#PER CHI AMA: Black Progressive

Devo ammettere di non essere mai stato un grandissimo fan della band norvegese, ma dopo la svolta di 'Monumension', iniziai ad apprezzare enormemente il sound di Grutle e soci, aspettando ogni anno l’uscita dell’ennesimo piccolo gioiellino. In attesa dell'imminentissima uscita di 'Heimdal' (domani) andiamo a riscoprire un’altra prestazione maiuscola per la band norvegese, 'Ruun'. A differenza del precedente 'Isa', i nostri sfoderano un album leggermente più accessibile, grazie ad un ammorbidimento dei suoni e ad una ricerca ancora più raffinata di atmosfere progressive e sperimentali. "Path to Vanir" potrebbe tranquillamente essere l’emblema di questo nuovo capitolo firmato Enslaved: ritmiche rockeggianti su cui s’inseriscono i cori da brivido di Grutle, l’hammond dal deciso sapore seventies, atmosferici inserti che non possono non ricordare i Pink Floyd, evocativo. "Fusion of Sense and Earth" è già una song molto più aggressiva: ruvide chitarre sorrette da una ritmica incisiva e dalla vetriolica voce di Mr. Kjellson, mostrano di che pasta sono fatti i nostri, per poi abbandonarsi ad un finale travolgente grazie ad un bellissimo assolo. Da un bel po' si dice che il combo nordico non è più assimilabile al black metal, quella forma di viking che inventarono quasi 30 anni fa con quel capolavoro intitolato 'Vikingligr Veldi'. Gli Enslaved da un bel po' sono più vicini a sonorità progressive sia per genere proposto che per la eccellente perizia tecnica. Ogni song è un viaggio in un mondo parallelo, una caleidoscopica cavalcata attraverso giochi di luci e ombre che portano ad abbandonarmi alla mercè di questo meraviglioso album. 'Ruun' rappresenta la giusta consacrazione di una band che fin dagli esordi ha mostrato una propria personalità ben definita ed originale. La title track, richiamando i suoni di 'Isa', conferma il fatto che comunque l’act nordico non abbia tralasciato i suoni del passato: sette minuti di musica dai contorni epici, miscelati alla perfezione con il sound ispirato e psichedelico che abbiamo avuto modo di ascoltare in questi ultimi anni. "Tides of Chaos" ha un sapore più doom oriented con le sue pesanti e lente chitarre, le clean vocals corali contrapposte allo screaming tagliente di Grutle, ma ciò che comunque gioca un ruolo determinante in tutto il disco è il lavoro egregio fatto alle tastiere, mai in primissimo piano, ma fondamentali per la totale riuscita dell’album. Il disco si chiude con tre pezzi entusiasmanti: la malinconica "Essence", un eloquente dipinto del magnifico paesaggio nordico; "Api-vat", la song più metal dell’intero lavoro e "Heir to the Cosmic Seed" altro esempio di come si possa fare musica intelligente mantenendo invariata l’aggressività di fondo. Ottime melodie su dissonanti riff glaciali, atmosfere progressive, eccellenti vocals e brillanti assoli, rendono 'Ruun' un grande album da far vostro ad ogni costo. Consigliato a tutti gli amanti del metal, dal prog al death, passando per il black, il thrash o l’epic. Il più classico "Buy or Die"! (Francesco Scarci)

What a fantastic release musically! These guys might've changed their genre(s), but they're still belting out some magnificent music! The riffs are amazingly technical and the vocals compliment the music wholeheartedly. The album is pretty brutal and melodic at the same time! Their melodies and intensity are all there. These guys know what the heck they're doing in the songwriting aspect. They totally slay. I'm surprised not a lot of people have heard about this band. They're totally technical and full of intensity. The whole album is like this. Some melodies sound like early Arch Enemy. But not duplicated, just a resemblance.

This whole album deserves praise from listeners. They're really fast in the picking department (guitars) and heavy rhythms. Definitely one fine album that was released last year! I hope that their CD will be out and available, I have yet to find it but I will!

There's a trade-off with the vocals, some screaming and some deep throat. It accompanies the music quite well. I'm rating this as an "79" because there are so many good things about this album. The music is tops with me!

I liked the production quality the music went fantastic alongside everything else. The riffs are so catchy and noteworthy! That's my favorite aspect of the album. But I dug the vocals as well and the drums go well alongside the insane music. These guys do great keeping up their pace. It's amazingly crafted. There are some clean guitars, but not a lot. They're melodic as all hell on here. They deserve credit for making a release that's as dynamite as this one is! The guitars are the most catchy and admirable than anything else on here. Everything fit into place on here and let's hope that they have quite a career here in metal! (Death8699)

#PER CHI AMA: Black Old School

Incarnazione black metal del primo batterista degli svedesi Dark Funeral, Draugen (presente sul MCD di culto chiamato semplicemente 'Dark Funeral' e dopo ristampato sotto il nome 'In the Sign...' con l'aggiunta di due bonus track), questi Svartsyn ci propongono un'infernale dose di black primordiale senza troppi compromessi. I brani contenuti in questo violentissimo '...His Majesty' infatti non godono di un'ottima produzione, ma comunque tutto è chiaro e ben in evidenza. La voce è maligna ed effettata, le parti di batteria tutte veloci e massacranti e il tutto dosato ad una buona preparazione tecnica in stile svedese. Il disco suona freddo e spietato come non se ne sentiva da anni, altro che tastieroni, violini o voci femminili, qui abbiamo a che fare con dei massacratori giunti direttamente dall'inferno e '...His Majesty' rappresenta il terzo capitolo di questa band svedese rimasta a lungo nell'ombra. Il CD è uscito originariamente per la portoghese Sound Riot Records in una elegante versione con artwork bianco e nero e riproposto nel 2022 in vinile e cassetta per la Nomad Snakepit Productions. Consigliato per i soli amanti del genere.

#PER CHI AMA: Gothic Metal

Ricordo di aver atteso a lungo quel momento, ero preoccupato che una delle mie band preferite di sempre, potesse deludermi e che potessi allontanarmi definitivamente dalla loro musica, ma questo capitolo discografico dei lusitani Moonspell fugò via ogni mio dubbio sulla loro classe. Freschi di contratto con la SPV, dopo anni passati alla Century Media, Fernando Ribeiro e soci sfoderano qui una grande prova, rilasciando 'Memorial' a distanza di tre anni dal discreto 'The Antidote'. Devo ammettere di aver avuto qualche dubbio sulla valenza dei quattro portoghesi dopo le non eccelse ultime uscite; avevo amato 'Sin/Pecado' e i precedenti lavori ma, da lì in poi, avevo creduto in una parabola discendente della band. Fortunatamente il settimo lavoro in studio dell’act portoghese, spazzò via tutte le polemiche che erano ruotate attorno al quartetto e qui sono i fatti a parlare: tredici grandi pezzi (più una bonus track nella limited edition) per più di un’ora di musica, musica di gran classe che non può non richiamare alla mente gli album storici 'Wolfheart' e 'Irreligious' che diedero popolarità e gloria alla band. Un’intro vampiresca apre le danze di 'Memorial', album oscuro e intenso che ci colpisce già dalle prime note per un indurimento del sound dei nostri. "Finisterra" (il singolo apripista) attacca selvaggiamente con una ritmica parossistica di vago rimando ai Rotting Christ. La voce di Fernando ha abbandonato (quasi del tutto) l’attitudine recitativa per dar sfogo alla sua rabbia attraverso il cantato growl. "Memento Mori" non fa che confermare la direzione intrapresa dal quartetto: ritmica pesante, atmosfere goticheggianti ma è la parte centrale del brano ad entusiasmarmi quando Fernando utilizza la sua splendida e calda voce in versione pulita mentre le tastiere giocano un ruolo predominante negli arrangiamenti assai ben orchestrati. Sembra quasi di ascoltare una versione gotica degli ultimi lavori dei Dimmu Borgir, una sorta di symphonic gothic metal. Un breve arpeggio e poi è il momento di "Blood Tells", brano in cui la componente sinfonica si fa sempre più forte, ma è forse con la successiva "Upon the Blood of Men" che si tocca il punto più alto del disco: la violenta ritmica si fonde alla perfezione con le tenebrose tastiere e con la voce di Fernando, vero e indiscusso protagonista dell’album; un bellissimo assolo chiude poi il brano. I Moonspell sembrano qui essere tornati quelli di un tempo e ne ho le prove con "At the Image of Pain" e la successiva "Sanguine", i brani più vicini alle prime produzioni, in cui è sempre un ispirato Ribeiro a farla da padrone e in cui le chitarre si rincorrono in armonici giochi di chiaroscuri. 'Memorial' si confermava un ottimo album, al passo con i tempi. Oscuri, malinconici e potenti, grazie soprattutto alla cristallina produzione di Waldemar Sorychta, ormai quasi quinto membro stabile del clan lusitano, questi sono i Moonspell del 2006. Vi dicevo anche della limited edition, un lussuoso digipack con 10 pagine con serigrafia argentata e la bonus track "Atlantic", da avere nella vostra collezione. Coinvolgenti! (Francesco Scarci)

Very good compositions which is notorious for this band. It's not as though they're duplicating previous releases. They've been coming up with some FRESH riffs on the guitars. The vocals are about the same as they were on previous recordings. It fits well with the music. The songs are pretty tight in respect to how the riffs are catchy and brutal at the same time! I enjoyed this entire release. The leads are pretty well constructed in addition to the rhythms. I like how the tremolo picking on the guitars fit and made the songs even tighter. These guys have a lot to offer the death metal community!

I like how they were able to make the rhythm guitars flow with the voice. And the songs are very noteworthy. I liked everything about this release. The music, the vocals and the production quality. The only caveat was the duration of the album. It's only about 33 minutes.

I wouldn't be surprised if their music shows up on Ultimate-Guitar.com. The riffs are that good! And the vocals fit well, they seem to have everything going on here. The music is what I admired the most. Just all aspects of it.

As I said, the production quality was top notch making the music identifiable and clear. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals however, that's the reason for the "73" on this release. It's just an acquired taste for them. But the music was mostly moderate tempos with double bass kicking furiously. The riffs are very fresh and noteworthy (as previously mentioned) and that's what's so admirable about this release. They're not duplicating riffs in the past they made a new onslaught of songwriting this time around. This is one of their more solid releases and let's hope that they continue on this path of great making of their music! (Death8699)

Rakoth - Jabberworks

I russi Rakoth mi avevano letteralmente rapito con le loro atmosfere decadenti e tristi nel precedente 'Planeshift', edito anch’esso per l’italiana Code666. Questo 'Jabberworks' è il risultato di una lunga gestazione durata ben quattro anni, dal 1996 al 2000, quando è stato registrato avvalendosi peraltro dell’orchestra russa “Grotesque Orchestra”. La musica proposta qui è sempre black folk, che funge da punto d’incontro tra il passato e quello che sarà in effetti il futuro sound della band, dove le parti più lente, riflessive e folk sono più accentuate rispetto alle parti black. Sicuramente l’uso dell’orchestra ha impreziosito ancor di più quanto fatto dai russi, e come sempre, spunta uno strumento importantissimo, il flauto, che è di una tristezza infinita. Musica che riesce a coinvolgere emotivamente quella dei Rakoth, mai banale, malinconica e sognante. Ben registrata. In definitiva, un buon secondo capitolo della saga Rakoth, che lascia presagire ancora degli ottimi spunti per il futuro.

The music on here is what takes it away. And the vocals as well. Similar sound quality to this release. It's got a slight reverb/echo to it. It makes the album sound more grim and dark. I enjoyed this whole album so I got the CD of it. I figure the sound quality will be better than the digital music. Which it is! All the songs are killer. If I were to pick a few tracks, I'd say check out "Live and Burn", "Hymn to Dionysus" and "Die You Fucking Pig!" All of the songs are good though, mostly up-tempo with a few tracks that were somewhat slow, but still catchy as all hell. The music is what took it away on here (like I previously said).

The guitars are a mixture of tremolo picking with that echo that I talked about. But it seems as though some songs are fast, yet they take a break from that speed especially on "Tamam Shud." That one is a little slower than the rest.

They've done well in their discography, being consistent the whole way though their musical career. I felt that this one is a little stronger than their latest 'Never Surrender'. I like both releases just this one seems a little tighter.

The production quality was good just the tracks have that echo I talked about which makes the release darker and more fierce. All the songs are catchy and the leads were pretty strong as well! The rhythms are what did it for me and the vocals. I think that they do really well with their musical efforts. They are aggressive and underground just the way that they want to be (I presume). I'm not much for the lyrical concepts but the music just takes it all away for me. The guitars are furious and fast and they're catchy as all hell. These guys know how to make phenomenal black/thrash metal! (Death8699)

I'm glad that I've finally heard more of this band, 'Wildfire' is a gem in their discography! They know that their fans await every passing release!

Nocratai - Chaotic Prayer

Se il primo demo di questa one man band, 'Eternal Chill' del 1999, fu un vero e proprio bombardamento di black industriale all’ennesima potenza, questo secondo demo presenta varie differenze sin dall’iniziale “Satanicaholocaustica” che inizia con un sottofondo noise (che con campionamenti, effetti e modi diversi è presente per tutta la durata del demo) sovrastato da versi e sussurri diabolici seguiti poi da una semplice struttura ritmica dall’andamento marziale. È soltanto l’inizio del viaggio che vi offre sua maestà 4 (l’autore di tutte le liriche e delle musiche) per portarvi sempre più vicino alla fine. I vari versi, le urla e le growls di 4 vengono sempre effettate e filtrate e danno la voce appropriata a questa colonna sonora dell’apocalisse. “Our Hell Will Open” si apre con il suono di un allarme dal quale emerge un riff doomish black che esplode poi nel classico black industriale in stile Nocratai. La successiva “I Hear Only Calls From Hell” inizia con del dark ambient a cui subentra un ritmo techno intorno al quale orbitano suoni elettronici e voci campionate ed effettate per poi ripiombare nel brutale black industriale. “Purenoise666 No Life International” è uno dei brani che preferisco e inizia con dei samples (tratti da chissà quale film) sovrapposti ad una base musicale che si potrebbe adattare ad un film horror seguita da una bizzarra linea di violino campionata e ripetuta molte volte durante il pezzo; poi su sottofondo ambient/industrial si sentono dei versi diabolici (“…Satan take me!…”) e il pezzo prosegue nella follia sonora. Stupenda è “Klepoth” dove, su un inizio pseudo ambientale, compare in primo piano il miagolio di un gatto! Come vi sarà ormai chiaro, 'Chaotic Prayer' è tutt’altro che prevedibile. Il demo è una continua caotica commistione di suoni di matrice elettronica, black metal Industriale, noise e… deflagrante pazzia.
