio, in un brano dai ritmi e contenuti decisamente ironici, cosi come la seguente "Swastika Ink". In chiusura, "Down and Out (in the 17th Century)" e "Rain, Sleet and Mud", la prima col suo riff ridondante sparato in loop per oltre cinque minuti, la seconda più sghemba ed ipnoticamente indirizzata a chiudere un disco apparentemente easy listening, in realtà complicato da digerire e comprendere. Miasmes - Répugnance

#PER CHI AMA: Black/Death

Li avevo recensiti poco meno di un anno fa in occasione del loro EP di debutto, 'Vermines'. Tornano oggi i francesi Miasmes, questa volta con Lp d'esordio, 'Répugnance'. Lo stile black old school mi sembra trovare ampie conferme anche in questa nuova release, che sembra non far sconti a nessuno in fatto di brutalità. Nove i pezzi a disposizione per sancire la ferocia di questo terzetto transalpino che, fin dall'iniziale "Délivrance", fa della violenza il proprio pamphlet con un sound davvero malvagio e incazzato. Echi di Impaled Nazarene sembrano confluire nell'impasto sonoro dei nostri con un concentrato granitico di black, death e punk. Ecco, queste poche righe basterebbero a descrivere il contenuto di questa release, che di certo non sprizza originalità dai suoi pori, ma che poi in realtà mostra come per fare un bel bordello, sia necessario anche avere gli attributi, le idee, e le competenze. Ebbene, i Miasmes non si tirano certo indietro, macinano vittime lungo il proprio cammino con armi convenzionali, dal basso assassino di "Prophétie" che ben va a braccetto con il caustico screaming di G. E poi ancora "Calvaire" e le sue ritmiche tanto devastanti quanto sghembe, e quelle sue chitarre che potrebbero evocare anche i Mayhem, con quel rifferama più vicino ad una sega circolare che al suono della sei corde. Non male poi l'assolo selvaggio che chiude il pezzo che ci introduce immediatamente ad un'altra song di violenza inaudita, "Peste". Se pensate di trovare melodie ruffiane, parti orchestrali, break atmosferici o quant'altro, beh potete pure scordarvelo, qui non passa lo straniero, diceva qualcuno. E siamo solo a metà strada. Il massacro infatti continua "Répulsion", una song che per lo meno, nel suo incipit mostra un approccio più mid-tempo, cosa che non si può altrettanto dire di "Malemort" e "Aversion", un altro paio di brani che ci rifilano un uno-due tra mandibola e stomaco, lavorandoci poi ai fianchi, con precisione chirurgica la prima, e dirompenza punk hardcore la seconda. Siamo quasi agli sgoccioli e mancano le ultime due song, la deflagrante "Destructeurs" (con cui però inizio a percepire i primi segni di stanchezza dall'ascolto della release) e la conclusiva "Pestilence", il pezzo più lungo del lotto, che condensa verosimilmente quanto ascoltato nei precedenti 36 minuti con ritmiche serrate di scuola Mayhem unite a quell'attitudine degli Impaled Nazarene. Alla fine 'Répugnance' è un album onesto di suoni vecchia scuola che piacerà però esclusivamente agli amanti di tali sonorità e pochissimi altri. (Francesco Scarci)

Ifryt - P​ł​uca

#PER CHI AMA: Heavy/Black'n'Roll

In tutta sincerità con una copertina del genere, mi sarei aspettato sonorità dal piglio progressive, invece i polacchi Ifryt (one-man band guidata da tal Kuna) irrompono con questo loro EP di debutto, intitolato 'Płuca', con un heavy black'n'roll, e tre cavalcate che già dall'iniziale "Klucz Salomona", evidenziano un approccio chitarristico speed metal vicino a certe cose di Running Wild/Judas Priest, mentre le vocals si avvicendano tra uno screaming propriamente black e un cantato pulito, mai troppo convincente, a dire il vero. Positivo a livello solistico, ma già da questo primo pezzo si notano zone d'ombra. Si prosegue allora con un ascolto ancora più attento della successiva "Kona Allah", un'altra scheggia speed black dal suono piuttosto anacronistico, anni '80 per intenderci e stile Celtic Frost, in cui salverei solo il lavoro delle chitarre nella parte solistica, per il resto niente, ma proprio niente di nuovo dal fronte orientale. E andiamo ad ascoltare il terzo e ultimo brano, i dieci minuti secchi di "Straszne Rzeczy", che parte con delle spoken words su di una porzione ritmata, prima di esplodere in una poltiglia di suoni arraffati alla bell'e meglio. Tra accelerazioni black, parti atmosferiche, vocalizzi blackish, porzioni folkloriche, partiture dissonanti, cori puliti in polacco e solismi affatto male, l'unico difetto sembra essere legato ad una certa mancanza di armonia tra tutti questi elementi. Tuttavia, devo ammettere che questo potrebbe essere un buon punto da cui partire con un sound più avanguardistico, se meglio concepito e strutturato. Si attendono sviluppi da questo cantiere aperto. I actually like this album more than their newer material! The music is better, so is the production and vocals. Quite an array of thrash galore and not so much death metal here, they seem to blend those two genres together. The vocals are a little different from what I'm used to, but the music is top notch! A lot of memorable riffs here and quite a sum of variety, too! Everything fit together on this release. Nothing seems to really lag, the energy is high up there. All 10 tracks (but the last release under Hammerheart Records, has 17!) are good, there weren't any that I though were lesser than others. They really seemed to put their creative juices to work on this one.

One thing that I won't get into are the lyrical concepts. Everything else I'm pretty open to on here. This is a second album I've heard from this band and I'm really liking what I'm hearing! The guitar riffs I've paid close attention to and I've concluded it's probably their best in existence! I took the liberty to find this on CD because I really want to hear it in my stereo, not nauseating headphones. They don't have a mountain full of followers nor press, so helping this band is the best way to show they mean business in the metal realm. I've done my part and if you're not convinced, it's your issue.

This is somewhat of an old-style production type of recording, but everything seemed to be mixed well! The guitars and vocals I paid most attention to. I've found that there's not an overabundance of lead guitar going around here, just enough. That's something I found fault in their more recent recordings. The rhythms were straightforward and somewhat technical. But they sure as hell made catchy riffs! They were pretty original in their songwriting. I didn't find much flaws in their playing, they were immaculate! The voice went well with the music! I've found the music to be the most likable aspect to this release.

As I've said, show some support to this band and buy the CD! It's worth it, to those who still have CD players! Spotify and YouTube both feature this album. I would take an hour out of your time and take a good listen to this release! It's worth your time. I wouldn't be urging you to do it if I didn't believe it to be true! Thrash galore and the riffs are hell of a lot of creative in this genre of metal! I'd like for this band to stay in existence for a while longer even if it just amounts to a few good releases. But like I said, I've found all the albums I've heard from this band to be palatable! Check them out! (Death8699)

Iron Maiden - Powerslave

Probably the most catchy Iron Maiden release that I've ever heard. And I've been into metal for over 30 years! The chorus's are epic and the rhythms are unique as all hell. The leads amazing and Bruce on vocals never disappoints! The riffs and vocals are how this album shines. Not a song here that is "bad" or "bogus." They all are amazing! I'm surprised that I became a Maiden fan so much later on in their career. But that's alright, I'm able to enjoy it now! The guitars and vocals especially. They put on a great live performance as well! The songs sound as good as they are on the album.

This whole album rocks, there isn't a song on here that's devoid of glory. Every song is a highlight and for a 40 year old album the production is good. I got the remastered version but still! All the instruments were well mixed. Hands down, my favorite Maiden release! The songs are just epic! The lead guitars smoked as well. They sound just as good live as they do on the album. Maybe even better! These guys are the pioneers in heavy metal. If you just take a listen to this one if you're a critic and you'll hear what I mean. They're a 5-piece on this one live there were 6 members. Man do they crush live!

Bruce sounds great on here and he had to battle throat cancer. Of course, this was way back in the early 80's when he was in his prime. He still sounds good though at 64 years old. I'm glad I got to see them perform before they retire. It doesn't seem like they're going to though, I think there's still the fire in all of them. I still need to build up my Maiden collection I only own two of their releases. Good thing that there's a local record store that stocks a lot of METAL!! I made sure to get this one first since I've heard it before. It's no surprise that there's 30 reviews for this album! A lot of say about it!

Do yourself a favor if you're a newbie in heavy metal start with this Maiden album! Buy the CD, don't just stream it. But well, if you're going to stream it first get a physical copy next if you aren't convinced. The guitars, vocals and vibe is all there. "Aces High" and "2 Minutes To Midnight" are my favorite songs from this one. But they're all good. The originality in the guitars and Bruce's voice is top notch. The range is there and Bruce just smokes. This guy can really sing. The guitars go well with the vocals. Do yourself a favor and pick this up it's worth its weight in gold! (Death8699)
