#PER CHI AMA: Brutal Death

La Hammerheart nel 1999 fondò di colpo una nuova sotto-etichetta, la The Plague, per dedicarsi al brutal e dar, sin da subito, filo da torcere alla Relapse, uscendo con questi Diabolic. Originalità tanta, tranne nel genere suonato e nei riffs portanti ovviamente, ma ogni canzone possiede una grande quantità di idee nate dalla vena compositiva di tutti i componenti. Le loro ispirazioni vengono tutte dalle migliori band del genere ovvero dal brutal death, quindi se i nomi di Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation, Cannibal Corpse, Monstrosity (e sono solo alcuni) vi bastano per farvi inquadrare il genere dell'act statunitense, potete andare tranquilli. Continua però il difetto della The Plague di realizzare digipack insignificanti, unico difetto. A mio parere, uno dei dischi brutal più belli del 2000, e forse non solo per quello estremo, ma addirittura in generale.

Gli Infernal Goat sono una band proveniente dalla Sardegna, fautrice di un black grezzo e minimale, dove i riff di chitarra provano a dare la giusta atmosfera, instillando angoscia. I tempi di batteria sono tutti molto lanciati. In alcune parti il richiamo agli Impaled Nazarene è molto forte. Le vocals sono delle vere e proprie urla lancinanti e sordide. Purtroppo, la registrazione del vecchio promo non è stata ben concepita, sbagliando nell’equalizzazione e nei volumi. Da segnalare qui la cover di “The Horney And The Horned”, tratta da 'Ugra Karma' degli stessi Impaled Nazarene. L'EP di quattro tracce è invece caratterizzato da un forte impatto sonoro. Il punto di riferimento per questa furia sarda rimane sempre il black metal, ma la registrazione risulta migliorata, essendo tutto ben più bilanciato e comprensibile. Le canzoni mantengono un’andatura decisamente sostenuta, ma inserendo preziosi e azzeccati stacchi di chitarra. Sicuramente un buon passo avanti rispetto al 'Promo 999'.

Erotic Temple - Erotic Mass

Pronti per il caos sovrano? Si, perché 'Erotic Mass' dei giapponesi Erotic Temple, sembra più un esperimento mal riuscito piuttosto che un progetto ben definito, lasciando l'ascoltatore con una sensazione di disorientamento sin dalle prime note. Tralasciando intro e outro, forse i migliori pezzi del lotto (la registrazione di due amplessi), la successiva "Analmancy", registrata probabilmente in cantina con un aratro, è puro raw black/grind con riff similari più a una sega elettrica che a una chitarra, con le vocals demoniache che sembrano sgorgare direttamente dall'inferno. Chissà se sia un atto provocatorio o cosa, ma il risultato non è certamente dei migliori. Che dire poi dei sette secondi di "Immortal Penis" o la sudicia e caustica "Blasphemous Bloody Vulva", tra chitarre zanzarose, voci che sembrano uscire da un tombino e un assolo che avrebbe potuto anche essere interessante, ma che questa registrazione affossa malamente. Ecco, il disco procede su questa farsa con altri quattro "brani" che, messi insieme, raggiungono forse i sei minuti scarsi di putrida cacofonia, per un lavoro che, definire deludente, potrebbe risultare addirittura essere eufemistico. The aggression factor is still quite evident on here, and the usual Cristina/Andrea vocal tradeoffs are as well. I liked the guitars probably the most on here, rather than any of their previous works. Being a fan from somewhat early on, basically 'Dark Adrenaline' (2012) onward, I really liked it. However, 'Black Anima' (2019) I didn't really care for. This is probably the most illustrious release from them, and it is continually strong! It held my interest the way 'Delirium' (2016) did for me. 'Delirium' was almost 60 minutes of sheer, unwavering gothic metal with super heavy guitars. This carries with it the same vibe though not as DARK.

It seems that Cristina is on the most here, not sure if that's what they wanted, just I like it more. I've never been a fan of Andrea's but the fact that they're still featuring both, sometimes even simultaneously, sounds pretty killer & grim!

I do believe that there's a newer guitar player, but the lines seem in the vein of the old style of tuning, maybe drop A. In any case, it's damn heavy and unique. It's safe to say musically it's 'Delirium' Part-B. I know Cristina talked openly about that album & that she would never make fun of people with "mental conditions". Rightfully so, the lyrics here are quite meaningful.

So far, I've really liked these from the band: 'Dark Adrenaline' (2012), 'Broken Crown Halo' (2014), 'Delirium' (2016) and 'Sleepless Empire' (2025), in rigorous chronological order. I encourage all of you that are fans of modern gothic metal to check this one out, what a great example of mature musicianship & a great overall sound/atmosphere! (Death8699)

Cephalic Carnage - Exploiting Dysfunction

Abbiamo sempre evidenziato il coraggio e l'originalità dei Cephalic Carnage, qui al secondo disco, e di come, senza tanto timore, abbiano sperimentano un grindcore che raccoglie momenti di pura pazzia musicale con l'inserto di momenti jazz e altri dove regna quella brutalità tanto di voga a inizio millennio. L’album potrebbe sembrare al primo impatto faticoso da ascoltare per intero, ma le 15 canzoni di cui è costituito, sono valide, originali e particolari e potrebbe bastare un secondo passaggio nel vostro stereo, per apprezzare le tantissime idee che questi pazzoidi sono riusciti ad aggiungere ai soliti ritmi grind. Non è da trascurare il buon livello di produzione e registrazione e neppure la particolare copertina pienamente in tema con il disco. L’etichetta ha sempre avuto grande intuito nel ricercare band che suonano questo genere e nel 2000 non si smentì ancora una volta.

There are some pretty good old school death metal bands from Chicago, amongst them in the scene would be Cyanide (spelled "Cianide"), who has been somewhat inconsistent in releasing LPs over their long career & this band Cardiac Arrest (US) who has been quite consistent. They've maintained the same lineup for quite some time as well, which goes to show you that this form of entertainment (extreme death metal) they're quite serious about.

I look for specific things in critiquing extreme metal albums, mainly the music, the vocals, the recording quality & if it's a continual progression musically or about the same. On here, compared to 'The Day That Death Prevailed' (2020), it is definitely a progression musically & a more mature release on top of that. Seems that they've really blown my hair back with this one because you've got at least three different voices transpiring on a given song & the guitar riffs that are brand-new covering all under that, as well as the unrelenting aggression factor!

A lot of their earlier LPs out there don't include the lyrics. The vinyl/CDs/tapes are now beginning to include the words so it's more known that to which their brutality lies, besides just along the music. Only the last 2 LPs have featured the words. A personal favorite from frontman Adam Scott is the song "Victims of Blasphemy" (track 2 on here). I've actually found that ALL THE SONGS are my favorites. There's none that are really bland to me, seems intriguing because as much as I like their previous releases, not ALL THE SONGS were my favorites.

I did not find any holes or gaps on this LP, it is continually HEAVY, it is original sounding & it is very consistent. You can hear the guitars, the bass & drums quite well, on some of their previous LPs, especially the earlier material was good but the recording quality (despite the well composed music) was a little void. You'll hear everything on this one, it's balanced out & not overly recycled. It's quite surprising because not a lot of old school death metal bands continue to evolve. They either die-out, or they just don't evolve. CA is living on since 1997, show support for them as they continue to RAID Chicago & worldwide! Make this one a part of your collection! (Death8699)

Fog - The Endless War

Dopo la solennne intro di tastiere ed effetti vari da battaglia, questa one-man-band italica inizia a suonare brani più articolati, grezzi ma ottimamente realizzati in ogni loro passaggio, completando e rilasciando un’atmosfera cupa e triste. Di stile sicuramente minimale, i nostri alternano sfuriate secche a rallentamenti pervasi da melodie oscure come quelle della prima canzone, "The Eye", poi seguita da una song più lenta ("The Army of the Dead") alla maniera dei Darkthrone più ragionati e Carpathian Forest. Queste sono anche le influenze che ritroviamo nel loro demo, con ritmi pure più sciolti, e con attacchi di chitarra più enfatici. A metà brano subentra addirittura un intermezzo gregoriano, tetro e a tono; una voce gracchiata compassata, come tutto il resto old style, scorre lungo il nastro concluso dall’ottima “Carpathian Forest”, cover del gruppo omonimo.
