Nocturnal Escape - S/t

#PER CHI AMA/FOR FANS OF: Black/Death/Folk/Prog
Staremo a vedere... (Bob Stoner)

Nocturnal Escape is a young German band, founded in 2014, but made up of already experienced musicians (Disgusting Perversion, Bleak). In 2015 they released their first full length, distributed independently via Bandcamp. Let's start with the artwork: captivating, funny and unconventional. The album contains 8 tracks with nearly an hour of music that unrolls itself in a twisted and sophisticated way between death, folk and black metal with a pinch of epic and progressiveness. With varying style and time changes (as you can appreciate in the opener, “War Of Beliefs”), excellent technique, everything completed by demoniac voices and clean voices very evocative in a TYR style. The melodic plots inserted in the tracks distract the listener for a moment from the idea of being in front of a true metal disc, as in the prologue and in the acoustic bridge of “Lucid Mind” that will walk you through another sound path, much harder and in a warmonger-like tone. The whole album revolves around these weird combinations of styles and smashing diversity, always neat and sometimes bizarre, however to appreciate, because thanks to them the work is interesting and varied, played with a guitar technique that explodes in kaleidoscopic solos. The teutonic trio from Augsburg, consisting of Leo Bergmann (guitar, synth, drum machine, shout vocals) , Klaus Bergmann (bass) and Thomas Zimmermann (clean vocals), plays very well its cards, mainly in the fast and thrash oriented parts, with relentless rhythms reminiscent of Moonsorrow, with a pinch of Apokalyptische Reiter; for that attitude to the bizarre, unusual and unexpected. The band shows a compact and brilliant sound with the voice always highlighted, and everything supported by a good production, sometimes even too clear and punctilious, but that exalts every instrument as it should anyway. In some rhythms they remind of the mythical Irish folk metallers Cruachan or the teutonics Menhir, even if Nocturnal Escape seems to like the epic components of the black metal with progressive implications more. In fact, during the tracks the German combo leaves folk an important role but it's never predominant but diverting frequently the sound to progressive shores, as in the vein of Immanent or Corr Mhona. The whole release flows fast and imaginative, revealing melody and grit, with the most black/death oriented parts to show, maybe, the best side of the band, even if in general the songwriting will be confirmed highly effective and always of high quality, besides the usage of an aseptic drum machine. Excellent chiaroscuro of “Gaia's Demise”, counterpointed by solemn and epic sounds. The ending track, "Call to Humanity" exalts in the end the more classical speed metal mood of the trio with voice and solos assigned to little known guest stars, with the result of increasing the value of the dose, rising further the disruptive force of this work. Very good debut. Is this the birth of a new star in the metal cosmos? Let's see... (Bob Stoner)
