#FOR FANS OF: Thrash/Groove Death

My first release from Soulfly was 'Savages' which I found to be interesting. This release seemed bland the first few listens to. Then it kind of grew on me. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect here and well this one is a little bit more experimental and cut-throat. I've been a fan of Max Cavalera since the early Sepultura days in the band. He took quite a different approach then those days here is experimental Max. I like it though, the not knowing what to expect here sort of idea. The brutality, the temperance, the enlightenment. It's 40 minutes of in your face metal with vocal effects and odd time signatures.

This type of metal has a bit of a groove to it with death metal components. A really odd release including the leads with terror on the vocals bellowing. These guys have riffs that are simply atypical and sort of bizarre. I don't know how else to describe this album but just that: ATYPICAL. It might be the norm of how Soulfly works and that's how Max wants it, I just sense a peculiar sounds and rhythms. Nothing seems to remain the same it's just different from all respects. Then the clean tone guitars, it gives me pause about the direction the band is taking here. Weird metal and highly atypical.

Forty minutes of this going on what I've described here. It's solid here, Max sounds odd on this it's forceful but not to the extent reflective of Sepultura's Max in your face. Hell, he's in his 50's now still making metal and Igor doing Sepultura tributes too. He's had to relearn their songs but still sounds good. Soulfly is his project. Weird metal it's totally him just whatever he's doing he's putting his thoughts into this music the rhythms are cool and heavy but this experiment with Soulfly puts Max in a different position. I don't hear a plethora of fans liking this band. Those I do because it's metal but it's just different genres.

The anger and brutality is here but Max is in a league of his own dynamics. If he continues in this direction, who knows what to expect on the next LP. More experimenting or something more straightforward? It's unpredictable as to where he's going here. Heavy guitars, clean bouts and vocals with an echo/reverb. This guy is totally metal, it's just his ideas for metal aren't at all the same as the Sepultura days where he's utterly thrash galore. But on 'Roots' is where his strange where his writing went opposed to 'Beneath The Remains' and 'Arise'. I think the expectation is a new Sepultura here with Max but it's so not. Don't expect that at all. For Soulfly fans, this is a keeper! (Death8699)

Faun - Totem

A distanza di un paio d’anni dal precedente lavoro, 'Renaissance' (datato 2005), tornò in pista il quintetto teutonico dei Faun, con un nuovo affascinante album. Dopo una lunga intro di quasi quattro minuti, inizia un viaggio nel loro mondo ancestrale. 'Totem' è suddiviso virtualmente in tre capitoli: la prima parte viaggia su binari dark gothic, con le voci di Lisa e Fiona sempre in risalto e l’intrigante uso di strumenti folkloristici, come il bouzouki irlandese, l’arpa celtica, il didgeridoo e l’hurdy-gurdy, che conferiscono al sound dei nostri, le emozioni tipiche della musica classica, per la sua capacità di essere senza tempo. Si tratta di composizioni vellutate, estremamente rilassanti, che ci riportano con la mente a paesaggi incantati, con quell’uso delle chitarre acustiche che tracciano dolci linee melodiche e angeliche vocals femminile che declamano splendide poesie. Ciò che mi fa storcere il naso è come sempre il cantato maschile di Oliver Sa Tyr in lingua tedesca, e quella sua incapacità di fondo di risultare melodica. La parte centrale del disco è invece orientata a sonorità medievali: sembra di essere scaraventati indietro nel tempo di quasi mille anni nella lande scozzesi che hanno ospitato il film 'Braveheart', grazie all’utilizzo di strumenti “vetusti” quali mandolino, flauti, percussioni e cornamusa. La terza parte del cd infine, torna a ricalcare il sound posto in apertura di questo lavoro, con ambientazioni più oscure e ipnotiche, fatte di atmosfere evocanti antichi riti pagani ed una certa spiritualità che mostra la connessione dei nostri con la natura. 'Totem' non è certo un disco di facile approccio, ma se siete alla ricerca di musica di sicuro non banale, la proposta dei Faun, potrebbe sicuramente fare al caso vostro. (Francesco Scarci)

Abraxas - Totem

#PER CHI AMA: Funk-pop/Indie

Gi Abraxas sono il frutto di una lunga avventura musicale di quattro amici d'infanzia parigini: Tino Gelli, Jonas Landman, Solal Toumayan e Leon Vidal. Il loro nome è un omaggio allo storico album di Santana e tra le loro influenze citano Pink Floyd e i King Crimson degli anni '70 ma anche Late Of The Pier e Of Montreal. Tanti e tali riferimenti producono uno stile difficilmente definibile, una sorta di mix tra pop, new wave, synth pop e funk, se non che gli Abraxas stessi si sono premurati di battezzarlo "protodancepop", il che, devo ammettere, rende bene l’idea di quello che fanno. Dopo che, nel 2011, esordivano con l’album autoprodotto 'Warthog', sorta di concept sulla vita di un facocero, esce quest’anno il loro primo EP per l’etichetta Samla Music. Totem dispiega in modo efficace, nell’arco di 5 brani peculiari, quella che è la proposta musicale del quartetto, che passa con leggerezza ed ironia su una quarantina d’anni di musica, senza soffermarsi o dilungarsi su nessun genere in particolare. I primi due brani, “Deep Down in the Middle of Shanghai” e “Guatemala”, a dispetto dei titoli che rimandano a luoghi e suggestioni esotiche, sembrano una perfetta sintesi tra il fulminante esordio dei connazionali Phoenix e l’ultimo acclamato lavoro dei Daft Punk, con le stesse atmosfere danzerecce, le chitarre funkeggianti e una certa idea di leggerezza. “Democratie” si veste invece di brume indie, mentre “Kayak” è un piccolo gioiello in grado di coniugare, all’interno di una struttura inusuale, un’invidiabile levità di tocco e certe atmosfere da tardi Pink Floyd. Gli Abraxas si muovono con personalità alla ricerca della pop song perfetta, e nel frattempo propongono un dischetto molto curato, nei suoni tanto quanto nella confezione, in grado di regalare una ventina di minuti di disimpegno per nulla vuoto e stupido.
