The older, the uglier. I guess this hits quite perfectly when it comes to aging and also to Doom Cult Commando, at least if you consider that Desaster boss Infernal K. is part of the band.
To be honest, 'Das Erwachen der Schlange' (The Awakening Of The Snake) has almost nothing to do with the typical thrash Desaster has been performing for many decades now, but much more with some raw black metal like Impiety on their masterpiece 'Skullfucking Armageddon' (especially the sound of the instruments). Also, the vocals are quite different from everything concerning Desaster. The vocalist Doom Cult sounds a lot like Attila from Mayhem when he is practicing his demonic chants and praises.
This combination offers a very intense, brutal atmosphere with some super fast and sinister songs on that demo. What is remarkable is that the sound quality differs from song to song. I guess that the guys didn’t record them in a single session; otherwise, I cannot explain the fluctuation in the quality. If you compare the opener "Wie die Fliege zum Licht” with the next track “Geist ist Alles,” you will clearly notice the increase in quality in the recording. Although I like both recordings, to be honest, raw black metal doesn’t have to have a Dimmu Borgir sound, does it?
The sickest track on the demo is probably “Menschenmüll” (Human Waste), which has some very deep growled vocals (does anybody remember the fabulous demo “…by the Force of Sacred Magic Rites” by Darklord?). With a running time of 2:50 minutes, this one is by far the shortest and also the fastest track. And if you listen carefully, you can hear Infernal’s love for punk songs, too.
'Das Erwachen der Schlange' is a really nice demo for everybody who likes war and raw black metal. Let’s hope that the guys will release a full-length soon. (Michael Baier)
